After flying with the cowl both off and on, I found a distinct difference between the two. Aerodynamically there was a significant increase (10-12mph) in ias which was very nice, but the biggest improvement was in engine cooling. One thing you have to understand is that the air mass will treat the radiator as an obstacle and rather than go through it, most of the air will deviate around it resulting in poor heat to air transfer. By fabricating a scoop that forces the air through the radiator under pressure increases efficiency dramatically. My scoop has a small opening in front and a large rear opening ( 1/3-2/3). It was a lot of work building the scoop, but worth the effort because the result was what I was looking for. Below are some shots of it on Sportflight. I've got a better camera now and will try to put something up that shows the mechanism a little better for the cowl flap. You crank case is vented through both valve covers. The line to the pan is a return for any, most mist. The line to the pan is not the vent. I will check but I think I put a post of my setup somewhat borrowed from Tom. I moved the returns to the side but that really didn't solve the problem of the return oil. I am back to the rear return. My new pan is custom built .090 and holds an extra quart, not that makes a difference on the breather return.
