A question concerning the Kitfox model 3 (and probably others) elevator asymmetry.
I was told by someone that the elevator is asymmetric, i.e. higher on one side
than the other, in order to compensate the for the torque by the left-hand prop
of a Rotax 582 and, if changing to a Jabiru (or any other right-hand prop
engine) I needed to cut my elevator in two and weld it again at the opposite angle.
Someone else (more reliable because he went from 582 to Jabiru on a model IV)
tells me that this is not true, the difference in angle of the left and right
elevator is to suppress flutter since our surfaces are flat and not aerodynamic
profiles. Therefore there is no need to change anything to them when changing engines.
Can the list kindly confirm or contest that statement?
Thanks in advance,
Michel

Even though I've got way to much on my plate I've finally made a decision to
drop everything and go to Oshkosh this year and I'll be staying in Camp
Scholler registered in the camp locator as Darrel Morisse. Anyway some of
us can meet up somewhere for some face time? Somewhere on the property or
maybe the Acey Ducey bar (sp?)? It'd be a shame for all of us to be there
and not make some sort of contact. Also, if you're staying in camp
scholler, drop the list a quick line and I'll do my best to look you up.
Make sure you register in the camp locator or we can't find you. I'll be
arriving Sunday evening and leaving Friday morning. Hope to see some of
you.

I will be in Oshkosh the whole week. I am working in the UL Barn in their Fly Market.
Our Chapter will also have an anti-P.O.P. display aircraft which we are using to
teach
kids about how/why airplanes fly. It's a hands on display, bring your kids.
My KitFox will be parked on the UL runway or somewhere in the UL aircraft parking.
I'm
camping in the Volunteer campground located just off the south end of the UL runway.
Just
look for the flag pole with Chapter logo and the 'Ol Stars and Bars flags.
Hope to meet with some of you. I will have cold beverages and an extra chair.

Hi, 582 equipped Listers,
The battery in my 582 equipped Fox, seems to be spitting out of the vent tube!
Is this acid? (looks like it is affecting the paint on the gear leg) and if so
what is the cause? Overcharging? The battery is 14amp-hr. Do I need a larger
one or should I look at another regulator? Can I add light bulb under the panel
to burn off some excess power? What batterry do you 582 guy,s use? Any help

Hi Gill
I recently replaced my 14ah acid battery with a 17ah gell battery. It is a
little larger but for the extra power well worth it. Also you can mount it
on it's side (lay flat) as there is no acid to be able to leak. There not
much more expensive either.

Darrel,
I know of four that will be hooking up in the Denver area that plan on
being there Sunday through Tuesday. Our group will be leaving the
Sacramento area of Northern California Tomorrow morning to hook up with
another at Afton Wyoming in the evening. Our group will consist of 4 or 5
Kitfoxes - all Model IVs and two Rans - one a Coyote and the other a
Courier. Plans call for a Sunday evening arrival. Current plans call for a
Friday departure. We will be camping in the home built area.

Hi Lowell,
My sincere condolences go out to you and his family. In the past four months I
have lost two friends in ultralight crashes. In both incidents, the planes stalled.
Last week I lost a friend, Claude Demersthat lived in Sudburybut was temporarily
working in Thunder Bay. Claude was looking to buy another airplane as
he had sold his Bushcaddy last winter. With the love of flying he found somebody
to go flying with in Thunder Bay. He came over on Canada Day and was telling
me how he was definetly buying another plane. He loved flying and was such
a nice guy! It really gets me thinking of how one day you could be gone and that
is whyI shouldn't hold back on doing the thingsI want as tomorrow may never

Gil,
You need to check the charging voltage with the engine running. Should
be around 13 Volts or so.
I use the Powersonic 18 AMP. It's a gel battery that has no vent. It is
a tad bigger but, you don't have to have a battery box with the gel. That
makes it overall smaller. Mine is about 4 years old and still cranks like new.
Also, get the Key West regulator.

Michael,
From my classic 4 manual:
"It is built this way so there will always be an air load on the elevator
and it will not be "blanked out" by the horizontal stabilizer". Do not
straighten the weldment."
There was no option for matching elevator to left or right had props when I
ordered the kit.

I wouldn't change it Michel,
Elevators are not normally skewed for torque.

Hi guys:
I'm hoping to be at Acey Ducey friday night sometime around 8:30, but
otherwise if any of you want a gathering place come out to the seaplane base
for the Annual Watermelon Social (pig roast, Beer/soda, a commemorative
glass WipAire beer mug, and door prizes - all for $15) Best party at
Oshkosh. Of course I'm opinionated as I'm in charge of the Seaplane Base.
Oh yeah, you can ride the seaplane bus both ways from the main field for $2.
The bus is located south of the ultralight runway and runs every half hour.
But buy your tickets at the base as soon as you can as we only sell 500
tickets. And when they're gone they're gone.
It certainly would be nice to put faces with names!

It sounds like your problem lies with voltage, not your battery. Check the
battery voltage with engine running. Should range between 13.8 and 14.5. I
suspect it's up around 16+ which will boil your battery. If this is the
case, replace that rectifier with a voltage regulator from Spruce. Problem
will be solved.

and if so what is the cause? Overcharging? The battery is 14amp-hr. Do I
need a larger one or should I look at another regulator? Can I add light
bulb under the panel to burn off some excess power? What batterry do you 582

Previous post correct Michael. The asymmetry was to counteract flutter.
Adds a tiny bit of drag, but at Fox speeds not an issue.

Hi, All.
I'm building a kitfox IV-1200 with a 100hp NSI engine.
I'm having problems figuring out the engine mounting
instructions. The instructions call for (3) AN4-26A
bolts. I'm wondering if this may be a misprint because
there are five positions and five cotter pins and five
castle nuts. The AN4 bolt size is exactly what the
airframe will accommodate. However, the mount is much
larger (probably AN6) and there is no mention of a
bushing.
The folks at NSI left a message saying they are at
Oshkosh until the 9th, so I can't check with them, soI
thought I'd ask here to see if anyone else remembers
this and/or had a problem with this.
Thanks
Eric

I put the door near the front....I can check the motor oil.

My inlet is 4.5" high by 7" wide....I also had to make a little bump under
it for the oil lines.

I have a locking push-pull cable control in the spot where carb heat would
normally be. When I pull all the way out, the flap will be completely shut.

I have a half inch around it now....I may end up with the dremel grinder and
increase it.

The "3" must be a misprint... as for the slightly oversize holes, that is
normal....no spacers needed....as far as I know it hasn't been a problem for
anyone.

I made my own bushings out of 4130 tubing stock. It was a simple matter of
buying some from Spruce with an OD that would fit inside the mount holes and
an ID to fit the bolts. A little reaming and filing and it worked fine.

Subject: | New life for old Kitfox |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "User" <paul@wilsonnet.flyer.co.uk>
I have this week taken into my care, a Kitfox Mk 1 which although it was
built in 1989 , it only has a total of 68 flying hours.
The owner / builder is sadly no longer with us, and as his family are keen
to see it fly again, they have asked me to get it in an airworthy condition
and to renew it's UK permit to fly.
It has been standing in a hangar for a number of years, although the engine
(Rotax 532) has been run periodically.
It is in fantastic condition, mainly down to the high standard of
workmanship when it was built, and it's good storage conditions.
My questions to the list are mainly, what capacity battery does it require,
as the original has been removed, and during it's forthcoming inspection ,
are there any items I should be especially looking out for, given that it
has not been flown for a long time , are there any modifications or updates
that it may have missed out on during this time, either to the engine or
airframe, which it may benefit from, is there a good source of information
on line I could look at which would help me to get it airworthy again ?
Any information would be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance,
Paul ,

Don,

Thanks,

Guy,
Look in the Spruce catalog under electrical (index; Voltage
regulator/power supply). I have a 2001 catalog and it's located on page 367 along
with
Trim Systems. Spruce part # PS030.
Their catalog does not mention the name Key West but I'm 99% sure that is
the Key West Regulator. Price $59.95 (2001)
I used to have the phone # for Key West but I guess I've lost it for the
third time now.

Hi David.
You are from Woodstock, GA. Thats about 40 minute flight for me to air acres.
I will be going to Oshkosh next Thursday, till Sunday.
If you can give me the part numbers and quantity of those 8 mm prop flange
inserts, I will try to find them for you, from Lockwood.
Who knows, If they don't have them on site, they may place the order in for
me from Oshkosh.
If they don't have them, I'll ask them who should I go to while at the show.
I live in Lithonia, trailer my Classic IV and fly out of Covington, GA.
Let me know if you want me to do this.
Cheers. Eric.

Subject: | pull the RAVE engine and install a Jabiru 2200 |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Rex & Jan Shaw" <rexjan@bigpond.com>
Steve,
I not only fly my Kitfox/582 but I have about35 hrs in our clubs Jabiru
plane with the 2200 motor. I totally agree the Jabiru is the better motor
but the troubles the club has had with it in nearly 1000 hrs is
dissapointing. Not enough to say forget about having one though. I think
Jabiru are learning fast and buying one now rather than 4 years ago should
be a fair help I would think. The Jabiru 2200 uses less fuel and performs
better. Probably quieter too.
Unfortunately I am a twostroke fanatic from Kart racing for many years and
was lured towards the Rotax and only learn't later about planes after buying
mine only about 9 months ago. My Kart racing background also leads me to an
interest in improving performance of a twostroke. So given the chance now I
would chose the Jabiru, but I was interested in the Rotax 582 to 670 swap
together with modifications.
Rex.

Hope to see some of
you.
