--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Gill Levesque <canpilot03@yahoo.ca> Hi Guy's, Yesterday I flew my fox on a 333 mile cross country flight ! Might not be significant to some of you who regularly fly long distance! But to me it was a milestone!! We,( flew 150 miles with a Challenger UL) flew under the Toronto control zone and once clear, climbed above the bumpy stuff ( too much work at mid-day!!!) to 6500 ft.! Glass smooth, and hands off flying!!! The view was outstanding! With 40 hrs, on the fox I am starting to really enjoy it! Some questions for 582 drivers!! I cruise at 85mph @ 5800 rpm. Is this a normal cruise rpm setting for a 582-C with the stock GSC prop? I have tied to land with 10 -15 degrees of flaps and have no luck! The fox floats forever and I can land shorter without!!!Whats the deal???? My fuel burn seems (?) to be about 5 gal.hr. Is that right? for a 582? Thanks Gil Levesque Model 4 1050 582 C box Strut fairings soon! Still alive and flyin!!!! Gil ---------------------------------

Is this a normal cruise rpm setting for a 582-C with the stock GSC prop? 85 with a 582 is a pretty good speed depending on weight. You can expect to pick up 5-8 mph once you get the struts faired. > I have tied to land with 10 -15 degrees of flaps and have no luck! The fox floats forever and I can land shorter without!!!Whats the deal???? Excess float often is a result of too much speed and/or prop pitch. Generally, slipping works best to get it down steeply. As you practice you'll find that there'll be times when you want to use flaps and times when no-flap slips work best, and times where you'll use both, depending on load, ambient, and different runway conditions. Also practice in getting approach speed down to 1.3xVSo. > My fuel burn seems (?) to be about 5 gal.hr. Is that right? for a 582? > Thanks > Gil Levesque > Model 4 1050 582 C box > Strut fairings soon! You'll get many different "opinions" on this one (and those above), but my experience was 4 gph overall once you get your jetting and prop pitch dialed in. 58-5900 was my best cruising rpms. The engine just felt like it worked best at that speed. Congratulations on your fly-off. Darrel

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Jerry Liles <wliles@bayou.com> Cruise sounds OK. Hard to say for certain as each plane is different and the calibration of tach and ASI is often suspect. As for the float on landing with flaps, you are landing too fast. Flaps allow you to slow down, take advantage of it. Try more slow flight with flaps in the landing configuration at altitude to get a feel for what your airspeed should be and practice, practice, practice. Oh yes, congratulations on the cross country flight. 333miles is nothing to sneeze at in a 582 Fox. --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Bruce Harrington" <aerowood@mcsi.net> Hi Gil, Numbers are good (cruise speed at rpm, fuel burn). I would suspect your 582 idle is a bit fast and causes the float on landing. I always set my idle to about 1600-1700 rpm, and it made a big difference landing. For takeoff and landing, I used the same amount of flap (don't know what degree). Made it much simpler to do go arounds, touch-n-gos, etc.. The amount was enough to have to stick fly in the pattern (not trimmed for hands off). Hope this helps. bh, ex-n194KF, 582ed IV-1200, 800+ hrs > Hi Guy's, > > Yesterday I flew my fox on a 333 mile cross country flight ! --> Kitfox-List message posted by: Aerobatics@aol.com Congrats.... I was born and raised in Montreal .... And also have a KF ...but a 2 with a 582 cruise at 80 at 5,500 to 5,600. My strip is 850 feet and found the key is correct speeds. I now have about 250 or so hours flying it out of here.. Very cool flight! Dave

Nothing startling , but a noticeable improvement. I would guess that my grass TO run was 100 feet shorter and climb was not as sluggish as before. Definitely need more testing but I am sure the proper prop engine combo once we find it will do wonders. Got mine flying but having over heating problems oil and cylinder head temps. Suspect airflow problem but bafling is tight. How big of an opening do you cut in the bottom cowl? Mine now is flush with the firewall. Peter Gleason
