It's going very slow. The cardboard idea was maybe not ideal. I should have used stiffer cardboard, or even, thin aluminium. I use a lot of time, at home in my cellar, to smooth things out with epoxy and micro-balloon filler. The problem is related to working on the mould, i.e. a concave surface. Not easy to sand down. Anyway, I have come to a design change: while the bottom cowling will be in one piece, I intend now to make the top in two pieces: the existing aft part, and the new "nose." The reason is this: When doing preflight, I like to look at my engine and therefore remove the top cowling. If it is in one piece, it shows everything all the way to the windshield. Which is good, I can even check my instruments from behind the panel. But then, I can't seal the gap between the cowling and the windshield. Last summer, a sudden rain shower came and I was surprised to see how fast water draining down the windshield came in and dripped ... on my instruments! Not good! So, I wish to seal that with e.g. tape. But then, removal at each preflight becomes a problem. Hence this two-parts solution. What do you think? It's called turf glide and I put them on my Fox. They are 4ply so a bit harder to get around the rim but they do go on. I like them!! I'll vouch for that. The best thing I ever did was get rid of those 8" buffed down ATV tyres. My turf tyres are 18 x 6.5 x 8 4 ply. The old tyres were 20 x 7 x 8. The tread is very mild and I put tubes in as I was having sealing problems where the lugs to mount the brake discs had been welded. I had been using green slime sealant in the old tyres but when I removed them you could see where it was attacking the rims. I believe there are different types that are OK though. The green slime would be OK inside tubes. I was for ever getting punctures with the old tyres even despite the slime but haven't had one with the new tyres and I think they look better too. Also the price is good. I run about 14lbs in them which is more than the old tyres. Some are advising me to just do it and not get the FAA into the matter. I prefer to follow the correct procedure, but do not know where to go, FSDO or a local DAR? Don't know if it matters but I do not hold a repairman's certificate for the airplane. Check the "Operating Limitations" that were issued with your plane's Airworthy Certificate. Older ones require you notify the FAA in writing of a "Major modification", newer "operating Limitations" do not. AKA "Hot Prop" ........and I don't know about the FSDO involvement. My first move is to contact my AP to get going. DAR would specify. Without repairmans cert I believe you'll have to have the logs endorsed by an A&P/IA for the change. Rest of you correct me if I'm wrong on this... You're probably OK doing it without the formality unless you have an accident or plan to sell it and anyone ever looks over the logs and finds the equipment has been changed without the proper endorsements. "Knowledgable Persons" I think the reg says. Call your friendly DAR at fsdo.
