As far as the header venting through the supply lines, I have clear 3/8" Polyurethane lines installed from my wing tanks to the header. Every time you do a pre-flight, you can flick the lines with your finger and see air bubbles rise from the header to the wing tanks. The gas will sit in the header overnight and "gas off" leaving air bubbles. I see these bubbles more in the main 3/8" lines than I do in the 1/4" vent. Again, the main secret is to have the fuel lines running continuously uphill. Where the lines bend to enter the wing tank, you can see the bubbles stop if that section of line is allowed to be parallel (keep them going uphill). Don Smythe DO NOT ARCHIVE

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Marco Menezes <msm_9949@yahoo.com> Thanks Don. Tthere appears to be several ways to skin this cat. To summarize my understanding, the header will likely vent adequately, as is, through 3/8 fuel lines provided they run continuously "uphill" from Header to wing tank. OR, I can install a 1/8 pipe barbed fitting at inboard high point on right wing tank to plumb tygon vent line from header (per Darrel's instructions) OR I can install a vent valve at header, open preflight to get fuel flowing then close for flight. Thanks to all who responded. Don't you know that I am now a 51% stockholder, have full management authority and am expanding the circulation to worldwide? You guys with a subscription are all S.O.L. as I am canceling all domestic subscriptions to those over 40. We at KitPlane Magazine are going to put a younger, more energetic spin to our (my) publication. We will have (and invite those with the hair) a special section on "Extreme X-Flying". Our one-time offering of T-shirts will read "Watch This!" In the spirit of a more youthful image, I'm going for the hair implants and will "sh_t-can" the Ol' Lady for one of the Hilton twins, Naw, BOTH of the Hilton twins. :-) This will give "EXPERIMENTAL" a whole new meaning to me. (Michel, as a reward to you, I'm hiring the Olson Twins (Norwegian descent) to provide you with some Lap Dancing (as in Laplanders) No need to thank me, just keep buying my magazine. Thanks to all who responded. > I believe that about summarizes it all. To put a barbed fitting into the tank will require some fabrication of "bosses" to give you the necessary thread engagement. Since this is an important modification, I have to consider what I would do if I were going to fly the plane with my children???????? I would install a short vent just so I would feel comfortable that the header was full of fuel at take off. However, I feel confident that the header would vent itself through the normal supply lines. I like the 3/8's because the bigger the supply line the better the flow of fuel and vent capability through a common line. Again, I'd (as a minimum) install a short vent for pre-flight purposes and initial fuel fill (easy, cheap, can't hurt). I'd also use clear 3/8" clear Polyurethane lines for supply. It gives me a warm feeling being able to "see" the transfer of fuel going down and the air going up. Don Smythe DO NOT ARCHIVE

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Dale Kister <2@dalekister.com> Just as a point of reference, I have been operating my model 3 Kitfox for 160 hours with no in flight vent line on the header tank. I plumbed it this way because it allows the fuel pump to transfer low pressure (suck fuel) all the way from the wing tank. If you vent the header tank, no such suction is available to enhance fuel flow. I do have a vent valve at the top of the header tank which I can use to get rid of any entrapped air from the header tank during preflight. The vent is a manually operated valve and is plumbed with a hose to conduct any fuel overflow overboard while the vent valve is open. So far in my hours of operation, the header has always stayed fully filled with fuel. I have watched air passing up through the fill tubes and fuel flowing down while in flight. It has been unnecessary to manually vent air out through vent valve during preflight because the tank stays full of fuel. Hope I haven't just confused the issue with my explanation, but it has always worked on my Kitfox. By the way, My Avid flyer, model 4, is factory designed and plumbed the same way that I plumbed the Kitfox, and has given no fuel flow problems in 60 hours.
