A friend of mine had an engine feliure in his Quick
Silver GT500 two weeks ago. He uses Castrol TTS (full
syntetic)
Probably the problem was caused by water absorbtion. Synthetic can do this.
Some oils are part synthetic and part mineral to stop the problem. Synthetic
oils are very good in use but not standing idle. Maybe some later ones do
things to help I don't really know but my Kart racing experience tells me we
all needed to flush the motor after a meeting and run to normal temp on
mineral oil or we got lots of bearing failures.
Hope this helps, otherwise I can only suggest asking the oil companies or
testing in a jar in the shed,
Rex.
PS
I know a lot of people won't accept this but if you doubt it at least
check it out.

Do you know anyone in the military there? They
probably use 5606 in their aircraft and might have a
few extra CC's for you.
Thanks for the tip. I already found that out actually but I don't think it
is much help to me. I know Aircraft Spruce have it and they have a new agent
here in Australia but he only gets a container of goodies over about every
six weeks and I like flying too much to wait that long. I'm actually hoping
to hear the idea of automatic transmission fluid is OK although being able
to get Aeroshell locally would be the best answer.
Cheers Rex.

I think 2703's. I will look in the box today and get all the other data.
Don't recall seeing a gear box attached but I have a box full of them too.

You may need to try a Lynx or a Bose headset with earplugs. My 582 has
soundproof on both sides of the firewall and it's still very loud. I flew in
a KF with a 912 the other day and it was loud too.

Hi Gil,
I had the same problem and purchased a Sigtronics High noise P/N SP-22N and it
solved my problems. It would also help to have the intercom connected direct instead
of running on the batteries. Have you got a bulb seal around the firewall?
Besides this, that is about all you can do unless you install a firewall blanket
but make sure it is fire resistant.

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Lowell Fitt" <lcfitt@inreach.com>
More info on oil selection.. At the Rotax seminar at Oshkosh this summer,
Eric Tucker explained the Rotax oil recommendations list. He said that EPA
requirements necessitated the removal of certain additives that were
previously used as anti foaming agents. Some oils were then determined to
be unsatisfactory for use in Rotax 912 and 914 series engines. Included in
the no longer approved list was the Motul 5200 I had previously been using -
he specifically mentioned this fact.
The foaming issue was also the impetus for the change in dip sticks that
would result in a higher reserve in the oil tank - more clear oil under the
foam layer.
His advice to 912 and 914 users would be to stick to the Rotax recommended
list. The simple advice to use a good quality oil with gear additive
apparently no longer applies. Rotax is constantly testing the various oils
on the market and the approved list will change in time.
All this is according to Eric Tucker

Richard,
They are the 2703 models with recoil start. Includes complete exhaust system,
dual Bing 54 carbs, dual ignition, fuel pump, (2) single carb air filter and
plugs.
I have two 1:2.97 ratio gear boxes (type GK40.296US) that are not in the boxes
with the new engines. They look new but have no idea whether they are used
or what the condition might be. They turn OK.
The boss wants $1K for each engine and $150. for a gear boxes (OBO).
I have nothing personal to do with selling these engines. Just trying to help
the boss. However, I would never get involved and tell a fellow pilot something
that is not to the absolute best of my knowledge.

I built a 40' X 11' Ultimate Door 8 yrs ago and it has performed
perfectly. You can buy the plans only or the plans and metal parts prefabed.
I fabricated all my own parts. I'm cheap! I have no power,so I use a
counterweight and an old iron wheel w/ a crank handle and can lift it w/ one
hand easily. It faces East and is all translucent panels,so it doubles as a
morning heater. I looked at a lot of hangar doors, and built this one.

The alternative is to purge the brakes of the original brake fluid and
replace it with a silicone based automotive brake fluid. The buna
rubber seals are compatible with silicone but not with standard
automotive brake fluid. The advantages of the silicone fluid is it is
not hygroscopic and will never need replacing. I'm a bit dubious of
using transmission fluid, but it might work just fine.

I've got two of them and love them. Mine are built with a full width window
in the middle and foam insullation on top and bottom. Outside covering is
vynl siding to match the hanger. Bob U.

My model ll has nothing on the firewall and is as noisy as they come. My PS
Engineering intercom handles it with no squelch control. They guaranteed it
would work.

I thought the hardware, pulleys and cables were to light, so I used my own.
I had some of the 3" pulleys wear out prematurely. One down side of the
ultimate door is the service from the sellers. They haven't done anything
wrong and don't intend to admit it. Bob U.

Ryan Herco is a solid outfit. I've done a lot of business with them, though
it was for the company I worked for. Not sure if they sell retail. Surely
someone online will retail if RH doesn't. The part number is found in the
link.
Tygon is an absolute top brand, and no one has more specialty tubing than
they do nor knows more about it. Top quality all the way. Mostly I've used
certain types for ultra-pure water and chemical handling. Some handled near
boiling temperatures, other had to hold up to a constant 100 psi. We used a
LOT in sterile medical devices as well. Will not crack like rubber tubing
found in auto parts stores. I've bought "new" rubber fuel line which must
have been ten years old in parts houses. Cracked within four months. Tygon
will not do that. I trust this stuff more than any off the shelf auto tubing
any day. Plus you can visually see what it is doing; no guessing required.

Subject: | Re: RE: VG's, flight testing - to be continued |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: kurt schrader <smokey_bear_40220@yahoo.com>
Well folks, I have completed one clean wing test and 6
VG test flights using various quantities and positions
for them - 2 patterns as described by VG sellers and 4
of my own design. I did approximately 50 stalls total
for data. Results:
At 1300 lbs, my plane stalls around 46 mph IAS clean
and 41 mph IAS full flaps. That was my standard to
compare too. It tends to fall off on the left wing at
the stall. Maybe my weight on that side is enough to
cause that drop. It is an easy stall to catch and I
can stop the roll and stall before 30 degrees of roll.
From that, I hoped for somewhere between the 4 and 12
mph reduction promised by the VG sellers and better
stall characteristics.
Several VG patterns gave very good stall
characteristics allowing stalls that were controllable
and safe while fully stalled. They showed no tendancy
to fall off on a wing when power off stalls were
performed. Other patterns just showed less
improvement. However, I could not get a variation of
more than 2 mph + or - in the stalls from the clean
wing standard on any test. I did lose up to 5 mph off
the cruise end though.
On all but one stall I had enough elevator to fully
stall the plane. The one exception was at a seller's
recommended pattern with full flaps, full up trim, and
CG in the middle. It just wouldn't go below about 45
mph.
On the last series, with a seller's recommended VG
pattern, I also did a power on full flap stall to
determine if my ASI was acting properly at low speed.
I was fully controllable to 34 mph IAS with maybe 40%
power on. At 34, the plane stalled suddenly and
rolled hard left. I repeated the test and got the
same results, but caught the stall roll sooner. I
then returned for a full stall landing. On post
flight I discovered that the left wing had shed 21
VG's (out of 50/wing) from the inboard end. (The VG's
were just taped on and not glued on.) I think it was
the more violent departure with power on and prop
blast that tore them off. FYI, The VG's lost were all
outboard of the wing tank. There were no VG's from
the tanks inboard. I had no problem with the landing
and did not know they were gone until postflight.
I have removed the VG's for now, but hope to continue
to look for some improvement from them later. Results
do vary with aircraft, but so far I am disappointed in
my results.
The VG testing is in my logbook and I believe that
allows me to add them on again after I have finished
the 40 hrs testing. If anyone knows different, please
let me know.

Subject: | Re: RE: Wing strut fairing tests |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: kurt schrader <smokey_bear_40220@yahoo.com>
Ok folks. I haven't been just stewing over the VG
tests. I also built, installed and tested new wing
strut fairings in the past 2 weeks. These are foam
core fairings with thin carbon fiber leading edges
followed by single ply S glass covers. The profile is
a VFS design from an international collaboration. The
goal was to make lighter, less draggy and still
somewhat strong fairings for a reasonable cost.
Results:
The basic struts were approx 12.25 lbs with jury
struts attached. After the foam and graphic/glass
coverings, the struts still weighed under 14 lbs. My
50 lb scale decided to go bad after that, but with
another scale it appears that the final weight with
finish coat was still under 15 lbs per side. That
means that the fairings added about 4.5 lbs total to
the plane's weight. Much better than the 16 lb
factory jobs, but they were a lot of effort too. I
used an auto decal vinal covering that was probably
heavier and more expensive than painting, but I was
out of time. You could make them lighter than I did.
Flight tests so far show an average 10.4 mph speed
gain at cruise settings. I could tell that there was
a measurable improvement already during the takeoff.
The extra few lbs weight was easily offset by reduced
drag and the plane accellerated 10 mph more while I
established climb. So the nose went higher...
I still have to do climb tests to establish the new Vx
and Vy speeds, but these fairings definately improved
the plane. Computer modeling says that they add up to
40 lbs of extra lift at climb speeds. They lift more
than their own weight and reduce drag too.
The fairings are much stronger than I thought they
would turn out to be. The foam used is the high
density blue foam placed under poured concrete. I
dented it easily while working with it, but after
covering, the very thin (.007 carbon and .009 S glass)
shell is quite hard. The stuts are strengthened quite
a bit IMHO. This is good for float plane use where
the wings get hammered down and could bend the struts.
So a respectable speed gain, with a good light weight,
and stronger than expected too. I like them!
I still don't like the people who sit on my struts in
spite of my decal signs so..... I decided to place 4
pointy tip VG's on the wide inboard fairings to poke
their butts. Ha ha, I found a use for the VG's right
away!
Overall, I have gained 17 mph in cruise this Summer
from my radiator scoop and my wing strut fairings. A
happy camper. :-)
This ends my major aircraft mod testing, but more
tests of minor mods to follow... Like wheel fairings,
gas cap fairings, and J strut/tail strut fairings.
Maybe some tuft testing after that to see what I
missed. But don't wait up for me. I still have to go
to work, etc.
