The guy that built my plane would 100% agree with you. He put in a water
pressure gauge to be sure. Also he is a mechanical engineer. I know mine is
a little tricky at times to get all the air completely out of the system.

why not open the top, it'd be like a car hood and hot air rises so it would be

Hello Foxers,
Almost everyone has a need for some form of LED installation in his/her
panel and from time to time the subject comes up on this list or the Aerolectric

Michel, I fly with the KFM 112 which is very close to the same design as the Jabiru.
Kitfox provided a cowl with a reverse air scoop on the bottom for that engine
option. I experienced some over heating early on but have since managed
to take care of it following the baffle design now offered by Jabiru. It works
pretty good.

Torgeir, I know that this is not my thread but since I intend to install a Jabiru
and make an entirely new cowling, I follow the discussion very closely.
I just made a little drawing here, at work (don't tell my boss! :-) and I wonder
what you think of it:
http://home.online.no/~michel/tmp/cooling.png<http://home.online.no/~michel/tmp/cooling.png>
Could that be a good cowling for a Jabiru? I mean, with outlets on both sides,
much like Howard has it. ... BTW, which engine do you have Howard?
Cheers,

Hi Charlie,
You're right the top outlet is the best, I just wondered how long it will
take before someone ask this question.
The reason not using the top vent method is safety only.
If something happen with your engine, as oil leakage, cooling fluid etc.
etc., this block your visibility when you most need it.
Cheers
Torgeir.

Subject: | Side vent "end of story" |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: AlbertaIV@aol.com
To All,
Thanks for the comments on side vents. A couple possible downsides were
introduction of bad ju ju into the cockpit and getting oil stains on the side.
I don't think I will worry too much about the ju ju and oil stains on the
side can be used as a time to "wash me" indicator.
For the side vents, I plan to use a product that I used in many places on
Alberta. It's a thin (about .040") fiberglass sheet that's used on
Greenhouses. It's rigid enough to hold the shape and quite strong after adding
a small
backing ridge. Can also be doubled up for areas needing extra strength. I
used this for the door bottoms, turtledeck (handmade), top cowl door and,
fairing covers around the horiz/vert tail section.
For the cowl vents, I made a paper template and creased it to provide the
look and fit I needed. Lay the template flat onto a piece of the .040"
fiberglass and trace the edges and crease points. You can then scribe the
fiberglass and break it along the creases. The fiberglass will not separate when
bent
90 degrees but you do have to go back and add some epoxy to re-bond the
break. Add some fiberglass reinforcement and it's a done deal.
I will cut out the bottom of the cowl as necessary and use the same .040"
glass to put in a new flat bottom. Again, reinforcing as necessary.
As an extra bonus, I will close in the radiator and fair in the bottom
and sides all the way back to the aft carry thru tube. Leave the aft well open
as the exhaust. This will fair in all of the Grove gear attachment. and
provide a warm spot for grabbing some extra cabin heat.
Even the Rich Man liked the paper template side vents taped onto the
cowl. If he likes it, it must look OK. He sure has become critical in his old
age.
Thanks again,
Don Smythe

(I'll answer several email, here)
Torgeir Mortensen wrote:

Oh, yes! I will, Torgeir! I'll look at the side outlets ONLY if the Jabiru
importer thinks it's a good idea and that it fits the baffle.
Dee Young wrote:
> Kitfox provided a cowl with a reverse air scoop on the bottom for that engine

Thanks. I know, Dee. I wrote to Skystar, asking if their smooth cowl could fit
my model 3 but they couldn't answer. I think I'll have to make my own and then
I can decide where the air outlet will be.
Rick wrote:

Indeed, Rick. This is why I'll only consider it if it matches the Jabiru baffle.
Torgeir Mortensen wrote:

I wrote exactly that two days ago, Torgeir, pointing out that hot air on the
top could even improve lift.
> The reason not using the top vent method is safety only.
And I came to the same conclusion. Jim has also a point in having the oil
stains on the belly instead of the sides (and certainly not on the windscreen).
But maybe, if I have a leak, I'd like to see it at once, on the side of the
fuselage ... I don't know.
Cheers,
Michel

Michel,
Good point. Even a small leak could show up quickly on the sides and
give you ample time to "fix" the small leak before it gets bigger. In the case
of a 582, I will hold a top cowl opening for the subject of a later design. I
think a top door might be cockpit adjustable and only used during maybe the
hottest of days when needed???
Just a thought,
Don Smythe

When I had the problem of oil blowing out of my
breather, it would come from the side cowl seam and
stream past my door. (full glass doors) Very easily
spotted.
But vents on the top are another problem. Not only
can oil blow on your windscreen, but if you have a
fire, it can do the same. The windscreen is not much
seperating you from fire. It is better blowing by the
door than into the windscree. You see this a lot on
single engine radial planes. The top of the ring cowl
is often shut.
Given that, I am still considering placing a vent door
on the top behind my turbo to vent off that hot air
before it gets to the intake on warm days. It needs a
door to shut in emergency, or below 60 degrees F.
Another possibility is to make it an upper intake vent
to the engine intake and just let the hot air blow by.
My measurements show that the carb temp is 40 degrees
hotter due to the cowl heat. That robs performance
like using carb heat all the time.

Indeed, Kurt. Here is how Morten, the Norwegian Kitfox/jabiru owner fixed it:
http://home.online.no/~michel/tmp/JabCowl.jpg
The opening on the side is going either directly to the carburettor, or via a
carb heater.
While on the subject, I'd like to ask the list:
I understand that my outlet will have to be 1.5 the size of the inlet. Can the
outlet be bigger than that, or is it the optimal ratio?
Looking again at the photo, Morten has an opening for the oil radiator that is
in front of the engine. That lets also air under the cowling. Has my outlet to
be 1.5 the size of these three frontal inlets?
Tanks in advance,
Michel

I've always understood that the "rule of thumb" is 1/3 in on the high
pressure side and 2/3 out on the low pressure side. A small lip on the low
pressure side will aid in lowering the pressure of the low pressure side
that will actually suck the air through. Simply put, it's the low pressure
side that pulls the air through so it's important to really think it through
so that you don't get your "outgo" in a high or neutral pressure area. Did
I make something simple sound difficult? I sometimes do that... I've seen
several scoops that had roughly the same opening in front as the rear.
Won't work very well.
Howard's side scoop should work pretty well in that the side of the cowling
is generally a low pressure area.

That ceremony sounds familiar. It works!

AlbertaIV@aol.com wrote:

You could be on the money here Jose, I always bleed the coolant system
through the top screw on the inlet flange on the head and usually gat
another pint of fluid in the system over just filling the main filler inlet.
Gary A
Lite2/582
Gary,
Here is the way I bleed air and it works like a champ every time. 1.
Fill the system. 2. Bleed the top screw on the water pump housing. 3.
Disconnect the 1/4" hose from the head to the filler assy (at the filler assy end).
4 Temporarily cap the 1/4" copper stem on the filler. 5 Temporarily attach
a 1/4" clear tube (3' long) to the end of the hose. 5. Top off the filler
neck with coolant mixture and start a syphon through the clear tubing into a
clean container on the floor. 6. Maintain the filler neck full with mixture as
you syphon off from the head. 7. As you syphon, shake the engine side to
side and you will see bubbles in the clear tubing. 8. When the bubbles stop,
allow the coolant to go down a couple inches in the filler neck. 9. Remove
the plug at the filler and the Temp clear hose. 10. Quickly reconnect the
original hose to the filler and top off coolant.
Gets all the air every time and only takes a few minutes......

I have the NSI Turbo....The main reason I added to vents was to let the air
going by the turbo cleanly escape. Even at idle, I can put my hand behind
the vents and feel the hot air moving out....If I can just get my
registration, I'll test it in flight!!! Very frustrating!!!

Subject: | Radiator for 582 |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Jose M. Toro" <jose_m_toro@yahoo.com>
Hi Guys:
Is any of you using a 582 with the radiator placed inside the cowling, like in
Avids, to reduce drag?
Jerry Liles <wliles@bayou.com> wrote:
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Jerry Liles
John the Avid B and C models used the 532 and had the radiator mounted
in the cowling on the right (passenger) side with a rather large scoop
to direct air to the radiator. The radiator was isolated from the
engine by a large baffle from the firewall to the cowling to force the
air to go through the rad. The hot air was exhausted out the right
side in most installations. Cabin heat could be obtained directly from
the radiator just by opening a little door in the firewall. There were
modified installations with shark gill inlets, air out the left or out
the bottom of the cowling, etc. Cooling was a problem on a lot of those
airplanes, partly, I suspect, because there was little airflow over the
engine, which would serve to dump considerable extra heat. Cooling
problems were solved by the system in the MK IV. My MK IV won't
overheat on 100deg days, even on the ground.
I wonder if cooling problems in Foxes would not be helped by improving
airflow through the cowling across the engine and exhaust?

Is anybody going to Greenville, Maine this next weekend? I'm going, and
hope to see some Kitfoxes up there. What are my chances? This'll be my
first trip up there. I'm picking up my buddy at Detroit Airport on
Thursday evening, coming in from California, and we're driving straight
through...almost. I sure hope there are some KF's there.
