Guy,
The 582/Bing 54 carb slides will "fail shut" in case of a cable break. I
often considered some fail safe method in case this were to happen but never
got around to it. Consider what can break? My biggest concern was the "bug
nut" coming loose and allowing the throttle cluster to slam shut. This would
not be a good thing in flight. I guess the other thing is the throttle wire
breaking. Not too likely. To override either of these two things, you could
attach a small cable to the cluster which would allow you to pull (emergency
only) and open the carbs. On the other hand, I think what is more likely to fail
is one of the cables going to the carbs themselves. If one of those breaks,
a bypass cable to the cluster would do no good.
I think one weak spot might be the ball on the end of the carb cable
(under the slide). For this, I made sure that when I hit full throttle, the
vernier would bottom out at the instrument panel "just" before the throttle slide
hit the top of the carb. This put the shock at the vernier rather than on the
ball of the cable.
Just my thought

My model II was a bit of a problem in that my size 10s would occasionally
cause the cable end to pop out of the seat. I solved the problem by doing
two things. First I safetied the cables into the bell crank so nothing
could cause them to pop out. Second I always kept a set of moose hide
slippers in the airplane and that's what I flew with. Better feel of the
pedals and they took up less room. It's gotta be moose hide though. Pig
skin, cow or deer hide just won't do. :-) My S5 is no problem. Lots of
room.
Merry Christmas everybody.

That's interesting, Guy. The crankbell and retaining fitting has three slots
for three cables. On my plane, only two, for the two carb throttle wires, were
used. What is the third one for then?

Merry Christmas to all,
Thank you Don for always thinking of safety and of
others. You are a good example of the people here on
this list who make the list work and our lives better.
As for throttle cables, yes they can break and the
ball end is one place that does, in my experience.
I flew C-130's in the Marines. Our throttle cables
ran in a loop out to the engine and back to the
throttle. When a throttle cable would break, there
were tensioner springs that pulled the remaining cable
the other way. You could get full throttle at the
engine and closed throttle in the cockpit, which was
bad enough. But if the other cable broke, you could
get full reverse at the engine and suddenly be a 4
engine frisby. Never good.
The KitFox gives us a better chance of survival.
I know that whenever I write of the large planes I fly
and where I go, some may feel badly and wonder why any
of us 767, U-2, jet jocks, or test pilot types fly
KitFox's, and why we are on this list. My best answer
is that it is like asking your city's mayor why he has
a wife.... It is for love.
Kurt S. KitFox pilot, proud and thankful of it!

Thanks Michel! I thought I'd take the opportunity to share with the
list what I got for Christmas.
Last Tuesday, during a short, out-patient operation, my doctor
removed the external fixators that had been supporting my broken legs
since the evening of the accident. They put tibia fracture braces on
both legs, which are snug-fitting, molded plastic pieces that fit
something like a cast. They allow more mobility and are removable.
The Christmas present is that last night, for the first time since
the accident, I was able to sleep on my side! Yea! :-)
The doctors expected that my left leg was not setting up yet, but
during the surgery they discovered that not only was it set, but it
was quite solid. They are now thinking that I may not need a planned
surgery in January to insert rods and plates afterall!
Happy holidays to all.

Mike,
Thank you for updating us on your healing status! I am glad to hear your leg
bone is set more than you expected, I bet that is a nice Christmas present
for you. By this time next year, you will be jogging from your house to the
airport, right?
Also, what is the status of the crashed 'fox? Did you save it for parts,
sell it, what?

I think you're wrong old buddy. The third slot is absolutely for the oil
injection. That's what tunes the oil injection system to a specific throttle
setting. The choke is a separate cable next to the throttle.

I use the vernier type throttle on Tootie Mae. I like it because it
works smoothly and doesn't slip and it can be used to easily make fine
adjustments as needed. For routine use I just grab it with the thumb
depressing the center release and use it just like a friction unit, just
as easily, just as fast with the bonus that once I release the thumb it
never slips and I never have too much or too little friction
adjustment. I really do not understand why you would want to change for
a friction type. My two cents.

Yeah, man! Cool! :-) Isn't if funny, Mike, all these things we take for granted
in life? Once we are depraved from them, we do terribly miss them.
Good to hear you won't need another operation. Without metal in your legs you
won't have that interesting piece of conversation as you pass metal-detector
security at airports, though! :-)
