Michel,
One way is to use my favorite cling wrap (again) and
put it on the removable cowl lip. Then lay down a
stretch of silicon on the fixed lip and attach the
cowl before the silicon hardens. Clean off the excess
and let it dry. That will give you a tight but
flexible fit.
Later, remove the cowl, and then the cling wrap from
the silicon. Repeat in sections until you have the
whole cowl done. Make the sections only as long as
you can and still get it together before it dries. It
helps to mask off the areas you want to keep clean
around the silicon, of course. Cling wrap works for
that too. Masking tape can absorbe and become glued
down too easily IMHO.
This should work for door seals and cowl to windscreen
seals too, since that was your origional problem. I
say "should work" since I haven't done it yet on my
plane. Only on other things. So far, when washing
it, the leaks have been small, but I need to get to
them too. So in theory, it works on KitFox's.....

I'd like to add some comments to the SkyStar beating that's been going on. I've
been dealing with these people since '93 and continue to deal with them for
the occasional part and advice. I've never had any of the problems people are
complaining about nor have I found them to be un- or non- communicative. It
has been rare in my experience to find a company so focused on trying to get it
right and nearly always succeeding.

Sounds like a good idea, Bill. However, I think I'll go for Kurt's solution.

Yes, I think this is a good idea, Kurt. I'll go for your beloved "cling wrap"
stuff. (I didn't know you were that kind of fetishist! :-)
A simple way to smooth silicon is a finger dipped in soapy water, though. But I
don't want my finger between the cowling and the windshield! :-)
Cheers,

I too have suffered the "We'll Get it to you right away" Skystar Blues
I have a model 3 I wanted to put a 912 in , the previous owner had installed
a 582.The motor mount came with the oil tank flanges welded in backwards. I
sent them pictures and they said it would be 4 months befor they could send
another, but I could'nt return it because I Painted it! How Stupid is that ? I
did'nt weld it wrong .but they said thats the policy they have.I'm lucky in the
fact that I have a TIG welder and Know how to use it.
It took me about 4 hours to make the tank brackets and weld them in correctly
That was the first experience with them . I ordered a complete right wing
minus the aileron it took alot of cursing and alot of phone calls and 6 months
to
get that, but the real kicker was that I found out when one of the employees
let it slip that for Model 1,2,and3
Skystar has not manufactured any new parts . Wing ribs and attachments are
left over from when Denney owned it
if you want a 912 mount for a Model 3 they send you one from the model 4
in other words they Had All The Parts !!!!!!!!! and still took me 6 months to
get them!!!!!!!
I'm not sure who he was but I do know that another gentelman that is or was a
member of this group had a class action suit against Skystar for his Vixen
that he had been waiting 3 or 4 years for parts so if I were you I would GET A
LAWYER and send a Letter of Intent, file with the better Buss.,
The ICC and if your check was sent through the mail , file fraud with the US
Postal service
I know all you guys out there think this is extreme but actions speak louder
than words
if skystar see's you mean business maybe they"ll get off their Ass and give
you what you Pay'd for if not you already have the "Ball" rolling. I bought a
Challenger From Quad city Aircraft about 6 Years ago. I ordered it in May and
they required a 50% deposit which I sent.I got a call 3 days later from the
factory with the production date and the shipping date. The kit arrived the 1st
week of july just like they said it would with a complete inventory. Get a
Lawyer to send them a letter and as a precaution file with the BBB the ICC and
the

Yes Michel,
The velcro loop idea works for bigger gaps, but the
silicon and cling wrap idea works for exact fit of
tight gaps. It forms to fit. Depends upon which you
have.
My fetish is that I like a tight fit. We could get
into all kinds of trouble here. Since you are
French/Dutch in Norway, you'd start that. :-) But
I'll just say that the finger in soap idea is not the
same fit as what you intend to put there.
Check that the silicon solvent doesn't harm either
surface. Some might harm aluminum or plexiglass.

David,
Excellent post from you on your experiences with Skystar. Gee I sure hope
they are listening.
A few guys wrote in with nothing but congrats to SS but they negative are
weighing against Skystar at the moment.
But in all reality there are thousands of SS products already sent out so
at one point it is obvious that all was well.
Now I not so sure. Months to get an engine mount ? Shesssssssh !!!

I would like to reply to this thread also. I do feel for those that are
behind the delivery curve, but I can't frankly see how trashing and
criticizing Skystar publicly helps very much.
It is a fact that SS suffered some severe setbacks in past years including,
but not limited to the hangar accident with the runaway Cessna and 9-11, not
to mention Ed Downs bailout a day before Oshkosh.
As with Bill, I have been a SS customer since 1992. I paid for my kit up
front before delivery. My delivery date was about 3 months after I placed
the order. Maybe some things have changed. My hope is that full strength
will return to SS sooner rather than later, but unless I want to hurt the
company's public image - and I can't think how that could possibly be to my
best interest, I personally will keep any frustrations with them strictly
between them and me.
Sometimes this list actually amazes me. For some who have been here a
while, you might remember that at least one company that has supplied
components to many list members was placed off limits to criticism.
Discussion on these components still come up from time to time and
criticism - at times much deserved - is tactfully eliminated from the
discussion, especially if of an opinionated nature. But let the discussion
center around Skystar - let the fun begin.
Who was it that said:
"This thread gone to the dogs.
whining about this and that.
does anyone actually fly ?"
I am getting really weary of all this. 'Been away for 4 days - didn't miss
the list and miss it even less now.
Sometimes I wonder how many of the most "Skystar" critical list members have
actually been Skystar customers.
Maybe a little longer though.
regards,
Lowell

Michel and the list,
Here is an Aero-news report of an STC for a ram air
intake system on Grumman planes. it gives some idea
of what such a system might do for you if you make one
for your KF.
