In Australia you can buy these things for very much less than that. Just
maybe not from an aircraft place. We get them from an Electronics supplier.
I think it's called Radio Parts but we have a bit of a flood here at the
moment and it's too hard to get in the shed to check. I'm a retired
electronics tech and intend using an optical sensor in the top of the header
tank. If you wan't one I suggest checking good electronics suppliers before
aviation suppliers for this. Rex.

Was it the mixture or was it a matter of enough RPM. Don't forget these
CDI's they are putting on don't fire 'till 300 RPM. You can have the prop
turning over and looking great and hanging in like the battery is fine and
it won't even kick. It might be only swinging 299RPM sort of thing. If you
don't realise this you blame everything else. Perhaps when you got a start
with the Ellison you had the RPM's and compared that start to others where
the RPM's were only 299 but you thought it was swinging OK and should have
started. I used to have trouble with my 582 until I worked this out. The
same with our club Jabiru. I just put in a new Odyssey battery and it now
starts instantly. Rex.

My MKIV Classic Speedster has static ports in front of the doors but they do
weird things so the tubing is just pulled of and it hangs free in the cabin
behind the panel and it works fine. Skystar told me it would read high but
it doesn't we have checked it with a GPS several times. I'd like to do it
more professional but there is no problems as is. Rex.

Subject: | Inside static port termination |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Fox5flyer" <morid@northland.lib.mi.us>
With my previous kitfox (582) I had the static source terminated behind the
panel. The only downside I noticed was the airspeed read about 3mph high,
but then again it was only an 85mph cruiser. I'm not sure what this would
do to a mode C indication as I didn't have a transponder. The altitude was
probably off a little bit too. This may cause more of an error with the
faster foxes. Anybody know how to figure this stuff mathmatically?

Bob,
I fly out of S MD
How far along are you?
Sounds like John Kings bird dogs may have a formation flight adventure
to look at your plane!
I assume you are in the ADIZ or do you not keep it at one of the
airports there?
I"ve landed an Arrow 200 retrac on your big new airport with the
jets..... is that you??

Seems all the schematics show the ASI hooked in with altimeter and, of
course, an encoder if you have one.
I had no idea if the Encoder could function independent of ASI or with a
seperate static port.
My Instraments are due for their inspection next month so i'll know how
the list recomendations end up effecting the accuracy.
Right now i'm leaning towards seperating the ASI and porting it by
itself inside panel and then Altimeter and Encoder seperate port and
eventually buying a static port just for the Alt and Enc.
Comments on that scenario or it's effects?

Subject: | Workshop Table and Shipping Crate |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Jim Carriere <jimcarriere@yahoo.com>
Hey folks, here is something I have to share that might help one or
two prospective builders. I can't be the only person to have done
this, but anyway...
I used part of the top of my kit's shipping crate to make into a
4'x8' work table, about 3' tall. The idea isn't much of a stretch,
it came to me as I was breaking down the crate.
One of my friends at work told me, "I wish I'd thought of that, I
took the crates my RV-7 came in, broke them down and threw them
away."
In polite terms the table is solid as the proverbial brick outhouse.
I screwed/nailed AND glued the table legs and crossbraces.
Removing ALL of the excess nails and staples from the crate lumber
took a few hours. Note some of the lumber is spruce- pleasing to
work with, some is cedar- willingly splits and very difficult to
work. A couple sheets of 4x8 waferboard on the sides of the crate
were in nice shape, so I placed one of these on top of the plywood
top of the table to serve as a clean, smooth working surface (the
plywood in the crate was rough and knotty). When this piece of
waferboard wears out I will replace it with another one. I bolted a
vice to one corner, and a short wall at the back (to keep tools from
rolling off). Lots of storage space underneath too!
Excluding the vice my work table cost me about $10- glue, screws,
nails, and some 1"x3" lumber for the crossbraces.
Ten bucks for a work table puts a smile on my face.

Jim, I would never, even in my wildest dream, think of insulting generations of
airmen (my father being one of them) who have been flying all their life, by
assuming that I know better than them. I am sorry if I gave the wrong impression.
And now, we close the subject.

Subject: | Slightly bent landing gear |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Michel Verheughe <michel@online.no>
Dear listers,
Today we had a nice airshow at my airfield. I flew with some other microlight
planes in a formation with low passes. It was fun.
At the end of the show, my son flew with our instructor to pass his final test
for the microlight license. Because the airfield was then for departure only
(no touch and go) they went to the instructor's own landing strip, a nasty and
very short grass strip along a high tension line. There, my son didn't do his
best landing, and it went a bit hard.
As they came back and I took the plane in the hangar, I noticed that the fabric
that covers the left landing gear (bungee type) was a bit wrinkled.
At a closer look, I noticed that the forward tube was slightly bent, presumably
from the hard landing. On a length of about 40 cm, the tube was bent about 5 mm
inward.
My question is: Can I straighten it out using pieces of wood and a screw vice
or does it need professional care like stripping the fabric, heat, etc?
Thanks in advance,
Michel

Michel,
It looks like you are headed for a gear up landing soon, if you try to bend
the tubing back. As you may know, the tube gear has a long history of
folding up (tubes breaking and bending). It has happened too many times to
count, especially on the Model III-IV and some on the Series V.
As you land, the side forces on the gear stress the welds, and they
eventually break. This happens to experienced pilots too, not just bad
landers.
So if I were you, I would strip the fabric, replace the bent tubing, and
inspect all the other tubes and joints very carefully. On the other side
too.
The only permanent cure for the problem is to get spring gear.

Hi Jareds,
Each instrument only requires a source of outside
static air pressure to perform its task, except for
the ASI. That also needs dynamic pressure from the
pitot tube to compare against static pressure. All
the instruments could have seperate static sources if
you want. They are just ganged together to save
weight and complexity. So, yes, you can seperate any
instrument from any other to another static source.
Like all things plumbing, there can be leaks. It is
just harder to find a static air leak. On mine, I
used a little soft squeeze bulb and put it on the
static line where it hooks up to the static head. A
little vacuum is all that is needed. You try to set
it for around 100 mph, 1000" alt, or 1000'/min ROC.
Then let it sit and see if it leaks down. If it
leaks, go thru all your joints and tighten and check
them until you've got no leaks.
I used the hose and water method on the pitot tube.
You can also use this on the static source, but lower
the open end to draw water and pressure from the
static side instead of putting pressure on the pitot
line. Again, just set a vacuum to some nice round
speed/altitude, etc and let it sit. If it changes,
you have a leak to fix.
Inside static sources vary in accurace with doors,
windows, or vents open or shut. Also airpseed does
change the inside static pressure. With all those
variables, an outside source is preferred. Altitude
inaccuracy is probably the worst problem. You don't
want to run into someone by lying about your altitude.
Stall speed inaccuracy is bad as you found out too.
The outside source only needs to be in a place that
gives accurate pressure readings and where it won't
easily collect rain or bugs. SS uses the tail area on
the bottom side ahead of the horizontal stab. I have
seen someone use the area just behind the seats and
doors for static vents on both sides. Don't know how
well that works, but there certainly must be other
good places besides where SS uses..
No mater where you set the static source, if it leaks,
you will get inaccurate readings.
If your encoder reports its altitude to you too, put
it on a different static source from the altimeter so
you can compare and see if you have a problem. If
they are both on the same source, they both go wrong
together and you don't know until you hit something.

I heard a story recently about just this type of thing. The fellow did what
you proposed and straightened it back out...but withen a few hours he had
the gear leg colapse because of an undetected crack. My best advice is:
Strip the fabric and get it repaired by an A&P. It's not worth risking your
bird or your life is it? My 2 cents.

Thanks Don. This is what I seem to understand from reading other posting on
this list. I think that, with time, my old round cowling/bungee gears plane
will look like a smooth cowling (for the Jabiru), spring gear machine. Not the
old-fashion look that makes the charm of the Kitfox but the rather modern look
that ... makes the pilot feel better.
Cheers,

Jareds, I am going to take a shot in the dark at your ASI speed at a stand
still of 20-42 mph.
I think you may have moisture or some other obstruction in the line and
when you disconnected the ASI it worked when tested with the Jeep ride.
Suggest you check the tubing from the pitot to the connection point for your
ASI. It would be safe to blow through it if the ASI is not connected. Let
us know if there is no pressure resistance or if you get any water out of
it.

Hi Michel,
I had some bent tubes after a kersplat on a road years ago. The factory
and I straightened with 2x4 and large hammer. I put many more landings
on N194KF after that. We had checked for cracks.

I purchased the static port and installed it where skystar says to and had more
error in as and vs than when I disconnected it and used cockpit pressure so I
never hooked it back up.
