The problem Rick is that the SS manual only gives the SS part number, not
the M-number which creates a bit of a problem. I "think" I've got the right
one picked out <M34-14M >, but would like to be sure before ordering.

I have a question. The answers about the gear finish are interesting. I
know that the aluminum spring gear is heat treated. Does anyone know if the
heat needed to cure powder coating affects the heat treatment and affect
spring qualities or strength?

I am pulling the 532 and switching to a 582 oil injected engine. I have the bump
cowling and would like to ask where you mounted the oil tank. It seems to me
that either the bracket on the engine (if it fits under the cowling) or on the
firewall. I'm concerned about easy access to check and fill the tank each flight.
Did you install an access panel and how did you do this? Otherwise it appears
that I would have to unscrew the rear cowling piece that holds the windshield
each time. Thanks much for any help.

I just check the Grove web site and they say that the gear can be powder
coated, but the powder coating process must the kept below 375 degrees f.

I had mine on the firewall, Kevin. A small hatch in the aft cowling allowed to
check and refill oil without removing the cowling.
I write "had" because I have been advised to mix the oil in the tanks. Which I
have done for the past two years and the oil tank has been removed.
The discussion is still out as to what is best for the engine and/or safer:
Premixed oil, or a separate tank. Honestly, I don't know, I did what I was
advised to do at the moment.
If you decide to go for premixing, thus not using the oil tank and pump, be
aware that the pump running dry will eventually brake down. You can prevent
that by removing it entirely, or having a section of a hose upward, with a few
drops of oil in it. I had the latter solution.
Now, I change my 582 for a Jabiru so ... no more oil, well, not that kind of
oil, that is! :-)
Cheers,
Michel

If you do choose an automotive type paint see if that paint system has an
elastomeric or "flexative" additive. Will help keep it from cracking as the
gear flexes. Anodizing and powder coat look very attractive as options. Does
powder coat handle flexing well?

The SS manual calls for mounting the tank high on the firewall and
centered directly behind the engine. The instructions called for mounting the
tank
at an angle ( /.. like this) but for the life of me I could not see why so I
mounted mine straight up and down ( I ..like this). Just put it as high as you
possible can since the oil pump system is a gravity only feed.
Be advised, the SS provided tank sits low enough that the bottom of the
tank is below gravity level of the pump input (about 2-3"). Consider this 2-3"
as unusable oil since it will not gravity feed to the pump. I put a bullet
level (tail wheel on the floor) from the pump inlet to the tank and put a mark
indicating the low oil point.
A small cowl door would be handy but you need to pull the cowl at every
flight anyway for pre-flight inspection. Always keep the tank full.
BTW, "to the best of my memory", the Kitfox list has never reported a
failure of the oil injection pump/system nor have I ever seen such a report on
any web site.

Same here Don. No reports of a oil pump failure (on a Rotax) that I've
heard of. However, I have a golf cart with a Robin engine that uses the
same exact pump. It quit pumping one day, but fortunately when it did, the
engine was at fairly low rpm and caused no damage. I tried everything to
get it to pump, but wouldn't happen. I removed it completely and go with
premix now. Since it's the same pump it's not "quite" apples and oranges.

A friend of mine crashed beause the oil injection system failed. I immediately
switched to pre-mix, and do not recommend the oil injection system. I have not
had any problem with my 582 but, like Michel, I'm going for a Jabiru.

I am building a model 5 from a '96 kit I just picked up. About a week
ago I installed the subject rod ends. As is my habit I throw the
packets which contained the rod ends in the garbage. I realized that
someday I too, might want the AN number. Since Skystar prints most part
#'s on the package I went fishing through the garbage. After looking
for a half hour my wife came out and guess what.....the first packet she
found was the rod end packet.
The AN # that is on the package is CM-3BM-14. I have an older spruce
catalogue but could not find this exact part number.
Hopefully this will help..... You did have the sizes correct.....Don't
thank me thank my wife!!

Like all other aspects of any engine it 99% of time comes down to ham fist
on end of wrench or in charge of oil, gas etc.
oil injection is great
different oils mixed together can cause oils to gel
ther is a filter as well to change

Jose,
Your report of an oil injector failing is the very first I've heard with
the exception of Darrels golf cart. In defense of the oil injection system,
there are any number of thousands of things that can go wrong with an airplane
to make it crash. The injection system has a history of being one of the most
reliable parts on a Rotax 582. To say you don't recommend the injection
system because of one failure seems a bit harsh.

Darell,
This might be Kitfox related...How did you know the pump had failed? Did
you have some kind of warning? I'm guessing you were not running full
EGT/CHT instruments on a golf cart. Heck, I never heard of a 2 stroke golf cart.
On the other hand, I don't play golf.

Jimmie, if it helps I installed a one piece solid aluminum that was built by Skystar
for the Light 2. It has worked out well

Is there anyone that has installed the one piece Turtle Deck made by Blue Sky
Aviation? Did it work out ok?
Thanks
Jimmie

By solid do you mean without the hinge in the middle? I am looking for a
way to stiffen mine because it sure makes a lot of noise in flight. I think
that is because of the hinge.

Yup, it's an EZGo 1987. Engine started making funny noises and was
beginning to seize just as I drove in the driveway. After a bit of
troubleshooting I found the pump wasn't pumping so I removed it all and
covered the shaft hole with an aluminum plate. That was a couple years ago
and it's still running strong on premix. I don't play golf either. I just
like to zoom around the neighborhood terrorizing the natives with it.
On another note, the pumps are notoriously reliable, but I understand that
most people in Alaska that use the 582 remove the pump and go straight
premix. With the terrain up there I can understand why.

Hey, thanks to your wife Jim. You get a little bit of credit too... :-)
I looked up the part at Spruce, but none listed. Same with Wicks. So I
changed it a little by leaving off a letter (second M), CM-3B-14 rather than
CM-3BM-14 and up popped what I think is the correct part. Price is right
too. I have no idea what that M means. Thanks a bunch.
Darrel
ps: These AN part numbers really do get up my nose sometimes. There
doesn't seem to be a logical standard that's used across the board and often
it's difficult to find something that explains them.
