I had just finished painting my project and was assembling the final fit. My wife and I were moving one of the speedwings (short, but built stoutly) and the new finish was sort of slippery. Well, we dropped the tip on the concrete floor from about two feet in the air and bent one of the spar extensions inside the fiberglass tip assembly.. ...man, oh man, how can you do a 'ground loop' inside your garage? I did. Now, my perfect project has one repair and its not even had the engine started yet! If that won't make ya feel better about flying and using yours and making a little, teeny mistake (maybe a bump or crack in the strip?), then nothing will cure your guilt complex. Not that you have one, but I know how you feel about 'bruising' the beast.......its just a machine and now you get some repair and replace experience. See, now you're the well rounded homebuilder and flyer. Since moving to Chicago from Colorado, I've added Life Preservers to my items of neccesity list. Getting around Chicago safely you need to do some over water time. Landing on shore in many areas is simply out of the question. Just keeping up with big city traffic......... Then I put some Ski Saver tape on the same spot and did the same thing several days later. Both had a little fold over on the leading edge corner as a test of adhesion for my flapping test. Both pealed off. Now, no one is going to have a folded over corner on their leading edge of their use in gap sealing, and most will be checking this as a preflight item of the airfoils.........so, at this point I am of the opinion that the new stuff I got for free and as a demo is just as good as the Ski Saver type. So I am proceeding to use on my aircraft and sending it on to the next on the list. It already has been tried by two of us..........I believe Scott in Nome was the next in line. Hang on everybody. I live in Alberta, just west of Edmonton. I'm looking for a builder who might have some extra metal kicking around. I realize there are many different sizes of angles, sheeting that we need. I can access the most common, but there are some that can only be ordered by the 4x12 sheet. Most of the sheet is never needed and there seems to be much left over. I would be willing to pay fair price plus shipping. I just think this would be a lettle more less expensive then buying a whole sheet or a long length of angle only to use a small piece of it. It would probably only be worthwhile getting this from a canadian as shipping cross the border can get expensive. Any thoughts from the group are welcome. The things about the Airdale that are different are mainly concerning the floor of the plane. Avid-Kitfox attach the landing gear to the bottom of the fuselage. Under certain load conditions,. the gear can twist out of the holding clamps and ruin the lower longerons. The Airdale (Pursang) is engineered so the fuselage is stronger than the gear so you can bend the gear and not hurt the airframe. This has been tested the hard way. The Airdale has two piece gear that plug into the fuselage ala Cessna. By making a gear box to hold the two piece gear, this allows the push pull tube to be under the floor and the control mechanism to be under the seat. This frees up the area behind the seat for baggage without having to construct a bag to keep the baggage off the controls and push pull tube. The up elevator tube is in tension not compression, therefore a 5/8 tube will do whereas the Fox has a rather complicated built up larger diameter tube. The Fox has your feet and buttocks are on about the same plane, that is the planes floor, whereas the Airdale has the floor dropped 61/2 inches which makes it a much more comfortable plane to spend long hours in. The Airdale was the first to use Grove spring gear before they were adopted to Avid or Kitfox. The dropped floor on the Airdale is more aerodynamic than the flat floor of the Fox. The Series 5-7 Foxs have continued refinement and are very nice planes to fly. I like the aileron-flaperon harmony better on the Series 7. The Airdale is more comfortable, you can pull the seats out and sleep in it, and has room for a lot more stuff. kurt schrader wrote: >--> Kitfox-List message posted by: kurt schrader > >This will be very interesting.
