--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Bruce Lina" <airlina@usadatanet.net> Eric, I finished my Continental IO-240 powered Series 5, last summer and here are some numbers. Empty weight is 967 lbs which includes the heavy engine(in the 250 lb range) , larger than stock 8.50 tires which weigh 27 lbs apiece and the requirement for 15 lbs of ballast(which just kills me to have to lug around after trying hard during the construction phase to stay light). This ballast is required in the tail because the heavier engines cause a forward CG problem. A suggestion here if you use a heavy engine is to get everything you can in the tail and use a light propellor (battery, ELT, and if I had it to do over again I would build a aft compartment which would allow me to substitute tools for the ballast that I carry now). I also have a full electrical system . I operate from a grass strip and my solo (typically 1250 lb range) takeoff ground run is about 400 feet, however at gross wt. (1550 lbs) the takeoff run is in the neighborhood of 700 to 800 feet which would make it interesting out of a 1000 ft strip. My typical climb rate solo is right around 1000 FPM at Vy and drops to 700 FPM at gross.I have climbed the airplane to over 10000 feet and find that it can sustain a decent climb rate up to altitude. There are certainly ways to lighten the airplane but that is the choice of each builder. I wanted the starter, GPS , Transponder, Tundra tires etc so I pay the weight penalty price. All this being said ,I having more fun than I ever thought I would in the airplane and after 100 hours in it ,I learn something new about flying it every flight. Have fun on your Kitfox journey , Bruce ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richardsons" <victoryfield@btc-bci.com> Subject: Kitfox-List: New Kitfox5 builder > --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Richardsons" <victoryfield@btc-bci.com> > > I have just purchased an unstarted series 5 kit & found this list. What a great bunch!A lot of knowledge passing back & forth.Anyway I have a few questions,I'm looking at using an O-235 or a Rotax 912.I want to build it light,I'd even consider going non electric on the O-235.Can anyone give me an idea of the empty weight, takeoff roll &climb rate using either?I want a basic panel. Can I get it under 800# using the non elect O-235?I've had 3- Taylorcrafts so handpropping is no problem.I flew a Kitfox 5 last week with an O-200 wt/ 1000# & I'd like better performance. The last T-craft I had got off in 250-300' @800'msl & climbed at 800-900 fpm on 85HP.I really thought the Kitfox 5 could beat that hands down.I talked to Skystar, they really push using the Rotax. They claim it "spools up faster"& will always take off & climb faster than the other engines.I am more familiar with the O-235 & have one available.I need to fly off a 1000'grass strip comfortably.I'm in SW Michigan not far fr! > om Kalamazoo,Thanks for you help!Eric Ricahrdson=0D=0A > >

    Subject: Density Altitude chart
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Michel Verheuge <michel@online.no> Hello, I have uploaded the density altitude chart I made, in the sportflight's Various/Misc folder. It is supposed to be folded in two, one side explain how to use the chart, and the other is the chart itself. I did two scales for pressure, In.Hg and HPa, and two scales of temperatures, Celsius and Fahrenheit. The file is in PDF format and should be printed on a colour printer. Let me know if something could be improved. Cheers, Michel

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Vic Jacko" <vicwj@earthlink.net> Eric, the name of the game is to think in ounces not pounds. If you are really interested in keeping it light then give me a call and I will tell you how to build a Series 5 with 160 HP at 870 lbs or less without adding ballast to the tail. The 160 HP should produce climb rates near 2000 FPM! --> Kitfox-List message posted by: Fred Shiple <fredshiple@sbcglobal.net> Eric, Just flying off hours on a Series 6 with 912S. Weight came out at 820# with day VFR panel (no vacuum). I gained 45 lbs.(estimated at #17 for Prop-link hub, 10 for 8in tires, 8 for optional door/ turtle deck lexan and 10 for the fancy paint), so it could easily have gotten down to 750# as John indicates. It's the very rare O240 that gets under 900#. Those who report flying both 912S and O240 report the 912S is signicantly lighter on the control compared to the O240. I'm in Toledo OH if you'd like to take a look. Fred do not archive I have just purchased an unstarted series 5 kit & found this list. What

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Michel Verheughe <michel@online.no> Thank you, everyone, for your comments about the folding of the wings. I'll note that it is not that difficult, that one should be careful with the flaperons and watch for fuel overflow. But the general idea is; to avoid it is the best. Cheers, Michel do not archive

Plenty of power, cheap to operate, light in weight, Cranks if you look at it, how could you inprove on a 912 Rotax.
