I really like my Garmin 295, lots of bells and whistles, but not color. the panel
page and vertical navigation options are useful.
I also use the road mode occasionally to identify the best route for a road trip.

Good point about the road use of the 295. One reason I'm going with the 296
is because it accepts a marine database with marine charts.

I fly with my finger on a sectional and the GPS turned off these days,
to break all the bad habits I developed from using too many devices
(multiple gps's, etc.). It makes flying a lot more fun too!

my plan right now is to panel mount the 295 next to the dynon efis for my RV9.
but past experience tells me that the 296 will probably replace it.

Hey guys, I just had to share this with you fellows.
Everything "airplane" so far for me has been so damn expensive that when
I hauled the "Arctic Fox" into the hangar for her annual Friday last, I
almost went out and bought myself a box of Tampons for what I knew would
be a "painful" experience. :-)
Much to my surprise, I got a real knowledgeable A&P (older fellow with
mostly Alaska experience) to agree to help me out.
One week and ONLY $250 later I had my annual completed. Granted, I did
the lion's share of the work myself, but good ol' Vic only charged me
$100 ($50 p/hr.) for his time and he fell in love with the KitFox. Boy
Howdy, you know I tipped him an extra $50 and now I've got a new friend
and A&P!
Took her up for a couple of hours Saturday (blue skies and about 24 F)
did some stalls, slow flight ect. and did my three to a full stop.
I'm current again!
Even greased that last one, three point. So I'm feeling a little virile
these days. Oh course, the weather has turned to crap and it snowed
three inches yesterday, but spring is just around the corner and I and
the "Arctic Fox" are ready for action.

Oh Sid, you "lucky" guy.
Shishmaref is located on the northwest shore of the Seward Peninsula about 85
miles NE of Wales and 225 miles N of Nome.
(N 66-14.97' W 166-05.37') It lies along a sandy barrier and is a "real
vacation spot".
There are about 85 Inuit Eskimos living in the village there. ( it is a "dry"
village so no booze)
The airport is gravel 5000' x 70' with runway 5/23 running parallel to the
shore. Keep your eyes out for locals riding 4-wheelers on the R/W.
Practice up on your slips as the prevailing winds are from the west and most
landings will be with a strong X-wind.
The good news is that you will (probably) be coming to Nome which is the area
Hub and yes we have hotels and bars.
Let me know when you are in the area. I'm good friends with the OME airport
manager, Jerry Oliver.
Welcome (in advance) to the frozen north. Oh yeah, it snowed again last night
and it's about 21F right now.

That's Arctic Fox :-)
I "replaced" the oil filter (K&N HP #1003) and the oil (3.75 qts. Valvoline VR-1
racing 20w-50)
New spark plugs are Bosch multi-electrode platinum, similar to "real" aviation
plugs. New fuel filter.
I also replaced the vacuum filter but the one in there was pretty clean
My ELT batteries are dated '06 so I'll replace them next annual, tested good.
I also added some rub guards at the rudder cables (both sides of the rudder where
you could see some minor contact)
I added an additional belly drain hole w/ shroud at Vic's suggestion.
Other than that, it was just clean, lube, adjust and inspect everything.
Painted my warp drive prop tips white on both sides after my son almost walked
into the thing last summer.
(the prop continues to spin after the engine is cut) I don't allow anybody to open
the door now until all is still and I complete my checklist.
Vic thinks the Fox is a real sweetheart and I'm going to let him take her up when
the weather improves. (Snowed again last night)
All in all, I couldn't be more pleased!

Hello:
I have a Kitfox Classic IV with a Rotax 912. I have noticed that when I shut the
engine down, then come back a few minutes later to start it again it is flooded.
I have to shut the fuel off, start the engine with full throttle, then
when it starts, I turn the fuel back on. Has anyone else had this problem? If
so, what did you do about it?

Well I used to take off, and hit "direct" in the GPS, the takeoff and
follow the line. But then one day I decided to try without, and found
that simple pilotage deteriorates if you don't practice. So now I look
at the chart, figure out I need to fly heading 290 for a while, line up
my dg and go. Meantime tracking all those little towns, and roads, etc.
on the sectional. For me it all goes back to what makes flying fun.
I do have a Garmin GNC-250XL in the Panel, and a handheld Garmin along
for backup in case my sectional ever fails!

I don't know Rotax's, but if they're carburated, sounds like classic
symptoms of a leaking float needle.

On my first cross country, the GPS failed, (actually the batteries did), but because
I was flying by pilotage anyway, it was of little concern. I did, however
also lose the altimeter reading with the GPS, but that, too was of little concern
in an ultralight. I fully agree with Michel!!! GPS is fun, but pilotage
is even more fun.

My handheld gps failed 15 minutes after departure for Oshkosh 3 years ago. I
had a non pilot passenger on board (Piper Archer) and taught her to navigate
while we flew along. Didn't take her 30 minutes to grasp ded reckoning,
pilotage and VOR navigating. I didn't have to raise a finger to navigate the
rest of the trip to or from Oshkosh. That was actually quite enjoyable
watching someone learn to do this. Of course I already had the course line
drawn on the chart so that made it easy. This really made the trip enjoyable
for the passenger also as it made her feel that she had an important role in
the flight.

Thanks for the memories. I checked out Circle Hot Springs, Bettles,
Chena Hot Springs, Fairbanks and Anaktuvuk Pass Airports on the web site
