when i over hauled the engine at 300 hours the gear was nearly worn out,
now with another 100 hours on it seems wise to check it's condition
just like changing spark plugs long before they fail

      Thanks Michel

I could only find .118" locally. Since my VNE is 125 mph I will give it a
try. Sounds like the key to it is smooth edges and careful cutting and
drilling. I also plan to use machine screws and nylon washers instead of
rivets. Hope that helps a little.

      I'm on a quest again.

The Rotax installation manual states "For aircraft installation.
The break in must be accomplished with the engine installed and
properly loaded with matched propeller for max rpm. (refer to OM)

      The OM states "Operating parameters.....
Take off speed...6800rpm max 5 min
      Cruise speed.....6500rpm max 5 min

Does anyone set it up like this?

      1. Does anyone turn 6800rpm max?

      2. What is you max static rpm? EGT at the rpm?

      Hi Larry,
I'm sure there are a few owners who set their engines up to those specs
      (initially at least).
Those are MAX numbers and running at them would lead to premature engine
      wear.
Here is some stuff to think on.
If the engine is set to allow max rpm you would have to use a "climb"
prop...or set the pitch a little finer than average. When you come back to
cruise rpm the engine is not heavily loaded and the throttle is retarded
quite a way. This leads to a lean mixture which is unhealthy for a two
      stroke.
I like to set the engines up so you hit a max of 6250 rpm on a static run
(tail tied to your truck or a nearby tree). This should allow you
somewhere around 600/6350 for take off power and around 6400 max in level
flight. These settings will still allow you to keep the engine loaded down
while mainting 5800/6000 cruise rpm.. This will keep the EGTs a bit more in
      line.
      Hope this helps

Received my Grove main gear a few days ago and am making plans to install it in

and lifting the front of the airplane by attaching rope to the points on the
fuselage where the engine mounts connect and to the engine mount where the
engine attaches. Someone please tell me if there are any precautions I need to
consider such as putting to much stress on my attach points or if I need to consider
      other lift points.

      Don & Cliff,

That is my old model IV (N193JK) and it is still owned by Chuck
Tippett. He flies up to the New England every summer. He was probably
is flying young kids at the time and was flying from the left seat.
This is the first time I saw that picture.

      Jimmie,

The Kitfox is not that heavy. Just get a couple of guys to lift up on
the wing struts where they attach to the wing and a third place a padded
support under the fuselage. Then raise the tail and place a support
under the tail wheel to level the plane. I have done that several times.

the next few days. I am leaning toward renting an engine hoist or cherry picker
and lifting the front of the airplane by attaching rope to the points on
the fuselage where the engine mounts connect and to the engine mount where the
engine attaches. Someone please tell me if there are any precautions I need to
consider such as putting to much stress on my attach points or if I need to
      consider other lift points.
