Hello Guy,

I think it was after my experience of removing the regulator from the cockpit to
the engine side of the firewall and getting a much better radio signal with
nearly no RFI. I can still recommend it. My regulator never had problems with
engine heat and I see that for the Jabiru, the regulator is in the engine room
as a standard configuration.
> 3. I need to mount a Sigtronics RES-401 intercom control box. Is this box

I would avoid having any radio device near the regulator as it generates itself
a pulse when the magnetos reach above say, 14.2 volts. Before my modification,
I could hear in the headset when the regulator started switching on its pulse.

Yes, yes, and friction.
The spring was adjusted so that, if the handle failed, the spring would keep the
carburettor to half throttle opening.
I use the past tense because I am currently changing my 582 for a Jabiru. Incidently,
the old throttle bellcrank will match the Jabiru throttle's course.
Happy holidays,
Michel

Well I for one am staggered that Frank has come out and offered a full
explanation. As has been already said this takes a lot of guts. However I
hope that those that have been adversly affected by Skystars situation can
now have a bit more faith in them coming good. I'm sure this will be the
case while Skystar remains open and up front. I feel that having made an
explanation to the list we might all now try harder to support them. I think
they just earn't that. Dare I say it but of course Skystar must do the right
thing in return. Anyway lets hope all works out well for all concerned and a
Merry Christmas to everyone.

A Classic IV owner told me his NSI Subaru is too heavy for his plane. He said he
flies about 150 lbs over gross whenever he has a 200 lb adult with him. Empty
weight is about 830 according to memory.
Is this a common practice?
Is the Subaru on the heavy side for a good flying Classic?
Thanks!

For the -4 the NSI is a bit on the heavy side....Mine was 801 lbs empty...I
was often over gross....My -5 is a much better fit for the NSI engines...

I have a Classic IV with the NSI. All his facts are correct. The aircraft
is a wonderfully flying aircraft and a very functional long distance
cruiser, but it is over the 1200 lb gross when flying with a passenger.

Michel, thanks so much for the useful response. With the throttle bellcrank
where it was supplied by Kitfox, and the cables routed forward under the
horizontal frame tube, there's very little clearance between the throttle
cables and the brakes, so that to apply the brakes I have to run my toes
against the cables. Is that your experience? Or did you route the cables
elsewhere?
Thanks again and Happy Holidays,
Guy

still don't want to fail one or your stuck with the task of persueing a
special issuance in order to get back on the Sport Pilot band wagon.

Hi all!
I'm building a IV with a 582. Are people using the stock throttle
bellcrank? Or have you moved it? If stock, are your cables going through
the firewall above the horizontal tube or below? Do you use a spring to
offset the Bing carb springs? Do you use a friction or vernier throttle?
I'm thinking I want to switch from the vernier to a friction and then put a
spring on the throttle bellcrank so the throttle wants to stay where you
put it.
Thanks,
Guy Buchanan

Guy,
I routed my cables where they naturally wanted to go and yes, my toe
rubbed the cables. On my first taxi, I actually pushed one of the cables out of
the cluster with my right toe. To fix the situation, I fabricated a 90 degree
toe guard that mounted on top of the right pedal. This will keep my toe from
pushing up too high and contacting the cables. BTW, I only wear a size 7 1/2
or 8 shoe. I bet people with size 12 have a real problem.

Guy,
On the 582, I prefer the vernier type throttle since the 2 stroke sometimes
takes very small inputs and twisting seems to work well for those small inputs.
As far as the springs go, the throttle is hard to push when the engine is
NOT running. With the engine running, a lot of the push/pull friction goes
away. Has something to do with the air rushing through the intake. Don't know
if
this is what you were referring to in your question.

Ben:
I don't know if this is a "common practice" or not, but my Model IV 1200
with the NSI EA 81 at an empty weight of about 820 pounds is functionally a
single-seater when I have full fuel on board. In my opinion, the setup is
too heavy for the plane. I had to add a 5 pound weight to the tail-wheel in
order to get the nose up sufficiently for a decent 3-point landing. I
suppose the engine is OK in a Model V or above with the additional gross
weight, but if I were going to put an engine in a Model IV 1200 I would
certainly use a lighter setup, eg the Rotax 912S or perhaps the Jabiru 2200.
Apparently several members of the group are using the 582 with performance
as good as or better than I'm getting with the Subaru. I would like very
much to go to a cockpit adjustable prop in place of my current Warp drive,
but I simply cannot stand an extra 10 pounds on the nose of my plane. I
guess the bottom line is, if you're comfortable with a 2-stroker, go with a
582. If not, then consider the Jabiru 2200 or a Rotax 912 model. There
are, no doubt, others in the group who will disagree with me. I'm very
interested in hearing what they have to say.

It coming up to Christmas again (we celebrate tonight), and once again I am
thinking about how much enjoyment I get from this little list of ours. The
first thing I have done almost every morning for 8 years is make a coffee
and then log onto this list. We have a wonderful thing going for us here.
Don and Darrel (Deke), thank you again for the absolutely outstanding job
you both do managing this list. You guys are each a class act and we are
lucky to have you.
Thank you all, and may you all have a truly wonderful Christmas. If any of
you are celebrating alone, a very special and personal wish for a wonderful
Christmas to you.

I know exactly what you mean, Guy, because, as I am installing the throttle
cable of the Jabiru at this moment, I have the same problem.
The twin throttle cables that was on my 582, were going through the firewall
above the sloped part of the firewall, well above what your feet can reach. But
the Jabiru single throttle cable is thicker and doesn't bend as easily and I am
now considering making a new hole, lower than the previous one. My concern is
also: will it get in my feet when I fly? I don't want to take that chance. It
looks like it could work (the cable move which somewhat a resistance, but not
too much) with the present hole. I think I'll do my first test flights like
this and change if it feels too stiff later on.
Cheers,
Michel

Thank you all for the thank you-s! It is a pleasure to be helping with the
list, but without the 400 or so of you members, it would be a pretty lonely
job. Everyone contributes to the list.
But in your thanks, don't forget that Matt Dralle is making the bandwidth
available for us. He does a LOT to make sure we all get our messages with
our morning coffee.
Happy Holidays everyone.

Steve, thanks much for the kind words. That's what keeps us going and makes
it all worth while.
Everybody have a great holiday season and like Steve says, keep making that
cup of coffee and logging on. Every day is a new adventure and I'm
completely addicted to it.

Thanks again Don. This is interesting. Since the spring is probably easy to
attach I'll wait until I'm operational to try it. Otherwise it sounds like
I'll end up with much too large of a spring.

Thanks Michel. I'm thinking this is the safe way to go. I'm glad to hear
someone did it and didn't feel like they had too much resistance in at
least the twin throttle. I've got three cables so I guess I'll have 50%
more resistance, but it sounds like it's worth a try. Anyway, I don't like
the thought of flying a tail-dragger where your toes can get hung up just
when you need some rudder or brake. (I.e. on the rollout.)

Yep. I've got 10 1/2 and I have a little problem. However I do like the
idea of guarding the cables. Maybe I'll put a permanent guard around them.
Thanks Don. Have a very merry Christmas!
