Good points Bob, but the way I see it they were paid for the airplane and it
shouldn't make any difference whether they support the 1st owner or 10th.
It baffles me why it would cost any more to support it regardless who owns
it. The support should follow the kit (in my opinion) because it's in their
best interest for the airplane to be completed and flying.
I've always supported SS and built two of their kits. Fortunately I
finished mine before things started the steep decline so it really hasn't
had a big effect on me, other than perhaps the resale value of my airplane.
Hopefully, whatever it is that's behind this problem will be recognized and
fixed. The Kitfox family is fairly unique and needs to thrive, not die.

This is exactly how it is at Rans Aircraft. Prior to purchasing my already
built Model IV, I considered buying a partially built Rans S6S. I knew I
would need factory support, and did not want to commit until I knew it would
be there for me. I contacted Randy Schlitter who assured me that they
didn't care if I was the first or the tenth owner, the support would be the
same. At Rans, one person, Ed Schwabb, provides all such assistance, and
although I've not personally had any dealings with him, I understand his
service is excellent. It obviously doesn't require a large, expensive
staff. I'll bet if you talk to anyone who's built a Rans in the last few
years they'll have nothing but praise for Ed. It's really too bad that the
folks in this group who should be in a position to say the same good things
about Skystar are unable to do so. Unfortunate, too, that apparently the
folks at Skystar don't understand the importance of good customer relations.
They should at least give the impression that they're trying to help even if
they're unable to do so. A genuine concern for a company's patrons can't
do anything but help the bottom line.

Skystar gave me excellent customer service.
I purchased a used KFII earlier this year and called Skystar numerous times
and they were very helpful. They updated their records to show me as the new
owner, and answered my various questions that I had ranging from topics on
the fiberglass wing tanks, rudder pedals, rigging etc.
Skystar also mailed me a tap and die set free of charge so that I could
drill a new hole in my new engine I purchased from a Rotax dealer in CA.
They also mailed me a list of things to check when doing my annual
inspection. A few weeks ago I placed an order with Skystar and I received my
order in California within a week.

In my opinion Skystar had two excellent employees that cared about there
customers, John and Crystal. John is no longer there and lets hope that
Crystal doesn't leave because if she does, I don't know of anybody else

completed series 5). When I got there, I waited about 20 minutes to see Ed,
and the Crystal (the secretary) was very busy, but did make time to talk to
us. After waiting, we got a br
ief tour of their showroom / assembly hanger (though walked past the
manufacturing portion of the facility without comment) After having to press
Ed to answer particular questions about my particular aircraft (series 5
taildragger) and getting more or less non answers I gave up and inquired
about the demo flight. I was informed that the Turbo 7 demo (the red and
white one featured everywhere) was gone with an unnamed "Ex - Employee" who
owns the aircraft and "just came in and took it this morning, dunno where",
and the RD / Demo 7 was apart "just being checked out for the airshow coming
up" (S'NF) All the demo 4's were gone as well. Very similar story to the one
I got the first time. During the "experience" I got a feeling of
indifference and was stunned by the lack of interest in my project, and a
total lack of a feeling of support. I run a small business and would never
consider treating customers in such a manner. Ed made a comment about having
problems selling aircr
aft in today's economy and the company going through a transitional phase
and walked away.... maybe I just got him on another bad day. Dave Morris was
absent that day, and I was warned by Crystal that "he had been having
problems lately with support and just to email her with questions". Her
effort and caring impressed me and I'm glad she's there.
CrystalR@skystar.com To be brutally honest, I'm not really sure how they are
still in business. If I was a customer looking at a kit after that (the
second time around, similar story before) I would definitely never purchase
a kit. After having driven several hours out of my way to visit them (for
the second time), I am still glad I did it, but am left disappointed by
their (Ed's) attitude and lack of support. I can't express how valuable this
list is to myself and the kitfox community in the face of these challenges.
If anyone in California or even close is interested in showing off their KF
project/aircraft I'd be very interested
in taking a look (and would love to go for a ride if it's in the cards).
If anyone out there is interested in seeing my 5, they are more than welcome
- its currently located just a few minutes from the San Luis Obispo airport,
SBP. If you fly in I'd be happy to pick you up and go for lunch. I have
pictures of the trip and project if anyone is interested, and hope to get a
website going soon for the plane. Really short summary of the trip - there
are a lot of barns fields between Long island and San luis obispo, lots of
nice people in this country, tons of neat places I vow to see by air one
day, and tons of towns and communities that I would like to go back and
visit for a few weeks each. What a wonderful country we live in. I'm really
impressed with the quality of work done on my aircraft and can't wait to
check everything and start up where the previous owner left off. Please
understand that these are just my experiences, and should be taken as such,

taxi test and finish tail dragger flight training. So doubt if I will be

Thanks for the vote of conficence Rick,
My scoop is a rough design because, as you know, it
has to adjust to fit what eventually works. The
intake design should be OK now, but I'll have to work
on the exhaust side. Initially I am using the 1:3:2
formula for size. That is, the intake is 1/3 of the
radiator size and the exhaust is 2/3rds the size. But
that exhaust has to vary in size to allow for temp
changes. How much? I don't yet know. When it is
done, maybe then it could work as a model. It also
controlls the cowl and oil cooler airflow, so I have
to adjust for that too.
What have you used as your scoop dimensions?

I have been searching real estate around the Corpus Christi area which
is where I used to live, (twice).
The cold, cold long, long winters of Nome are just getting to be too
much for me and the missus.
It is no fun having the "Arctic Fox" shut up in the hangar from November
thru April either. (Not much sun, plus cold)
Point is, I plan on bringing my KF5 down as soon as I can locate a
decent place and plan on becoming (dare I say it? a Winter Texan)
Oh, that really hurt me to say.
I'm going to my long time friends daughter's HS graduation in C.C. this
May and plan on flying them to Lubbock to get their daughter settled in
to Texas Tech. (In a rental plane)
If you guys want to organize a get together, count me in. I hope to have
the "Arctic Fox" down there by this winter if not sooner.

Oh, absolutely Randy and Sid! (Sid wrote to me privately with about the same
comment. I answer both here).
I do hope that there will always be a market for "tube 'n rags," wood and
aluminium planes. I must be quite an experience to stand in front of say, a
pile of aluminium sheets and see one day a plane flying out of it. But just as
Cessna saw a market in the 50s for a tricycle plane that could be used nearly
as a car, I think we will soon see a new generation of light sport airplanes in
composite monocoque construction.

I totally agree. I love my taildragger model 3, it's so much fun. Furthermore,
a tailwheel is less weight and less drag. How about a composite monocoque high
wing taildragger? Do you think there is a market for that? Maybe SkyStar should
look at it.

My experience with Skystar has generally been very positive- both technical and
parts-since I purchased my S-6 in 2001 Of course we all sorely miss John McBean.
I think we need to consider what we may be costing ourselves if we continue to
dis Skystar excessively. Constructive criticism can be useful, ganging up on
the company can lead to a devaluation of our planes and projects. IMHO

Torgeir your welcome, I hope everyone interested can get some benefit out
of the information I have posted.
The pictures don't show the safety wire I added to my setup for pre
testing,and the ties are high temp solar resistant. I have change out the
ties with bolts and installed a metal strap today per your recommendations.
Yes I made the needed modifications to the Bing 54, If you are lucky
enough to have the new style that is pre drilled and taped the project is a
bit easier. But it is doable if you have the older style Bing 54 with the
flat boss on the side. The link below will show how the Bing 54 can be
drilled and taped to accept the fitting required for the vacuum side of the
control.

Just returned from a two week work in Sweden.
I've seen the pictures on the Sport flight site, great info in your
pictures.
Did you modify the carb, by drilling out the connection for carburettor
(low) pressure?
From the picture, you're using black strap, why not using screw's, nut
and locktite? The black straps cant stand much of a high temperature,
but there is a "purple" kind of straps - for high temp use.
Thanks for great info about HAC system (high altitude compensation) -
should be standard on any two stroke Rotax.

My scoop is a rough design because, as you know, it
has to adjust to fit what eventually works. The
intake design should be OK now, but I'll have to work
on the exhaust side. Initially I am using the 1:3:2
formula for size. That is, the intake is 1/3 of the
radiator size and the exhaust is 2/3rds the size. But
that exhaust has to vary in size to allow for temp
changes. How much? I don't yet know. When it is
done, maybe then it could work as a model. It also
controlls the cowl and oil cooler airflow, so I have
to adjust for that too.
What have you used as your scoop dimensions?

Ok, I have to agree, let's not gang up on our supplier.
A year ago last Thanksgiving, I made a rather long, expensive trip from
Nome down to Caldwell.
Even though it was the Thanksgiving holiday, Ed Downs met me and my
family at the factory to answer my questions,
give us ALL a personal guided tour of the facilities and then the treat,
a demo flight in the S7. He even let me fly it
and I was only a student pilot at that time. Ed and the KitFox convinced
me that I had found MY airplane.
Granted, I was looking to buy a kit and build it. However, my busy
schedule would not allow me to invest 2000 or so hrs. so I opted to
find/purchase a built KF.
I made what for me was the correct decision. Ed was disappointed at
losing a kit sale but I assured him that I would be looking to him and
SkyStar for parts and tech support. SkyStar registered me as the new
owner after I made my purchase and they have been good to me providing
what they promised.
I really don't think that the problems some of you are experiencing are
intentional. Having met Ed, I doubt that he is anything less than a
smart businessman. You have to give these guys credit as they are taking
the lead in the upcoming Sport plane market even though that ruling has
yet to be.
I know many of you have been or are in business. We all know how
difficult & expensive it is to operate. I can't speak for Ed or his
staff, but I think they know what they need to do in order to stay in
business. Let's give them a break while they try to get this all sorted
out.
I think our loyalty and patience will pay off in the long run. I don't
think we will be left hanging out to dry. Those of you who are waiting
for parts etc, don't jump the gun. If your orders are not filled I'm
sure there is good reason for the delays. The taste will be bad
poo-pooing the hand that "feeds" us.
That's my story... and I'm stickin' to it!

The cowling is a modified KF round cowl. As soon as I figure out how to do
itI will put pics on the computer of my plane.
I am not flyin now. My rpm for take-off has been around 3000.
I backed it off for cruise to around 2500. That gave me 100 mph.
indicated. Any faster seems alot for a KF. A little uncomfortable
for me. Have had it to 130 in smooth air.
I had cooling problems at first but was trying to not use the tunnels
provided by Jabiru. Bad move. You cannot cool these engines like
a Lycoming or Continental. You have to do it like Jabiru does
it on their airplane. Fuel burn is close to 5-1/2 GPH. Will
expect better with more adjusting on the throttle body.
Performance is what I am more interested in. I like to fly down
on a river and be able to climb back up over the hill anytime
and anywhere. I really like this engine.No gearbox; no radiator;
compact design and minimal weight. Hope this helps you.

I have to tell you a little story. I have been reading the mail about Skystar and
their service etc. Here is my story.
I had to annual (condition inspection) my plane and was starting it Sunday. I
found broken brackets on my oil cooler. 950 hours on plane. It was possible to
cut the bad tabs and reweld but I thought I could call Skystar and order 2 new
ones this was Monday morning. Guess what,they didn't have any in stock. Dave
asked me if I needed them powder coated and I said no and got a good discount.
He said that he would have them made up and shipped ground. I said ok, called
back today, Wednesday and he said that they were finished the day that I called
and were already shipped and gave me a shipping number. I called and it looked
like they would be here Saturday and thought that was great. I went to the
store a little while ago and when I got back, guess what was sitting on my porch.
New brackets for my oil cooler. I have always had good luck with Skystar,
lets
not be too harsh on their service.

I truly am sorry that you've had such a bad time of it. Yes, I agree that the
President is ultimately responsible
for the performance or lack thereof of his company.
Let's hope that Ed and his staff are monitoring the list.
I certainly would hope that these negative comments serve as a wake up to SS.
I don't think SS (or any company) can stand losing their customer base.
As I said, I think I made the right decision to buy a KF already built.

I agree completely with Bruce, you have to build one to really
get the full experience. Flying it's one thing, but when you
spend THOUSANDS of dollars, and you get left hanging, you're
not going to feel so enthusiastic. I spent > $60K on my Fox
and I built it myself, including hanging the wings all by myself
so I think I'm qualified to comment.
This subject IS "On Topic" by the way, because NOT getting the
stuff you ordered, is just as detrimental to building, as not
knowing how to do something. I think it's fair game, and the
delete key is certainly available if you don't like it. I
delete list related emails all day, myself without reading
them simply because I have no interest.

I am doing my annual inspection and found the new service bulletin about the carb
flange. I checked it and low and behold it was ripped halfway through. I never
noticed any high temps or rpm problems on the last few flights. I have the
carbs supported with the extra springs , and I also have the 5 1/2" offset K+N
filters.
The filter on that side had hit the motor mount a few times due to had starts or
stops.
Does anyone know where I can get the smaller 2"x 3" carb filters?? I cannot find
a listing for them anywhere, but have seen them on other Kitfoxs before.

Both Ed Downs (Skystar President) and Dave Morris (Support & Parts Manager)
are subscribed to this list, and (hopefully) get and read all the messages.
Although Ed and Dave rarely post, we still get the benefit of ex-Skystar
employee and Kitfox builder John McBean. John does a great job supporting
the Kitfox products even though he does not get paid to do it anymore.
And that just brings to light the fact that each and everyone of you who
takes the time to answer questions posted here is part of the Skystar
support system. It is my opinion that if you and the list were not here, the
cost to Skystar to maintain the same level of support would cost many, many
thousands of dollars.
In order to keep Skystar a viable business, you must support them with your
dollars too. If you have a choice of buying supplies or parts from Aircraft
Spruce, Wicks, or Ace Hardware, you should buy from Skystar, even if it
means paying that extra dollar or two. I can imagine that Ed Downs and Frank
Miller are holding their breath waiting for Sport Pilot to be approved. That
will open a whole new market for the company, and they will gain back all
the ground they lost in the last 3-4 years.

with the vibrations and the engine mounts cracking with the 912S. I understand
that the slipping clutch is apparently resolving this problem but would

flown with the slipping clutch installed without any problems. I will be giving

I hope you all don't mind, but I too would like to relate some
feelings toward Skystar. I received my kit in june of 95,
it took 5 1/2 years to build. With 4 children and a job in which I
travel alot and work 60 to 90 hours a week I was lucky
to finish it that soon. Many thanks to my wife for all her help. We
did put about 2500 hours into it. I have been flying now for
over 3 years, so I have dealt with Skystar for over 8 1/2 years. I
guess what I'm saying is that I've got some history with them.
During that time of building I called so much they knew my voice.
They had to replace several large parts in my kit and never
questioned me as to whether or not it was needed. During the past 3
years they have come to my rescue many times. (Thanks John)
About 6 weeks ago while doing my annual I found a crack in my
exhaust. I called Dave and he said to send it in. I figured it
would be weeks before I saw it. He received it thursday afternoon,
called me on friday and said it was ready to go. I got it
monday morning. I have had many good experiences with them. Another
happy camper.

store a little while ago and when I got back, guess what was sitting on my
porch. New brackets for my oil cooler. I have always had good luck with Skystar,

I am the second owner of a Model IV kit. I called Skystar today and talked
to Dave Morris. Even though I was not spending any money he answered
several of my questions and researched one question that he was not sure of
and called me back later today with the answer.
Overall, my experience with ordering parts from Skystar has been good. When
Dave Morris is not available I always call Crystal. She is just super.
