Builders,
I'm considering changing the main gear on my Model IV. Avid has a bungee style
for the Kitfox that gives it an 11" wider stance. How much wider is the
Grove spring style gear than the stock mains?

Small engine repair shops normally carry it. Try a
lawnmower dealer that has a shop.

The only Tygon tubing good for gasoline is "YELLOW" tygon (might be a
broad statement). You normally won't find the yellow Tygon at auto stores. At
least, that has been my experience. On the other hand, the yellow Tygon was
furnished in my kit for the wing tank to header vent line only. There has been
reports of the yellow stuff not performing well after a while (gets hard, etc).
Why not consider clear Polyurethane from Spruce. I've used it for all
fuel lines and had samples soaking in gasoline for long periods of time. Never
have seen it loose it's grip, get hard or any other bad thing. However, it
will turn yellowish after a few months.
Other options are SAE-R7 (rubber fuel line) or SAE-R9 (fuel injected
rubber fuel line). Both are available at the local Auto stores.

Jimmie, I bought some from a motorcycle shop and it was interesting stuff.
It first absorbed - I guess - fuel or something in the fuel and became
elongated and quite rubbery. then it began shrinking - lengthwise - and
hardening. I replaced it when I began worrying that the shrinking would
eventually cause it to pull from the barb fittings.
There was another formulation of the Tygon, but very expensive. I didn't
try that. I just put in an order at ACS.

OK, now I'm starting to get worried...I have had BLUE Tygon at my header
tank to wing tank return line for 2 years. Because I purge the air from my
header before each flight I watch the tubing for air until it runs clear of
bubbles and so far it is as good as the day I put it in. What should I
expect will happen to it? I use all grades of auto gas as well as avgas on
occation.
Also, I bought my YELLOW Tygon from the local Honda motorcycle dealer/shop.

Jimmie,
Ace Hardware sells the clear vinyl tubing and the
manufacturer claims it will handle all fuels and
solvents. I am thinking about using it but I will
first test a piece of it in a jar of auto gas, av gas
and alcohol.

AT my last condition inspection I replaced my yellow tygon tubing. It was still
in very good condition, slightly stiffer then new but fine. I flexed it, bent
it checked it all out and it was still fine. Probably seen over 4000 gals of
100LL and Hi Test Chevron auto fuel. Clint

Ron, the blue stuff is fine. I've been using it for years with no problems
and it's readily available at any snowmobile dealer. I've never used the
yellow, but if it says Tygon it should be good.

Jimmie,
I replaced the yellow tygon over a year ago with the blue Bing alcohol resistant
fuel line from ACS. Works fine so far. The yellow line was still OK after three
years but Calif started adding alcohol to auto fuel so I changed to the blue
line for fuel sight gauges and vent line. Replaced all the mil-std-6000 with
SAE-R9 for the main fuel lines.

Very good idea to replace the MIL fuel lines as I experiencedit breaking up and
restricting fuel flow. It wasn't if I was going to have a forced landing but
a matter of when. If anyone has this stuff I highly recommendreplacingit ASAP.

Don't laugh and curse at me for this....I have at least 5 brand new 55 HP
HIrth engines for sale at 1/2 price or better. They are still in the box and
equipped with Bing carbs. Is there any market out there for these. Want
opinions but, be easy....
These engines are out of warranty and go as is.

I tried the Hot Prop on a Rans S12XL with 582 Rotax engine. I think it was
a little quieter, but can't really say that I saw any significant
improvement in climb or cruise. I certainly did not think it was worth the
price.

A friend of mine had an engine feliure in his Quick
Silver GT500 two weeks ago. He uses Castrol TTS (full
syntetic) mixed 50:1. His engine is completely
destroyed inside.
I use it also in a Rotax 582 in a Drifter I have. It
worked great for five years, engine and plugs were
always "clean". Eric Tucker at SkyStar told me it was
a good choice. Well, Castrol people told him they
changed the formula a lot, (besides that now the oil
is red instead amber and it feels lighter).
Does anybody of you use Castrol TTS oil? Have you seen
some changes?
Any way, be careful.

Don, Check the following link for the Rotax recommendations. The gearbox
oil is the same as the crank case oil. That is the reason Rotax recommends a
gear additive in their engine oils.

I use a four stroke oil from Yamaha. Yamalube. 20w-50 in the summer and I
forget which for the winter. it is a semi-synthetic , and it has a gear
additive built in. Its about $2.50 ish a QT. at a yamaha bike shop.

Are they 2703 or 3202 model, electric or recoil start and what is the gear
ratio of the gear box.

I have dual differential brakes in a MKIV Classic. I need a little brake
fluid. The stuff in the system is red in colour. I assume this is Aeroshell
for synthetic rubber seals Mil-H-5606G or perhaps some equivalent. The
problem is I live in Australia and am having big problems trying to get
anything although I did find a supposed equivalent from Castrol but it was
going to cost just over $40. I get told everyone just uses automatic
transmission fluid. This worries me but maybe it's OK. I just don't know.
Can anyone enlighten me on all this please. Thanks, Rex.

Hi Francisco
I find oil choice is very much a personal decision (wars have been started
over a topic like this ;-)). Some will try to convince you to use their
choice of oil. My personal feeling is since I live on the East Coast of
South Africa, where humidity is often a problem I prefer to use a good
mineral oil with the least ash content. Yes, the downside is that you do
have more carbon build up and probably require more decokes.
The bad side of the synthetic oils are that many of them are hygroscopic
(able to retain moisture) and as such would certainly promote corrosion
whilst not in use - especially at the coast. This can end up with bearings
etc getting chewed up - maybe something like this happened to your friend?
The previous owner of the my Kitfox ran on synthetic, but he was on our
highveld which is a lot dryer than the coast. As soon as I am finished
with my current supply of synthetic, I will be changing over to a mineral
based oil which is not hygroscopic.
An easy home test (borrowed from one of my fellow SA pilots) to test oil
for hygroscopic properties is to take a tablespoon of the oil and heat it
up in a frying pan (use an old one or mommy may get upset with you). Once
heated, add a small drop of water. Then allow to cool. If the oil and
water separate then the oil is not hygroscopic. As with many synthetics,
on cooling, you will not find that drop of water - it has 'dissolved' into
the oil. (Obviously do not boil the oil water mixture, as the water may
just evaporate and your experiment may not show the correct result.)
Hope this helps
Regards
Roger

Kitfox-List: Castrol TTS for two strock engines

A friend of mine had an engine feliure in his Quick
Silver GT500 two weeks ago. He uses Castrol TTS (full
syntetic) mixed 50:1. His engine is completely
destroyed inside.
I use it also in a Rotax 582 in a Drifter I have. It
worked great for five years, engine and plugs were
always "clean". Eric Tucker at SkyStar told me it was
a good choice. Well, Castrol people told him they
changed the formula a lot, (besides that now the oil
is red instead amber and it feels lighter).
Does anybody of you use Castrol TTS oil? Have you seen
some changes?
Any way, be careful.

Rex,
Do you know anyone in the military there? They
probably use 5606 in their aircraft and might have a
few extra CC's for you.
I bought mine from ACS, but I suppose that is not an
easy answer for you down there.
