I changed my Maule hard wheel to an Aircraft Spruce sport builders wheel.
Cost just $25 for the wheel and a few more dollars for the bearing and
oversize washers. Very cheap and a much softer ride. It takes out that
annoying pavement vibration. Works well off field also.

Yes. Thank you Don. I will have to face this issue sooner or later with
wings already closed and beautifully painted. It seems like a crime to have
to open them up, but that's what it looks like I'll have to do to be safe.

      Guy,
As many, I also loose some of the subject matter during a thread....You
say your wings are complete. To refresh, are they painted in Poly Tone or
what? You already have cracking/peeling of the Kreeme, right?

Yesterday I went to the Northwest EAA Fly-in at Arlington, WA. It is the 3rd
largest fly-in in the US. As usual, the Washington weather showed it's stuff
by hanging dark clouds over the airport like bunch of soggy Kleenexes.

But there were lots of planes and displays. Skystar was there, of course, as
was EAA Chapter 103 of Caldwell, ID. They are the ones who bought and built
15 Kitfoxes in assembly-line fashion. Although Skystar did not give a forum

Gary this "cracking kreem" thing is being made into a much bigger deal than
it really is. This happens a lot on these lists. If your wings are already
complete, no problem. In the past there have been members who have
successfully cleaned and resloshed completed wings. It takes four guys and
some care, but it can be done. A gallon of MEK in each wing, cap it off
good, then start rotating. Ensure it's done in the shade to minimize
expansion. Much easier if you still have your wing rotators. It's not
necessary to remove every molecule of Kreem from the tanks, only to give the
MEK a chance to disolve the mold release on the inside surface that was the
cause of the problem in the first place. Nothing wrong with the Kreem.
It's good stuff, but better if diluted 50/50 with MEK. If you painted in
Poly Tone and get a bit on the wing it's not a big deal to patch paint it.
That's the beauty of Poly Tone.
It's very easy to get "wrapped around the axle" on this stuff. If I were
you and can see spiderweb signs of cracking in the tanks I'd go ahead and do
it now and be done with it. A few hours work then one less thing to be
concerned with later when you'd rather be flying.

      Randy,

On the Kitfox the tape I used was 1/2"x.045" clear VHB. I don't remember the part
      # but on my Rocket I've used 3M #06382 black acrylic plus attachment tape.
I've seen this in white and gray as well and it should be available at any automotive
      paint supplier.

Buy the way, I would really like to sell N24ZM to a good home. If any of you know
of someone sitting on the fence about buying a Kitfox let me know. I will take
any reasonable offer as I want to complete my Rocket sooner rather than later.

it seems like it lags 20MPH behind until finally stabilizing at pattern

I forget what the recommendation was. I just tighten till the wheel is very
stiff to turn but will turn with the nose down, hard to explain. If it does
shimmy by all means bring the nose up, slow way down and lightly touch till
      you get it stopped.

Have someone hold the tail down and tighten until it takes about 12lbs of
pressure to get it to break away and start to swivel. You can you a fish
scale for the pressure if you have one.

      Hello all

I am having trouble getting the tension right on the nose wheel swivel nut.

Started having a shimmy on nose touching down. I have the reinforced nose
gear, and no signs of problems with the gear arm.

Yes.. Flew in Thursday with Stan and Phil from the Desert Fox Squadron.
Actually got a compliment from the local FAA Tower on our three ship
landing.. Don't hear that from them very often.... Some of the local EAA
group left here Wednesday and others left on Friday.

      I'm a non-kitfox-owner lurker, but I am flying a Pelican (I call it a
composite kitfox) with a Stratus EA-81. I bought it from Mykal and email
him regularly. Not outstanding support but definitely good enough. He
always answers my emails/phone calls and I think the engine is spectacular.
I don't think I could be happier with any other engine, I absolutely love
it. Economical to buy, well proven, cheap to maintain and operate, and very
smooth, quiet and solid. Starts with the touch of the key and keeps humming
      along.

Sorry for the commercial. No association with Stratus at all, just
answering first hand feedback. He's busy working a full-time job and
building engines on the side, not much time for fluff I'm sure, just
assembling and selling a proven package. No glitter or marketing, it's a
simple, belt-drive twin-carb 100HP engine. I meet the Pelican factory specs
with the Rotax 912S. It's heavier but that's the tradeoff. He claims 185
lbs (no radiator, fluids, etc) and I put it on a scale and got 184.5 but you
can plan on 220-230 or so FWF. It will take away from usefull load,
      something to think about.

Like I said, I love it and would buy another. Only 75 hours airtime so far
but talked to many other high-time Stratus guys before I bought and have
heard of very few problems. Very good bang for the buck.

      Randy,

On the Kitfox the tape I used was 1/2"x.045" clear VHB. I don't remember the
part # but on my Rocket I've used 3M #06382 black acrylic plus attachment
tape. I've seen this in white and gray as well and it should be available at
      any automotive paint supplier.

Buy the way, I would really like to sell N24ZM to a good home. If any of you
know of someone sitting on the fence about buying a Kitfox let me know. I
will take any reasonable offer as I want to complete my Rocket sooner rather
      than later.

I changed bearings to fit the axle by puchasing from a local bearing house.
But then had to add oversize washers as safety stops. Could have done it
just as well by using a piece of steel tubing to shim the space between
      bearing and axle.

      Don,
Actually, when I look into the tanks they look fine. However I can
only see a little of the tank, even with dental mirrors. The tanks date
from '94 and were supposedly done "after" the Kreem problem was addressed,
but it sounds like the original application was marginal at best. It seems
that to fly with any chance of coating separation is to risk some
off-airport excitement. I am imagining large sheets of this stuff coming
off and clogging virtually any tube. Am I wrong? Can it be filtered safely?

Check your fuel level indicator connection. It may be leaking and dribbling
back to your quick drain. Very hard to detect. I just ripped open my wing
thinking I had a fuel tank leak, only to find a tattle-tale stain running
back from the fuel indicator right to the drain. Try plugging all three NPT
      holes with plugs.

Well yes...but you have two fuel tanks. If it ever does happen, it is not
likely to occur on both tanks on the same flight. Filter each line and you
will be protected. like Darrel said, it sounds like a lot more work than it
is in reality. I did it alone, by setting up the wing on two padded saw
horses, plugging everything up, filling the tank with a gallon of acetone,
and then rocking the wing from the wing tip end, and flipping it over on the
leading edge ever so often. After the first flush, I went one step further
and rigged an auto fuel-pump and fuel-filter in a loop so it cycled the
acetone through the filter and back to the tank, regularly rocking the
wings. maybe an over kill, but at that time, we were all even more paranoid
about fibreglass partials in the fuel tank. When I was done I had a squeaky
clean tank, lightly coated with diluted Kreem, fully flushed of all
      particulates.

      Don,
Actually, when I look into the tanks they look fine.
