Other than the usual garbage I get daily, there were no attachments to List
messages here. If you right click the message and check properties you

My friend, Fred Howes just passed away. We are getting his beautiful Speedster
ready for sale.
One day it ran fine. The next day it dropped hundreds of rpms on one mag.
Lockwood(very helpful) had us lop 1/4 inch off each plug wire and re-attach the
connector. Same problem.
I am a 532/582 two cycle guy(sort of).
Any ideas on how to trouble shoot this??
Are there any 912 mechanics in the Central Texas area. The airplane is in Georgetown(30
miles north of Austin) Texas? We need a professional!!

The easiest way to find the problem is to use a 12v timing light and check
each plug for
firing. just shine the light somewhere. You will most likely find that one
of the coil
is out and it is a probable ground wire. this is the black wires that are
coupled at a
1/4 inch size screw. you may pull on each of these and find it also. But
try the timing
light first, it will give you a direction to go.

My computer (on Yahoo) shows addresses that you can
click on as "attachments" whenever they are part of
the message text, but not in the to/from, ect areas.
When someone gives a reference site to go to in their
message, it shows up as an attachment, for me anyway.
This may be what some are seeing.
In troubleshooting my system, I learned that files
with xxx.SHS are executable files and are being used
to send worms. None are required on your computer and
you should never open a file with that "SHS"
extension. Microsoft is just coming out with a patch
to show those files. Normally they are hidden.
They also advised to never send anything that says
"send this to all your friends". Simulated Microsoft
warnings have been going out like that to send worms.

opened the carburettor and found scratch marks on the outside wall of
the Mixing Tube which is conical in shape. Looks like one arm of the
float bracket was jammed as it travelled up and did not come down
temporarily, so the needle valve blocked the fuel passage, hence loss
of power.
I put in a new float bracket ($20.18) and the left and right arm travel
freely. Today I ran the engine 0.3 hr on the ground and flew 1.1 hr
in the pattern and the engine behaved well. Hope this is the only
problem area and that I have fixed it.

I couldn't help but notice. Since the 912s shake so bad why not replace them
with dual Ellisons TBIs. No float bowl and you control the mixture. I have
heard upwards of 9Gs on start up and shut down.

Ellison has a web site. I would talk to some folks that you can get one on
one with. 9 Gs referring to gravitational force like in pulling Gs. That's a
lot for component a to get shook around. You might be the first to pioneer
the application. Could be done. Simple set up. I would think Rotax would
have fuel injection by now. Any way, a manifold could be made and you might
get by with one TBI throttle body injector. I use a single Ellison 3A to
feed a 1.8L turbo engine that makes about 160HP.

Rick, I don't understand this recommendation. The Carbs on the Rotax 912
UL are nearly bulletproof. There have been very few problems associated
with this set-up. If I remember correctly, with the Ellison, there are
fuel pressure issues and some reports of hesitation when hitting the
throttle too aggressively. Why mess with success?

Jim and Clint, I am still not convinced. At sea, or in the air, if we assume
that all mobile stations have the same power output, on both AM and FM, the
closest will override the furthest. To my understanding, the only difference is
that, in FM, the signal doesn't need the voice modulation to override. If I use
a maritime VHF and press the PTT, even without speaking, I will modulate the
frequency and block the frequency for further away stations. But not those closer.
As an example, when coastal maritime stations send their scheduled information
to mariners (equivalent to NOTAM) on working channels, they often modulate the
frequency with silence a few minute before broadcasting. That is to prevent
eventual unobservant seafarers to call the station for other business. You know
that the frequency is modulated because if you then lower the squelch, it
doesn't make a difference, no background noise.
That's the quality of FM.
Other than what my own experience of using, with limitation, AM as a "range
finder" on the quality of the signal, says, I see no other advantage.
I think the bottom line is: ICAO (not the FAA, Clint) doesn't find enough
advantage to FM to justify the cost of the change. We often think that aviation
is at the vanguard of technology. It is not the case if we look at the
computers ATC services are using and I think it is not when it comes to radio communication.
