how do they ship bananas so they are ripe when you buy them and 2 days
later they are gone bad, must be a complicated process

that's easy, Charlie. You pump air through a long special filter that removes
nearly all of the oxygen and you fill your container with what's left, namely
nitrogen. Perishable goods won't perish without oxygen. That's how they are
transported worldwide. Next time you eat a banana you'll know where the
nitrogen taste comes from! :-)

Yes but is it a side slip, Randy? To me it looks like the pilot is correcting
from a NW'ly wind (look at the vessels at anchor and the windsock) and crabs to
take up the eastward drift, then straighten up at the last moment to align with
the runway. That last left turn dips his left wing and the left gears are first
to touch the ground. In my understanding, a side slip would have kept him
aligned with the runway all the time.
I have never been to Hong Kong or landed on the now closed Kai Tak airport. ...

Michel,
I would call this a forward slip. - just to lose altitude fast. I was a
passenger in big passenger plane once and really liked the landing. Just
clearing one ridge and then peaks on each side and then ending up at sea
level. But I don't remember a slip! I am sorry to hear it is closed.

This is what I learned long ago too. If you have to
go down in a forest, aim right between the tops of two
pines close together maybe 5' down. Pines are nice
enough to bend under the impact and cushin the stop.
Your wings will do the same. If you are a good aim, a
third pine just past the first 2 will catch your
fuselage and stop you safely, so the theory goes.
Bring a rope.
I suppose the same is useful in rough terrain. Trees
are softer than big rocks.
If you are real cool, you'd be planning your next
building project just before impact.... :-) As we can
see, our KF's have a habbit of almost always allowing
us to walk away and say, "Darn, now I gotta' build
another one."

Hello List
I am writing from Northern central Canada where we are still covered in snow
and our temperature are still below freezing. And yes our milk is expensive
too, around $14.00 CAN per gal. And like Scot says it is very expensive to
live up North. We are trying to build a home and to make a pad for our house
it is going to cost us around 10K also, and that is not using nice gravel
either. We too do get some relief in the high costs in the form of an
settlement allowance. The amount depends on the community in which a person
lives in. It can vary from $ 6000 to $ 23000. We are fortunate to live in
Cambridge Bay as we have jet airline service from two carriers, most
northern communities do not have this luxury. It still costs us @ $ 1400.00
return to fly to a southern destination. But with all these negatives it is
still one of the best places to live if you like wide open spaces and the
freedom to go where you please, when you please (weather permitting) and if
you like to see wildlife and nature in its natural state it can't be beat.
And this is why I have chosen to live in the Arctic.
But as an aside I sure enjoy going south once in awhile to enjoy all that it
offers, warmth, trees, its own beautiful areas and so many places to spend
my money. I thought I would just pass this on from a Northern point of view.

And you are most probably right, Randy. I forgot that one.

I think the people of Hong Kong are very pleased with their new airport,
situated on another island, away from the center of the city. I understand that
Kay Tak was famous for its difficult northerly approach. In fact, I believe it
was the only place in the world where the ILS was divided in two, turning at
nearly 90 degrees around a radio and visual mark called the checker because of
its painted appearance. All this is, of course, from hanging out in
aviation-related internet places, because I've never been there.
Although, the company I worked for previously, Norcontrol, provided the
Approach, Tower and Ground radar system for the new airport. But I never one of
the lucky guys who travelled onsite.
Cheers,
Michel
