I recently purchased an incomplete kit #gbs033. There is no firewal
forward, flight instruments, or usable covering. The work that has been
started will all be redone. I plan on using a vw with redrive, or
possibly lycoming. Can those with vw experiance and or parts give
feedback. Ron in North Bend Oregon

Ron,
Some may scold me and others will support me.... but choose your engine
carefully... Experience has taught that the Rotax 912UL or 912 ULS is
probably the best engine choice for that airframe. But it sounds like you
have a long way to go before the decision need to be made.. Talk to a lot of
Kitfoxers.. There are several on your area....

Ron, I do not have experience with a VW on a Kitfox, but from my other
experience with them on my KR-1 and KR-2, I can say you would be much better
off with a Rotax 912.
Even with a re-drive, the VW will not be able to put out the horses needed
to get your Speedster going well. The performance will be below par. AND
after you add re-drive, exhaust, accessories to the VW, it may be heavier
than the Rotax. Likewise, a Lyc would be too heavy for that model. You would
have weight and balance, and gross weight problems.
If you are concerned about cost, just try to find a used 912 or even a 582.

I would love to put that Aerovee VW engine in my Classic IV. I have the
912UL and would love to have something with one carb. It is a beautiful
looking engine. Jeff

I am still having trouble with my choke freezing up on both Bing 64 carbs on
my 912S.
It is not the cables! Disconnected from the choke the cables are smooth as
silk. And once the chokes are broken free, they work smoothly too. But it
takes pliers to break them free. It can't be done with bare hands. You can
break one free and the other one is still solid as a rock. It takes several
days to freeze solid enough that it can't be broken loose with the cables.
If I had the plane at home, I would pull it apart and see what I can find.
I have trouble believing that Bing would use a plastic not compatible with
gasoline. ?? But I have trouble seeing what else it could be.
Has anyone else experience this? If any one has any ideas what is going on,
I would appreciate input.
Randy

Ron,
I also purchased an unbuilt Mod IV that needed everything redone. It
came with a VW engine (an 82hp Mosler with an Ellison TBI). The majority of
folks seem to think that it would be a poor choice. I talked to a man with
a VW powered (no redrive) Mod IV at Sun-N-Fun. He had gone through 4 props
trying to get enough oomph out of such a short prop. He finally found a
prop through Sensinich (a 62 x36) that he said gave him good (his opinion)
performance. Or you could use a re-drive and a larger prop. I couldn't put
a re-drive on mine without changing the crank and cases. Since I already
have the engine & mount, I will probably try it. I'm already pretty
familiar with VW's. Coming up with efficient baffling to keep them cool
seems to be one of the challenges from what I've been told. I am a LONG way
from first flight, so a lot of things may change before then (a long lost
rich uncle may pass away). Good luck with your project.

Randy,
Shortly after my first start my engine began running very roughly. Dismantled the
carbs and found the mixture "piston" sticking in the carb body. It came from
the solvent used to dissolve the foam used in producing the fuel tank. The solvent/foam
sludge ended up in the carbs. Things were sticking though and not
freezing completely-a thorough cleaning solved the problem. Just a thought.

Premium Auto gas. No ethanol in it.
Fred,
Good thought. I haven't noticed anything in the fuel checks. I will try to
evaporate a significant amount - Cup? - and see if there is any residue left
behind. I did try to clean the tanks real well but,,,,,,,
Thanks,
Randy

Everyone,
Thanks to everyone who has come to my aid in reference to fusselage
measurements needed for my Model 5 repairs. I now have all the info I was in
need of, THANK YOU! to all.
Does anyone know where a Flaperon for a Model 5 can be found. I am in need
of one but am willing to buy the pair. Again, you can contact me off line at
7Suds@Chartermi.net
Also, I will try to get some pics out in the next couple days showing where
I am on my project. (You don't get to see to many Kitfox fuselages in 2
halves)
Thanks,
Lloyd, Model 5

Randy,
I know there are some that have had issues with auto gas.. It has released
something from the tank (resin like) and created a very sticky brown varnish
in the intakes, valves and carbs.. Just a thought...
