I am a bit confused about whether carb icing is a significant issue with the 912
UL. I do not have carb heat and having looked at 7 other Kitfoxes with 912's,
none of them had carb heat.
Is the 912 immune to carb icing or are most of us just accepting the risk?

I recently bought a flying kitfox 4 with a rotax 582. I want to put the A/C on
amphib floats, and the 582 doesn't have the horses. It seems to me that the
Jabiru engine is the most cost effective for greater hp. Can The Jabiru 3300
be put in a kitfox 4, or is the 2200 a better option. I would like to sell or
trade my present engine. What could I expect to get for the 582 firewall forward
with a GSC prop, presently 35 hours on the engine. I also would appreciate
other suggestions for engine alternatives. Thanks, Ron

Jimmie,
I'm pretty sure the only foxes known to ice (with the
912) have been those that have the carb heat
installation. Common belief is that pulling the
warmer air from the back of the cowl is better than
pulling the cold air from the front with the carb
heat setup.
If someone out there has ever had their 912 ice, let
us know...
Thanks,
Ted

My 912UL seems prone to ice when the engine rpm is brought up before a
complete warm up. During the Wisconsin winter months I regularly use the
carb heat on take off. I have had to use it on that occasional cross
country when the temp/dew point are just right also.
I'm running a single K&N tapered air cleaner with a 3" opening and the
carb hose connections are 2 1/2".
I have been told that if I remove all the hoses and run separate air cleaners
the problem will go away but I haven't tried that yet.

Jimmie, As the two previous posts have indicated, those with the standard
early 1990's induction system - single filter with heat box and front cowl
air pick-up will experience carb icing from time to time. Those that have
bitten the bullet and removed the induction system and gone to two carb
mounted filters do not. there was some discussion a few years ago from
some of the Alaska trip crew that they got a sort of burp or momentary
cough to the engine that they thought might have been an icing problem. It
didn't seem to cause a drop in power - RPM as carb ice typically does,
though.
I haven't had the carb heat system in my IV since day one and have had no
problems that I could attribute to carb ice (670 hours). My feeling is that
more than 90% of Kitfoxes have no carb heat system and if it were a problem,
we would have heard of it by now.

My plane has two air cleaners, but they are only about 3" diameter. Most
Kitfox airplanes that I have seen use much larger diameter air cleaners.
Does anyone know if the size of the air cleaner matters in terms of carb
icing.

My opinion is that it shouldn't Jimmie. I ran the
small filters for a few yrs then went to the larger
pancake filters just to ease intake flow. Couldn't
really tell a difference in performance.

when I went to the large pancake filter and removed the Carb heat option I realized
about a 300 rpm increase. A couple of caveats: I cruise at 5200-5400 as
recommended by Eric Tucker. I am sure that cruising at a lower speed would result
in a lesser increase (less sucking going on). Going from the "pucks" to the
"pancakes" would not generate as big a boost either. I guess one could measure
surface area and make some guess as to the effect,

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: kitfox@simnet.is
Hello people and happy new year.
I recantly broke the tailwheel "leaf spring" on me Kitfox II(#220). It was the
original one, a single blade (1,25"wide)and the wheel is an original solid Maule
rubber wheel.
I borrowed a spring from a KF III that is curently beeing rebuilt. It is a two
blade spring but to put it on my KF II I need to modify the fastening system for
the spring.
I have contacted Skystar and they say that both these spring types are obsolete
and they have designed a new three pice spring, costs 125 usd. I am now waiting
for them to send me a picture of this new spring.
What is your experience, wich kind of tailwheel spring is best for the KF II ?

Are you sure this is aluminium. Mine are chromed steel and this has come up
before and it turned out they were steel. By the way mine at any rate are
made by Douglas, they still have the stickers on them. Bad design places the
valve inline with a stud.

Hey kitfox@simnet.is ,
We have spring shops in my town where you can take in your old broken spring and
they will make you a new one for much less than 125 bucks. If you tell them
you want a 3-leaf setup, they will do that, too. Just don't tell them it's for
a plane! (Off road vehicle is usually safe-which it is!).
Here is something one of our Acroduster Too guys is trying:

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: kitfox@simnet.is
Hello people and happy new year.
I recantly broke the tailwheel "leaf spring" on me Kitfox II(#220). It was the
original one, a single blade (1,25"wide)and the wheel is an original solid
Maule rubber wheel.
I borrowed a spring from a KF III that is curently beeing rebuilt. It is a two
blade spring but to put it on my KF II I need to modify the fastening system
for the spring.
I have contacted Skystar and they say that both these spring types are obsolete
and they have designed a new three pice spring, costs 125 usd. I am now waiting
for them to send me a picture of this new spring.
What is your experience, wich kind of tailwheel spring is best for the KF II
?

Ron:
A friend switched his Avid Mark IV over to a Jabiru after flying on a 582
for years. He too wanted to go to floats, although just straight
(non-amphib) type. He liked the Jabiru for it's fuel economy, smoothness,
and reliability. The first year he operated on wheels. But the second year
when he put it on floats he was disappointed with the performance. Even
solo in that light Avid airframe (530 lbs on wheels if I remember correctly)
it was underpowered. He crashed the airplane shortly after it was put on
floats in an accident that happened from hitting large waves after not being
able to lift off in a reasonable distance. It was his opinion that the
engine just doesn't develop enough thrust for what a seaplane needs (a
seaplane needs all the thrust as you can get). Consequently large diameter
props are typically required. The Jab spins too many rpm's to turn a long
propellor efficiently. Possibly the larger Jabiru might work better, but I
believe it also runs higher rpms without aid of a gearbox (??). So that one
I'm not sure about. But if it were me I'd go with the sure thing for a
Model IV amphib, the 100 hp 912 Rotax. And if your floats and airframe are
light, even that 582 will work ok. I've flown lots of Avids and Kitfoxes on
straight floats with 532-582 engines. They are great performers off the
water with that engine, so they will still be ok as an amphib I'm sure. But
that 912s will put you in the Supercub class.
But....this is just my opinion after flying Avids and Kitfoxes for 1200+
hours, mostly on floats...

Hi All
As I go through the details of my Classic IV w/ NSI clean-up. I would like
to explore the area of engine coatings.
The orange paint that is on the NSI engine is pealing in a few spots and as
I am a bit of a stickler for the details I would like to recoat the engine
The idea of painting an engine block, cylinders, heads in the automotive and
motorcyle worlds is full of opinions. Painting, powder coating, ceramic
coatings, plating...
What is your opinion????
The spectum is wide. From a rattle can of engine paint from AutoZone to
sending it out for ceramic coating.
Some say the color should be flat black and will aid in the heat disipation.
I have been researching online for the afternoon, but would like some
opinions.
Thanks

I'm using an EA81 in my Nieuport. I decided to go
with uncoated block and heads and I powder coated the
valve covers and oil pan. Here's a pic
http://www.foxflier.com/nieuport/2004/Jan/P1260004.jpg
BTW, the engine has been run and has been setting now
for a couple of yrs while finishing the plane. The
uncoated block ages well.
EasyOff oven cleaner will clean up the block & heads
nicely -- just don't get it on the aluminum pistons
or internal stuff! If you want to paint the block
and heads, a good two part automotive paint looks
good and lasts longer than the one-part 'engine'
paints.

Ted

As I am half way between a 582 and a Jabiru, and reading much on the Jabiru
list, your opinion seems right on the spot, Paul! I think I will love my Jabiru
but I don't think it is the engine for a amphibian model 4. At least, not the
Jab 2200.

I have 2 questions.
Don't the vents under the wing tend to siphon fuel out when the tanks
are full?
Why does cutting the tubes at an angle enhance the ram air function?

Rex, I think it's unlikely you have original equipment wheels. The 8 inch
wheels were all aluminum as far as I know. Then again, I might be wrong
about this as some steel units may have been supplied. Mine were definitely
aluminum though supplied by Denny.

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: dralle@matronics.com (Matt Dralle)
Dear Listers,
Tonight, Friday 1/7/2005 at 7pm PDT, I will be working with my Internet
Service Provider to upgrade to a larger IP subnet. I will be
re-addressing all of the machines on the network including the
Matronics Web Server and Matronics Email Server at that time. Name
Service will be updated at that time as well and most things should
work again pretty quick. There may be some bounced email for a few hours
or even a day or so as the new name-to-ip-address resolutions propagate
into the depths of the Internet.
If you have problems posting a message to one of the Lists or get a
bounced message back, please wait a couple of hours and try sending it
again. Generally, access to the web site should work within 1-hour of
the update or around 8pm PDT.
Hopefully the transition will go smoothly and you'll hardly even
notice! :-)
Thanks for your patience!

Only a couple of problems that I can . First of all you dont need an STC
(supplemental type certificate) for an experimental as we have no type
certificate to supplement. Second of all if you deregister your aircraft
and the re register it with the new weight limit you want you should not
have any problems. just a lot of work and ofcourse a new 40 hour test time.

Lowell,
This one suprised me too. When this FAA rep/member
told our club how to do it, I specifically asked him
pointed home-built questions after the meeting. It
seems that he is prepared now to clear the way for the
club to STC a manufactured plane. But this is not the
FAA rep that signed my KitFox off and I don't know him
well enough to say it is written in stone.
I would like to see a home-built STC'd to Sport Flight
status before I totally believe it. But I throw this
out to you all as a subject anyone can address with
their FAA rep and see if it sells.

I don't think you can beat powder coating for engine paint. They have some
amazing hi-tech coatings now in any color you want. You can even get your
pipes ceramic coated. The heat of the engine will not come close to even
bothering it.
Didn't we have a powder coating vendor on the list? Are you still here? He
had some coatings that claimed to dissipate heat faster than an uncoated
block.

OK! Lets hold our horses right there. I fly an Avid with a Jabiru 2200.
While I do not fly with floats...I have NO DOUBT that the engine delivers
sufficient power to handle them. My previous engine was a 670 RAVE. The Jab
produces equal to better performance than the Rotax "winder-upper" at about
3.5 gallons per hour. Now wait a minute! Which 2200 did you friend have? Was
it the one with the bigger cam and steel rods? Or was it an early 65 horse
version? I bought a prince prop from a guy who flys an older version Jabiru.
His engine would NOT turn that prop any faster than 3300 rpm. I put the prop
on my engine and I see 3760 on CLIMB OUT for crying out loud!. And what this
milarky about prop diameter? Check the charts friends. Max RPM on the Jab is
3300 rpm, hell; a 68" prop is still only 85% of supersonic! Both the 2200
and the 3300 run the same max RPM: 3300 and yes, there is no
gearbox...neither does a Lycoming or Continental!!!:)
