Randy, Don and Paul,
That's alright guys. If you knew what I looked like,
you would know this is not bad ribbing. ;-) Ha ha
I get no respect!
Torgier's references are really good and talk about
many of the issues dealing with exhausts, if you are
interested.
Because most people aren't interested, a lot of power
is wasted here. At least some research (by the EAA)
is done on the subject now though. Still a lot more
power is available there that is not used simply
because no one bothers. We use less than 25% of our
power and throw the rest away.
My main point is that you can gain 100% jet lift from
the exhaust by pointing it straight down. Or you can
gain 100% jet thrust by pointing the exhaust aft. But
due to vector math, you can get 70% lift plus 70%
thrust pointing the exhaust at a 45 degree angle.
That means you get 140% value from it, not 100%. 40%
more benefit just from the angle. Its true.
It does reduce the benefit by bending the pipes or
adding an elbow due to fluid dynamics. But look at
most exhausts. They are full of bends. But the
closer you can come to a straight pipe aimed down and
aft at 45 degrees, the better in most cases.
There has been more research into nozzle designs since
the vectored thrust research planes have come out.
But still little is done with it at the small plane
level. Tip cutting is simple, but not so efficient as
point the pipe where you want it.
Making a nozzel that takes advantage of supersonic
pulses might be another area of study. This is an
expanding port that keeps the flow fast, but increases
the area over which the pressure of the pulse is felt.
I am too tired to go into it now. Sorry, but it does
have to do with rocket exhaust patterns and the
ability to maintain a supersonic pressure over an
expanded area thereby increasing the thrust.
Then there is the ability to use the exhaust to
extract cooling air from the cowl (or from the
radiator). Some Bonanzas and the T-34 have such
exhaust augmentors.
Randy, I posted the story about the free piston engine
with the water injection used to power the go-cart.
It is an old Popular Science article that I had and
lost due to the 97 flood here. If you are interested,
contact me off list and I'll pass on what I know. it
was a neat experiment.

Well Kurt, now I'm really worried. I have finished all the mods on my
plane. My new exhaust pipe ended up (by accident) pointing down and aft at
about a 45 degree angle. It's not sticking too far out of the plane. I cut some
of the existing exhaust pipe off and found a bent oversized extension at the
auto store. Necked it down a bit and had it welded over the existing pipe by a
Nuclear Pipe Welder friend. Excellent work. I did not slant cut the tip
"yet" due to the close proximity of the new bottom rad cowl. According to your
report, leaving as is might be the best.
My real fear now is to fly the airplane and have all the fabric blow off
due to the new gained thrust. Hee Hee (couldn't help myself)
My BFR is expired and I can't legally test flight the plane. Not to
mention, I have made major mods and need to test solo. I think my CFI buddy is
going with me anyway and act as Crew/CFI/BFR signoff.

Speaking of water injection, does anyone recall the drag racer at the
Nationals in Indianapolis in the early '60's I believe, that was going
pretty fast during qualifications, and subsequent inspections revealed
he had a water injection system aboard. Officials decided that this
broke a rule that stipulated "automotive pump fuel only", and made him
remove the system. He proceeded to go faster without it...and ended up
winning the Nationals that year. The first name Pete seems to come to
mind, but I'm not sure. It was a small block Chevy, and he kicked butt
on all the big Hemi's that year, which p___ed me off, 'cause I was
running a Hemi in my local drag roadster, and hated those
"johnny-come-lately" modern, high-revving, new-fangled,
I-can't-afford-them-so-they-must-be-no-good engines.

There was a lot of talk on one of the lists a few years ago
(I think it was on Airsoob)about using the exhaust to draw
vacuum. The concept was slightly different however. It
consisted of putting a tube tap into the exhaust, kind of
like you would a probe, and the right location and geometry
of the tip would result in vacuum due to the high-speed
exhaust gases exerting a pull on air in the now tapped in
tube. I believe there was also a need for a reed valve in
the line. I remember a couple of members trying it out and
having some success, although it was pointed out that you
would not want to have any exhaust gases come up your tube
and due damage to your instruments (since the exhaust gases
might be corrossive).

Never, Don. But I am amazed by the ingenuity of this list. Isn't it fun to discuss
and experiment? Incidentally, the most exotic use of exhaust fumes I have
heard of is in WIG (Wing In Ground) construction, where underwinged and underpowered
"flying boats" need to overcome the substential drag of the water. One
guy did it by having the exhaust pipe in the step of the hull. Apparently it helps
considerably the ventilation of the water aft of the step and decreases the
time needed to get airborne as the water "sticks" less if ventilated.
Cheers,
Michel

Greetings Matt!
I need your help, please! I just re-joined your very cool Kitfox List again
recently. I was getting a bit overwhelmed at the number of incoming e-mails
from the List. I went in and clicked a button on your subscription form,
thinking that I could just get sent the "Digest Version" or condensed

the Kitfox List Digest version, but, I now seem to be subscribed to every
builders list that you have. Today I got 190 e-mails!!! Help!!! I am on a
dial-up modem here and I don't want 200 e-mails a day!!! Can you please undo
whatever I did. Can you also tell me how I can just get the condensed

I will just un-subscribe and re-register.

Dear Listers,
Tonight, Friday 1/7/2005 at 7pm PDT, I will be working with my Internet
Service Provider to upgrade to a larger IP subnet. I will be
re-addressing all of the machines on the network including the
Matronics Web Server and Matronics Email Server at that time. Name
Service will be updated at that time as well and most things should
work again pretty quick. There may be some bounced email for a few hours
or even a day or so as the new name-to-ip-address resolutions propagate
into the depths of the Internet.
If you have problems posting a message to one of the Lists or get a
bounced message back, please wait a couple of hours and try sending it
again. Generally, access to the web site should work within 1-hour of
the update or around 8pm PDT.
Hopefully the transition will go smoothly and you'll hardly even
notice! :-)
Thanks for your patience!

Not quite Kitfox related, but aviation related..
We just got back from a vacation in Hawaii where we took a helicopter flight
around the island of Kauai where they filmed movies such as King Kong and
Jurassic Park. People...never in my life have I ever had such a spectacular
45 minute flight. Absolutely breathtaking. The scenery and geology is so
different and so spectacular it makes you cry.
Just imagine combining the most jagged and rugged volcanic mountain geology,
with the wettest place on the planet and you get the idea. Everything
covered in lush green, with waterfalls sprouting out of the sides of
mountains all over the place, valleys and cliffs like the Grand Canyon, and
not a road, building, or person in sight...
The culmination was when he slowly took the helicopter through a winding
chasm, around a bend... to a sheer cliff wall...and then he slowly turned
the helicopter 360 degrees and you realize you are deep inside the actual
lava pipe of the volcano, rising up a few thousand feet up, all covered in
green, with water flowing everywhere.
People...this flight is so spectacular, I would consider a trip to Hawaii
just for the flight alone. Don't miss it before your done with this life.
Just make sure you wait for a clear day.

Our family did a helicopter flight on the big Island. Yes it was quite a
beautiful experience. Flying into 1000' sheer canyon walls with
waterfalls all around you, wow.
Our flight included a on board movie( that we could purchase of course)
of the flight and also of the cabin. I was in front, to busy looking out
to notice that my wife and 2 daughters had a huge sick look on there
face, until I saw them on tape. Apparently soon after the 360,s in the
canyon they got a little motion sick. Then the pilot
went out to circle some humpbacks. They were happy to be back on the
ground!
We opted for the budget flight, did'nt include any volcanos, but was
well worth it!

around the island of Kauai where they filmed movies such as King Kong and
Jurassic Park.
Everything
covered in lush green, with waterfalls sprouting out of the sides of
mountains all over the plac
e, valleys and cliffs like the Grand Canyon, and
not a road, building, or person in sight...

That's alright guys. If you knew what I looked like,
you would know this is not bad ribbing. ;-) Ha ha
I get no respect!
Kurt,
You don't fly with a helmet with Viking horns on it do you?

This reminds me of the thrust advantage used by drag
racers which can be very signifcant since those Top Fuel
engines put out a huge amount of exhaust thrust. (ever see
them run at night?) I remember a TV race commentator
giving a figure for it, but can't remember how much.
It looks like they are at 45 degrees too! They've been
like that for many many years.

Subject: | Jet Thrust and water injection. |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Torgeir Mortensen <torgemor@online.no>
Hi there,
Thanks for the flowers.
Seems to be lot's of interest here, so I'll give this link again-, from
our neighbor list; "The Kolb list".
This guy know his lesson.. And this is Jack Hart.
Start with the first page -then next and so on. Here is lot's of
interesting thing to check out, IMO.
But remember, the Kolb is a "little" different than a Kitfox, but the
theory behind- is just the same!
However, this guy talk about WA injection, - and tried it out !!! And
lot's of more..
http://www.thirdshift.com/jack/firefly/firefly.html
A little more about water injection, since Jacks direct link do not work.
Here is a "paste" from the MSD powersport, below you'll find a link to
their "injector system".
.........................
TWO STROKE WATER INJECTION
How does water injection work? Water is injected into the expansion
chamber at specific rpm levels, this alters the sonic wave in the pipe.
The water molecules directly affect the sonic wave properties, modifying
back pressure deflection. You want the water to be injected at low to mid
range rpms, and to be tapered off before your engine enters your upper rpm
levels (leaving enough water to prevent any rubber couplers from melting).
At 3,000 rpm the MSD Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) Switch turns on the
water, by gently pulsing it on and off, then (at a rpm you preset) it will
flow a steady stream of water. At a user preset rpm, the water starts
pulsating on & off again, as the rpm rise, the volume of water decreases
until the shutoff point is reached. There is no abrupt changes in power
with the MSD PWM Switch...as though you are hitting a pipes' powerband.
With the water gently pulsing on and off, instead of suddenly on and then
suddenly off you avoid the unwanted pipe "power band" effect.
Will it help top end? The primary benefits are low and mid range power
increases. To also gain top end performance you could restrict the water
flow in your pipe's stock cooling system, and use the MSD PWM switch to
not only tune the pipe, but cool it at the same time. This is tricky
because if you restrict the stock water cooling too much, you could melt
the rubber couplers.

Hi Folks,
Thought I should share this little story -cause it happened to my friend
Alfred, the builder of my Kitfox model II.

Oops... maybe I should clarify something...
Around my house, the term bumpkin is a term of endearment...not an insult.
Damn...I should be more careful! ;-)

Steve,
I have found that when the photo posting fails, it is most likely due to a
name that the web server does not like, or a huge sized photo.
Try to avoid putting non-letter/number characters in the photo name. If
there are spaces, @, &, and other odd characters, the web code cannot locate
the photo.

Speaking of photos. Don/Deke...how about setting up a folder in the Kitfox
Sportflight Photo site for pictures of our list members. I would love to
see what the bumpkins I've been listing to for 8 years really look like.
Incidentally, I find posting photos on this site to be hit and miss. I get
a lot of upload failures. Are there any tricks I should know about?

Anyone else going nuts waiting for their kit?
I ordered back in August....paid in full of course. Was told I would likely have
my kit by end of October or mid November. Mid-Nov arrived and I was advised
the spars were backed up for the quick builds and I would be looking at mid-December
or so. After the second week of December came with no mention of what
was happening, I contacted Skystar. I was notified that my kit had been sent
out to somebody else and was told my kit would be ready by the end of Jan or
early Feb. After asking for the tail components so I could get a start on the
thing, on Dec 15, I was assured I would get the tail components soon.
Here it is Jan 13th and no tail components....
Anybody going through this? Quite honestly I have been perplexed. If this were
not essentially the best design in its class for what I am looking for in a
LSA, I would be taking my money elsewhere....oh wait, the money is gone...
Was hoping my building experience would be better and I still have hope. Grew
up in the back of dad's Vari-eze after being a toddler in the back seat as it
sat in the workshop. Dad's on his second now (an RV-7A) and just about to retire.
Was hoping to have a great experience building and flying with dad but so
far, it has gotten off to a rocky start.
Being that I was looking at other designs and re-reading the "no refunds after
14 days" in the contract, are any of you survivors of this similar experience?
My garage is barren except for every tool imaginable for the project. Some
of that extra room came from motorcycles my wife talked me into selling for this
project!
Is there light at the end of the tunnel?
Thanks,
Wade
