I've done this but the cowling is getting pretty thick and a few cracks
still occur. I think I can eliminate the stress areas when I form the new
cowling.

I hear that. Thanks for the reminder about what's
important.
I wish I could say I had been up five times this month (let
alone five times this week), but the weather gods have been
wreaking havoc around here. It's either rainin' or blowin'.
I can't complain though. I got out last Sunday for 1.9
hours of time logged on a dual cross-country to Atlantic
City. Got my endorsements for class D airspace as well as
class C at Atlantic City. I now have my signoff for my
first solo cross-country mission. Now I can really start
knockin' off these PPL requirements!

Hey Scott, Glad to hear.
I kinda spoiled as my hangar is 100 feet from house and have 3 runways
here.
Problem now is we are special vfr in the contol zone here today and looks
like poor weather next 5 days.
But luckily i am out side of controlled airspace by 1 mile so as long as i
got 500 foot ceiling and 3 miles vis i will likely escape to the skies.
I would expect skis will be needed soon but not till we get a base first.
Soft fluff over ploughed fields is not the best for ski flying, but they
again soft muddy ploughed fields are not the best for forced approach
either.

Builders,
I've noticed several installations of "gas cap fairings". Has anyone out there
tried changing the gas cap to a flush fitting style, so that the only thing
protruding is the "ram air / vent tube"?

My hangar is 6 feet from where I sit and about 20 feet from where I sleep,
but we have only one runway - I feel deprived. If I can find the energy to
walk the six feet, I just might go flying today. Usual between storms
weather - high broken, about 15%.
Tomorrow a local magazine (Sacramento Magazine) will do a little research on
home built aircraft for a feature article. Several Kitfoxes will be in
Placerville for that - so put me down for tomorrow for sure.

Mike,
I have done a bit of fiberglass work. It has been my experience that most
surface cracks are in the finish - gellcoat, microfill, color coat, etc.
Layering from the back won't help in these areas except in giving confidence
that the whole thing won't just break and blow away.
Another thought, when patching, the original glass should be chamfered to a
feather edge, so the new glass addition will result in a scarf joint. This
will help eliminate the cracks at the edges of the patch. I have used a
flapperwheel in a die grinder for this or if there is a lot of material to
remove a 4" angle grinder works pretty well

2 Canadian Forces Jets Crash South Of Saskatchewan - CP

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Two jets from the Canadian Forces' famed Snowbirds
aerobatic team crashed in mid-air during a routine training flight Friday
morning, the military said, according to a report by the Canadian Press news
agency.
Capt. Jay Walker of 15 Wing, the Snowbirds' Saskatchewan home base, said
search and rescue crews had been dispatched to the crash site about 65
kilometers south of Moose Jaw, according to the CP.
Walker said one pilot was in each aircraft and their status wasn't
immediately known, the news agency reported.
The 15 Wing ground search and rescue team was being assisted by two search
aircraft that were attempting to locate the pilots and coordinate rescue
efforts, Canadian Press reported.
"We're just really trying to get to the pilots right now. That's our first
priority," said 2nd Lt. Andrea Collins of 15 Wing.
Collins said the planes crashed in mid-air.
"They were on a routine training mission," she said, according to the CP.
All flying-training operations have been temporarily suspended at 15 Wing
while investigators try to determine the cause of the crash, the news agency
reported.
It was the second crash this year involving pilots from 15 Wing. In May, two
pilots escaped from a Hawk training jet before it crashed in a private field
about two kilometers northwest of the base, the CP report said.

My hangar is 6 feet from where I sit and about 20 feet from where I sleep,

walk the six feet, I just might go flying today. Usual between storms
weather - high broken, about 15%.
Tomorrow a local magazine (Sacramento Magazine) will do a little research on
home built aircraft for a feature article. Several Kitfoxes will be in
Placerville for that - so put me down for tomorrow for sure.

John, weather is pretty good here and should be the same for tomorrow. the
meeting is set for 0900. Unless you like to fly in the early morning
darkness or fly half way today, I don't know if the time is helpful to you
or not. We just got back from a FedEx shipment expedition and the view of
the Sierras, showed the snowy peaks in clear air.
It would be nice to see you both, though. Of course you would have a place
to stay.

Actually I was sitting at my computer which is in our "study" which has a
side door to the hangar. The 20 ft to the bedroom is accurate as the
bedroom is in the second story - one room removed from the hangar door, but
still within a 20 ft beeline. Yes, it is a residential airpark. The worst
part is when my wife interrupts an important hangar project with the, "time
for lunch" announcement.

Another way of checking the wires going in to the module is to grasp the
wire with
both hands close together ( At the module).
As a retired electronics tech I agree with this method as well as the pin
through the insulation. However both are a bit tough on the wires so I would
prefer to use those ideas only after measuring the resistance. Now I own a
582 not a 912 but doesn't the 912 have two identical modules ? Therfore
measure all resitances from point to point on both modules. Be sure to
measure each time swapping the probe polarity. If you then have a difference
more than a few percent between modules it is a fair assumption that the
module you suspect as faulty is. If you don't find any real difference then
go to the pin through the insulation method then if still in doubt the pull
method. This method of course can exactly pinpoint the break and allow you
to fix it.
Now I best explain a bit about swapping probe polarity. These modules use
solid state components inside that will/can measure vastly different ohms
depending on probe polarity. Say you are measuring between point "A" and
point "B". You have a red probe and a black probe on your meter. Now if you
are measuring a normal resistor or just a length of wire you can put the red
probe to "A" and the black probe to "B" and get your measurement. Swap the
probes ie:- black to "A" and red to "B" and the reading should be the same.
However do this when measuring across a solid state device that is OK and
you will get a different reading each way. Well that's basic anyway. So now
when you measure your two modules for comparrison you should have taken all
your measurements with probes both ways around. Also you should have
measured between all possible points.
The other obvious thing to do is to swap modules side for side. If the
module is the fault the fault will swap from one ignition [ ie:- ign 1 or
ign 2 ] to the other. However if the fault stays with the same ignition then
it's not the module at fault.
All this might be obvious to a lot but some have no idea about electronics
and hopefully this will help them.

Flew the Kitfox today for the first time with Grove main gear. Wow! Sure seems
like an improvement to me over the bungee gear. With the Grove gear the airplane
is much easier to handle on the ground.

That meant I had to run a vent out the end of the tanks toward the wing tip.
Works fine but, I had to cut my tanks open to do all this.
