I need to order some rod end bearings and need a part number. The units I
need are those that attach the rudder to the vertical fin on a Series V. I
believe they use male 1/4-28 threads and the bearing has a .1900 hole for a
10-32 bolt.
The best I can figure using the Aircraft Spruce catalog is the correct unit
is a HEIM part number M34-14M on page 144 of the latest catalog.
Can anybody verify for me that this is the correct part or if it's the wrong
one to set me straight?
All help appreciated.

to put something on the gear. It might be paint, clear coat or whatever.

I had my aluminum gear black anodized at a local metal treating shop. This can
be had in various colors. It is a little expensive. About $120 if I remember correctly.

I painted my Jimmy. You really have to clean it up good with scotch brite,
soap and water, rinse it well, then use some sort of alumin etch for
prepping. As soon as the etcher is dry shoot it with white poly fiber epoxy
chromate primer. Put on several coats, the last being the heaviest. Then
before it completely sets up shoot it with your chosen color of Polytone,
again starting with light coats and finishing up with a heavy wet coat. If
you have everything ready you do the whole job in just a few hours. That
Polytone will bond to the chromate epoxy like it's part of it. Very tough
stuff. Mine's been doing fine for several years with only one small rock
nick. After a couple weeks of drying it polishes up nicely too.

Jimmie,
I painted my Grove gear and it has turned out very well. I now have
over 400 hours on the Series 6 and there is no sign of degradation.
However you must surface treat the aluminum surface first. Otherwise
the paint will easily peel off.. I initially treated the surface with
an aluminum prep solution, then sprayed on a coat of adhesion type epoxy
primer, and finally the aerothane color of the aircraft.

Jimmie, I used a PPG automotive base/clear coat that seems to be holding up well.
Prepped with scotch brite, etching and PPG primer before doing color coats.
It's probable that several finishes will work if you prep well.

I am looking at them in my mind and that sounds right. I will check my
manual at the airport tomorrow, but not sure if it will show that PN. I seem
to recall having taken the rudder off for some reasons, I cant remember why,
that's what they look like. Is there some reason you cannot pull one and
measure it. There is a big quality cost difference depending on the type you
select.

I didn't paint mine.. Instead I made up an aluminum fairing from 0.020 (I think)
which I wrapped around the gear leg. I first covered the gear leg in saran
wrap, then fitted the fairing which I bent in an airfoil shape and then I filled
the gaps between the legs and the fairing with pour foam. Worked out very
nicely - no problems flexing even with my landings. I haven't bothered to paint
them, but will eventually get around to it. Probably good for an additional
0.295 knots:)
