There is something I've been thinking about for sometime, and that is a
Texas gathering of Fox Flyers. I know there are several, and think it
would be a fun thing to do. It could be said that I couldn't organize a
Duck Walk, but I could sure help! Anyone else interested that wants to
discuss this? Should we do it on the list or off? -Norm-

Don, adding pitch to your prop will generally increase your takeoff roll and
reduce your climb rate, but increase your cruise speed. If you need less
ground roll on takeoff you need to reduce pitch. The downside is that it
generally reduces your cruise speed too.

I am considering the 2200 for my Speedster. Did you put the Jabiru 2200 on a
Model IV? What cowl did you use and have you had any cooling issues?
Thank you
Jimmie

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Lowell Fitt" <lcfitt@inreach.com>
We had a great opportunity weather wise Saturday and took the opportunity to fly
as a group of five over Yosemite valley. and to Pine Mountain Lake for lunch.
Great viewing over the valley and took a bunch of video. Lots of snow confused
the camera a bit, but I think that part is fixable.
The performance part has to do with a Model IV that joined the group for the first
time. It is a Speedster with the long wings - 912 UL. The builder opted
to not shorten the wing span. He had none of the Speedster fairings except
the Speedster vertical stabilizer and rudder ribs and gap closure. In other words
no strut fairings, no wheel pants and no radiator shroud. He did have the
electric trim.
In short, his airplane is a real goer. The only conclusion I could make is that
the electric trim - not having to use flaperon trim for pitch control - is a
real advantage cruise wise. It may cost a little and take some build time. But
it will add a bunch to performance. I was surprised. Because of the bare
lift struts, I expected him to be the cruise speed determinant for the group (we
fly at the speed of the slowest airplane). Not so. He could easily make over
100 in cruise. I don't know his maximum cruise, but his engine was running
in the low fives as we flew.

Lowell, could you or others outline what is involved in
adding the pitch trim to a Model IV? I have a model IV
project that I picked up from another builder. It was not
equipped with any kind of pitch trim. Was this an option for
the IV? Or is this a custom deal? I'm interested, as I
have read of other builders experiences using flaperon for
pitch trim and would much prefer to have a more conventional
trim system.
Also, since we're on it, what are others thoughts regarding
short or long wings? Mine is not a speedster, but I plan on
adding fairings to it. I have the standard wings and have
heard opinions both ways. Some say go ahead and shorten the
wings, its easy to do. Others say the span makes no
difference in cruise speeds and makes the airplane
handle/fly better. What are your thoughts?

Hi Jimmie, I installed the Jabiru on an Avid Mark IV. I purchased a Jabiru
Nose bowl and grafted it onto a Mark IV cowl. this reduces frontal area
quite a bit. My cooling is perfect. My highest CHT is #1 and it generally
shows 290 in cruise. the other three cylinders are withen 20 degrees or so.
My oil temp is running a little low...I havn't seen 180 yet...but summer is
coming. I really love the Jabiru, it pulls very hard. Cruise is sweet. Not a
single leak or seapage anywhere on the engine.

Ted,
For starters I was going to suggest San Angelos, Mathis Field Not so much
because I live here. Its centrally located, there is plenty of parking, large
area for camping, ( off the flight line), or motels, (I could check on
transportation) and I know the assistant airport manager.
We might get a price on fuel also. I would do further checking if there
things people would like available. This is only my suggestion. I'm open to
others. How about it? Anyone else? Cheers, Norm.

Marc,
Sometimes when a line of text "wraps around" while you are typing, you may
not notice that you did not include a space between words. The words appear
separated because they are on different lines, but they really do lack a
space between the words. The viewers window will wrap the lines differently
than the one you wrote in, therefore there will be no space between the
words.
That is one reason, there may be others.
Don Pearsall.

Subject: | Skystar - My observations as of last week - was wing plan |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Phil Cowley" <pcowley@virtualrcflight.com>
Hey All,
Thought I'd jump in on this one. I picked up my series 5 project last
week, and on the way back (NY - CA) I stopped by skystar to ask some
questions, maybe get some support and parts, and get a prearranged demo
ride (the second time I've been there to try to get a ride) (I've never
flown in a kitfox to date, or seen a completed series 5).
When I got there, I waited about 20 minutes to see Ed, and the Crystal
(the secretary) was very busy, but did make time to talk to us.
After waiting, we got a brief tour of their showroom / assembly hanger
(though walked past the manufacturing portion of the facility without
comment)
After having to press Ed to answer particular questions about my
particular aircraft (series 5 taildragger) and getting more or less non
answers I gave up and inquired about the demo flight. I was informed
that the Turbo 7 demo (the red and white one featured everywhere) was
gone with an unnamed "Ex - Employee" who owns the aircraft and "just
came in and took it this morning, dunno where", and the R&D / Demo 7 was
apart "just being checked out for the airshow coming up" (S'NF) All the
demo 4's were gone as well. Very similar story to the one I got the
first time.
During the "experience" I got a feeling of indifference and was stunned
by the lack of interest in my project, and a total lack of a feeling of
support. I run a small business and would never consider treating
customers in such a manner.
Ed made a comment about having problems selling aircraft in today's
economy and the company going through a transitional phase and walked
away.... maybe I just got him on another bad day.
Dave Morris was absent that day, and I was warned by Crystal that "he
had been having problems lately with support and just to email her with
questions". Her effort and caring impressed me and I'm glad she's there.
CrystalR@skystar.com
To be brutally honest, I'm not really sure how they are still in
business. If I was a customer looking at a kit after that (the second
time around, similar story before) I would definitely never purchase a
kit.
After having driven several hours out of my way to visit them (for the
second time), I am still glad I did it, but am left disappointed by
their (Ed's) attitude and lack of support. I can't express how valuable
this list is to myself and the kitfox community in the face of these
challenges.
If anyone in California or even close is interested in showing off their
KF project/aircraft I'd be very interested in taking a look (and would
love to go for a ride if it's in the cards).
If anyone out there is interested in seeing my 5, they are more than
welcome - its currently located just a few minutes from the San Luis
Obispo airport, SBP. If you fly in I'd be happy to pick you up and go
for lunch. I have pictures of the trip and project if anyone is
interested, and hope to get a website going soon for the plane.
Really short summary of the trip - there are a lot of barns & fields
between Long island and San luis obispo, lots of nice people in this
country, tons of neat places I vow to see by air one day, and tons of
towns and communities that I would like to go back and visit for a few
weeks each. What a wonderful country we live in. I'm really impressed
with the quality of work done on my aircraft and can't wait to check
everything and start up where the previous owner left off.
Please understand that these are just my experiences, and should be
taken as such, let's hear what other people's experiences were. Maybe it
was just I got them on two bad days .... I hope for our sake
Warm Regards & happy flying,
Phil Cowley

Mark,
The trim was part of the Speedster design and was an option for all of the
Model IVs sold during the Speedster era. The stabilizer is still available
from Skystar - $595. http://www.skystar.com/upgrades.htm
When I ordered, I didn't purchase the whole kit for the trim tab to save a
dollar or two and was surprised when I saw the 1" channel welded as the
hinge attach point on the tab cut-out. Te Servo - available from The Ray
Allen company - http://www.rayallencompany.com - $225 - is about an inch
thick also. This made it pretty clear that I would need to add ribs to the
elevator to give the thickness for the fabric to clear both the servo and
the tab hinge attachment. With weight in mind, I used 1/4" Urethane foam
for the ribs encasing them in a very light weight fiberglass on both sides.
I decided to also close the gap and did the vertical fin and rudder also.
The SS supplied ribs were of plywood.
I also modified the access cover as I didn't like the way SS put the cover
on top of the elevator. I put it on the bottom which took a little effort
as even though the servo was installed before covering, I wanted to be able
to remove it after cover if servicing became necessary. I helped a friend
do his that way and have a couple of photos of a modification to the servo
that makes removal a lot easier - than on my installation. I you would like
to see them let me know and I will send them direct.
The modification to electric servo elevator trim will take a couple of bucks
and some time, but I think if you did it you would be happy you did. And if
you fly like me with guys with the flaperon trim, it will pay for itself
with fuel cost savings

Phil,
Wish I would have know you were coming by Idaho. We would have gladly
gone
flying. Careful what you wish for.. there is a Kitfox fly-in June 12th at
Cameron Park.. NE of Sacramento. There are several that will be flying up
and most likely near you. If you can make it up you would get a chance to
chat with a lot of people.
If you find your way back up to Idaho.. give me a shout.

Subject: | Skystar - My observations as of last week - was wing |
plan
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Don Pearsall" <donpearsall@comcast.net>
Hi Phil, I am sorry about your bad experience at Skystar. Their lack of
enthusiasm about having you there may have been because you were not
actually there to write a check. After all, the plane you had was already
paid for. I sure hope they don't treat prospective sales like they did you,
either.
Anyway, you can depend on this list to give you very good quality support
for your project. Just ask, and you will have answers.
