When the Amphibious Floats get installed is there a requirement to notify the FAA?
If yes, before, after, and what is the process?
My Fox had 50 hrs on wheels when I took possession of it.

Dwight, I stretch the bungee by hand and then take the vise grip and clamp the
stretched portion of the bungee to the airframe. I run the bungee to the next
half wrap and stretch again then firmly clamp it in place and so on. And yes you
can do it alone at least it worked well for me.

Barry, Yes you must notify the Feds if you are installing floats on your
Kitfox for the first time. They will put the airplane back into what they
call Phase 1, and will assign you test flight parameters for this new
configuration(how many hours to be flown off, test flight area etc.) I just
went through this when I installed skis on my Series 5 last winter. Bruce

One of my 2 inch dacron strips used for covering over ribs has begun to separate

a way to fix this kind of problem (I've tried the Polyfiber cement, with messy
results)?

I don't have experience with this myself, but I've heard of some who have had to
replace thier Dacron skins as early as 7 or 8 years if highly weahtered. Are
you thinking about a temporary fix or a complete recovering?

Howard, just a note. When I installed my one piece LP windshield it was very
hot out, good thing. However. The bend next to root was a bear. I ended up
cutting quite a bit away. I am also almost done with some fiberglass covers
to take the place of the flat aluminum one. What a job. If you like I will
look for some pic of my install.

Hi,
What I would try, is MEK to remove paint, silver and brush so that you have clean
fabric showing. Then work poly tak into the fabric so you can get as much
on the rib surface as you can. Then if this works repaint the area! don't know
if it will work, just a thought.

It is a major mod to your aircraft, and I think they would require some type of
test hours for safe operation!

Just "float " that tape back down with clear polyrush. cut it with MEK.
About 50/50. Remember, all the Poly coatings are compatable (Unless your
color coats is Aerothane, is the paint real glossy?) so you don't have to
worry about removing anything first. Clean the area well with soap and
water. Let it dry good. then with a 2" brush heavy with material float it on
over the bad spot. Feather it out lightly and use a rag with MEK to remove
any ridges at the edges of the burshed area. This will flatten out after it
drys...about 5 minutes. If the tape doesnt want to lay down flat, take a
225 degree cloths iron (calirate it with a candy thermomiter) DO NOT USE A
HEAT GUN!!!!!! Smooth the area down gently with a cloths iron. The fresh
Polybrush will re-activate the older material under heat. Make sure you use
some teflon sheet under the iron or you'll end up with Poly Tone on the
bottom of your iron.

Is

John
John,
I'm just about to start that same repair myself (PolyTone Paint). My
problem and maybe yours is bigger than just a loose tape. My paint is a med to
dark gray and the heat from the sun caused the upper tapes to "ever so
slightly" shrink and pull away from their original position. It is so slight that
you
cannot see the shrinkage with the naked eye. However, if you pull a bottom
inspection plate and look up through the wing, you can see daylight along each
pinked edge of all the upper 2" tapes....HENCE,,,the UV's of the sun are
always on that Pinked edge and will eventually deteriorate the fabric along that
thin line. This, is bordering on a safety issue. BTW, my tapes are now
starting to come loose at the pinked edges (badly).
I worked with Poly Fiber on this issue and they even sent me a high
dollar temp reading machine to monitor the fabric temps along with the inside wing
temps. They said that no way would the sun cause the tapes to shrink. I
proved them wrong by reading fabric temps inside the wing to near 225 degrees.
225 degrees will shrink those tapes the small amount I mentioned. They sent me
all the necessary materials to do the fix and promised to get back with a final
report. They never did. Liability, you know.....
Question: what color is your plane? If it's a dark color, you may have
the same cancer that I do. If not, yours may be an isolated case.
For the fix, I would be hesitant to use MEK on the roof. One drop on the
paint and you mess it up. Someone on the list said that the tapes will peel
off rather easily without any chemicals or heat. That is what I'm going to
try. I will cut each tape just aft (2") of the lead edge tape. Peel the tape
back and cut just fwd of the flapperon hinge (2"). Put in a new tape
(pre-shrunk) under the 2" section at the leading edge and over the 2" section near
the
hinge. Mask the area for putting on the new tapes with Poly Brush. Mask
again for the Poly Spray. Then mask again for a new top coat of Bright Silver
along each 2" tape. Of course, there will be some sanding and ironing between
the masking job.

The affected tape is, I believe, something like Bahama Silver. Anyway, it's light
gray. The wing has been getting some sun this past year (it's in an open

John,
Can you push the plane out into the sun and pull a bottom inspection
cover? Look up inside and see if sunlight is leaking through at the pinked edges
around the 2" tapes. If so, they have shrunk and your problem might be bigger
than one loose tape. Worth looking at however, with your light color it's
probably just a fluke that one tape came loose.

Modifications to experimental aircraft require a change in flight
limitations. Here a simple letter to your FSDO requesting it and FAA will
assign a "fly off time" like the first 40 hours. It's 5hrs here for such
things as a prop change, but could be different for your area. Bob U.
