Michel,
> > It is the ground effect....
There is another factor at work here too. If you
remember what happens when you do stalls, you are
trying to hold level, but approaching the stall speed
you usually start a rate of descent anyway. Almost
everyone does. It is hard to hold level because the
AOA change at the end must be increased more rapidly.
Same happens when landing. Most of us don't really
get it right to the stall. We just start a descent at
a fixed AOA just short of the stall angle, until
ground contact.
Many short field guru's out there actually fly below
the power off stall speed when crossing the threshold,
but with lots of power. They chop the power as the
tail wheel touches and the plane is definitely not
going flying again.
So I think that we tend to not really rotate all the
way to stall AOA in ground effect when landing. We
just get to that point where the plane settles before
we catch it, and we think we stalled it on.
16 degrees AOA is a real good number for the stall AOA
for most small planes.

John,
You are right. That was what I was really asking,
though performance comparisons are great too. These
are the kind of improvements I wish I had on my plane.
I would like to be able to camp with it and sleep in
it, if needed, too. I agree that a elevator tube in
tension is much preferred. No sign wave problem in
compression to worry about. And lighter weight.
Better seating and seat removal?
Don't know about the others, but I have a problem with
the stick hitting my legs when at slow speed or
landing. Just when you need it most, you have
restricted flapperon travel. A center stick would be
lighter and less restrictive IMHO.
A different turtle deck mount would be helpful. Too
many fasteners to open just to get at the baggage.
Maybe a handle in the middle and 3 back latches, with
a hinged attachment to the canopy would work better.
It should be little harder than the doors to open for
access or wing fold.
There are a lot of "improvements" on my list of
dreams...

Jim, thanks for the posts on the VGs. When I get some time I plan to make
some up using and go for it. In the past many years I've been on this list
there've been several people who've installed them and none, that I recall,
have posted anything negative about them. I think I understand how they
work, but what I don't understand is why they don't affect cruise speed.
One would think that they would create a parasitic drag on the wing, but
apparently the increased lift conteracts any drag produced.
Didn't you say you have a model 3? What was your angle of separation? I
have the model 5 (Riblett) wing, which is different, and I guess I need to
know how far back to place them so I don't have to screw around with all the
experimenting of sticking and unsticking and sticking... them which takes a
lot of time that I don't have. I recall that someone said that 6 inches
worked best. Anybody have any comments on this?

I have the Czech floats for my Fox - in fact I am selling them as I am
moving and need to look for amphibs.
I have the full streamlined rigging etc and can measure them up and post.
If anyone's interested I am now serious about selling these floats.
Painted white with Black decaling - twin water rudders and set up for
immediate bolt on for Model 4 or Lite2

Try the following sites. "www.skyshops.org" and "www.czaw.cz"
Click on floats and also look for installation kits.
Skyshops is the US distributor and located in Florida.

Just a short note - These floats are pretty durable and can handle some
serious waves etc - I wouldn't want to drive them into a log or a rock at
20Kn but then again I wouldn't want to drive any floats into a rock or log.
They have serious 1/8" runners on the bottom and can handle the wear etc
associated with beach parking if required. I never did this as I have a ramp
type dock.
They are amazingly light and my 582 will handle a pax and full fuel on a hot
day with no problems.

Darrel,
I talked to one of the VG package manufacturers about drag from VG's. He
says that you do not get added drag if they are placed correctly on a wing.
There is a spot, about 12% of the chord back where you start to get some
flow differences. If the VG's are placed ahead of this spot, you DO get
more drag. If the VG's are placed at or behind this spot, they do not add
drag. They are not as effective if way behind this spot.
This is my understanding of the explanation. They claimed to have done a
lot of experimentation with Burt Rutan to come to these conclusions.
In the March issue of EAA Sport Aviation, Page 71 there is a very definitive
illustration of VG size and placement on wings. Everything is defined
relative to the wing chord. Placement, size of VG's etc. Let me know if
you can't find it and I will try to pass this info along to you.

(off topic)
Friends, since the list is quiet and no one else did, I'll take Graeme's idea
and present my hometown.
I live in Tonsberg, about 70 miles south of Oslo, the capital of Norway, and by
the side of the Oslo fjord at about its entrance.
Tonsberg is a small town of about 60,000 inhabitants. It was, in the
middle-age, the royal city and the place where the famous Oseberg viking ship
was found. Until the 70s, it was also a big whaling center. Many ships from
Tonsberg were whaling in Antarctica and many places in South Georgia are called
after the creeks and bays from nearby where I live.
I fly my Kitfox from Jarlsberg, which is a privately owned airfield outside
Tonsberg. Incidentally it is the same Jarlsberg as the cheese you can buy in
the US. The Count of Jarlsberg is the only aristocrat of Norway. The reason is:
Much like for Ireland and Britain, the Norwegian landlords were all Danish,
from the 15th century and until 1814.
The Count of Jarlsberg was the only Danish noble who made Norway his country
after the treaty of Vienna. Since then, his descendants used the relatively
flat land to cattle and diary products, hence the famous cheese.
The airfield, built first before WWII, was used as a decoy airfield by the
Germans during the war, and as a chartering plane airport during the whaling
golden age of the 50s and 60s.
Jarlsberg ENJB is at a corner of Sandefjord-Torp ENTO CTR zone. It means that I
have to call Torp first, get cleared with squawk code, go back to Jarlsberg
frequency, transmit blind for the eventual local traffic in the pattern, then
call again Torp once airborne.
Some people don't like that procedure and try to fly from other uncontrolled
places. But I like it. It makes me acquainted with radio procedures and I am
now not afraid to fly say, across Europe, feeling quite confident with my ATC English.
Flying from Jarlsberg, we have first, to the east, the Oslo Fjord that we try
to cross at its narrowest part, maybe 8 miles wide. On the other side of the
fjord, farming land in a relatively flat country, all the way to Sweden. To the
south, the coastline is beautiful but inland; lots of pine forests and few
places to land in emergency.
To the west, the mountains. Flying along a valley, it is possible to find
landing places but otherwise, again, lots of pine forests. Flying further west,
the central plateau of Hardangervidda. Here we are above the forest and in the
tundra. Lots of stones, though. And finally, at the north, a more complex
picture because in the region of the city of Oslo and our international
airport, Gardermoen.
Here is a funny link:
http://toensberg.clickwalk.no/indexe.html
You can "walk" in the streets of Tonsberg. It is in English.
I hope you liked this "virtual visit." Of course, I will love to show this from
the air to any Kitfoxer who ever come to Norway. Now I look forward to reading
about your place.
Cheers,
Michel
PS: In fact, my birth place is Brussels, Belgium.

Wow, great Michel and a bit of a historian as well. Your area sound as if its got
lots of tiger country but is also very beautiful. I know what you mean about
radio procedures. Fortunately, Australia has just adopted the American system
which will simplify things for us. Currently our radio procedures are unnecessarily
complex. Lets hope others take your lead and write about their home town.

I find it takes two people to pin the wings in place, and only one person to fold
them! Just make sure you rotate the flaperons up as you fold the wings otherwise
you will damage them.

Please send a pic of your engine and the particulars
like hrs, hp, weight, and price to my e-mail address.
I'll try to post it on our local EAA chapter web site.

Ray,
I tie a rope to the tie down on the strut. I stand at the forward spar
where the pin goes in. I slowly rotate the wing by pulling on the rope.
Works great! I have one hand free to put the pin in. Jeff Classic IV

I continue to wonder what to really carry along in my
plane. I suppose a lot depends upon the terrain I
plan to fly over. Considerations are:
Tire patch/pump
1 qt of oil
Water
Small socket/screwdriver handle
Adjustable wrench
Sparkplug
Duct tape
First aid kit
Space blanket
Small jump start battery
If required:
Flares
Hand held radio
Gun
Survival fishing equipment
Anyone have any other thoughts besides Jeff and
Michel? What works for you? You Canadians and
Alaskans might know best. What does the "required
list" say?

Hi,
About a week ago, on of the listers posted a link to a story about a couple of
microlites on a world tour. One of the planes was forced into a lake by bad
weather.
If anyone has saved the link to that story or if the original poster reads
this could you please copy me the link to that particular story.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: | The weighing process |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Steve Cooper" <spdrflyr@earthlink.net>
General question...what's OK NOT to weigh as part of the airframe? In other
words...I bring my GPS with me and it clamps in a mount. I ring my hand held
and it clamps in a mount. I bring the battery for the radio and I attach it.
If I was flying aerobatics I would bring my chest chute. All these kind of
things add up to overall weight of the plane...but I wouldn't include them
in a weight and balance. Is there a FAR that says more about what can be
ommitted from the weight and balance numbers?

Bob
The microlite that crashed in China was one of the two South
Africans that were making the round the world trip. Here is
the site http://www.safreedomflight.com/ sounds like part
of the kite wing broke at 11000 ft and the pilot lost his
life.

Subject: | Hand held instalation |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Graeme Toft" <msm@byterocky.net>
We are panel mounting an Icom A3 into our fox and hoped we could get some advice
about the best way to do this. We have heard that electrical noise can be an
issue with two stroke motors but various suppression devices are available.
An intercom and external aerial will be included into the wiring also. If someone
has already dealt with this installation we would appreciate some advice before
we go ahead.
Thanks.
Johno.

Hi Bob
The link is http://www.safreedomflight.com
Alan was one of our local club members and a good friend of mine. We are
all devastated about the accident.
