I imagine it is the old buffed down 20 x 7 x 8 ATV tires you can't find. I'd
gladly give you some but I'm in Australia. I changed them because they only
have to look at grass and they get a leak due to prickles. They are only 2
ply.
Now I have put on lawnmower tyres that are 18 x 6.5 x 8. They are 4 ply and
have a very mild tread. You can also readilly get tubes for them. Much much
better. Also they only cost $63AU each

At sea, it is mostly the height of the antenna that gives the range, Jim. On the
top of my mast, I have maybe a range of 40 NM although, in good conditions (high
pressure) I have received signals over 150 NM. Mind you, coastal stations
send with more power than the vessels. If I can hear them it doesn't mean they
can hear me.
I am still not too sure about the difference between maritime and aviation needs
for VHF communication. In both cases, the closest station should cover the furthest,
which it does, both in FM and AM.
I have one good argument for aviation AM, though. When we fly here, in uncontrolled
area, we are asked to transmit blind our position and altitude on 123.50,
which is our Norwegian Aero Club frequency for GA. When I monitor that frequency,
I know that a weak signal that I can barely hear is a plane far away. A strong
signal, on the other hand, means that the plane is close and that I better
look out for it. That is not possible with FM that will either, give a good
signal, or nothing.
Are we getting anywhere here?
Cheers,
Michel

This may have been addressed but,
When the FAA decided to use AM it was for good reason. The way that FM is demodulated
it will lock on to the strongest signal and any other signal will not be
heard. It is important that all stations be heard and the interference is to
let you know you are not alone.

Don,
I've "retired" two times already. Judging by your comment, I still have 9

Try www.air-techinc.com go to engine stuff then sparkplugs then sparkplug
wire and caps. I think the NGK caps and rubbers are only about $2.50 for non
resistor type and $4.50 for resistor type.

Michel
Yes, as you say Michel, the higher the antenna the greater the range and
therefore the greater the interference distance. With an airplane you are
almost always much higher than 40 feet, at least if power lines are in the
area. With FM you may not override another signal even though they are much
further away. and worse you would not know that there were two planes
talking at once.
See Clint's response he sums it up succinctly.
