If I were to do it over again, I'd skip the water wash also. I was told to
do it by Skystar, but after I'd done it and thought about it, it occurred to
me that the MEK had already done the cleaning job. That stuff is the best
detergent under the sun and doesn't leave much behind, so I agree.
The whole project is pretty messy and will be hard to keep off the wings so
come up with some novel ways of capping things off. I found that during the
cleaning process pressure would build up in the tank so it needs to be
vented somehow. Any input out there on that part?
Have fun and let us know how the project goes.

Probably any of the current sloshes would be fine. Randolph makes one too.
It just needs to be thinnable so you can easily coat the entire inside of
the tank. Probably best is to call the manufacturer, but sometimes it's
prudent to not tell them it's for an airplane.

Hi Bill,
Glenn Horne here. I used the Caswell system (two parts a & b) on
one of my tanks (13 gal.) Model II and it worked great for me.
I would highly recommend it.

Thanks Deke for the heads-up on the pressure build-up.
I was on the Kreem website and they sell a water based product that they
sell for the motorcycle group that is sprayed on the painted surface of the
fuel tank to prevent damage to the paint. I am thinking about that one. It
might be good for a limited area near the filler cap etc.

Deke,
I think you can get a non vented gas cap (auto store) to replace the
original for sloshing purposes. When I did mine, I put a 3' piece of clear
tubing on the tank fuel outlet with a small valve on the end. Everytime I rolled
the wing I would hold the tube high and open the valve for any pressure
buildup. Never did get too much pressure but the same pressure warning was talked
about back then.

From Page(Grand Canyon) you can pretty much follow I-15 north to Brigham

Vic,
From just north of Albuquerque go west to AZ. I would suggest flying
the vfr
corridor over the grand canyon then lake powell then work your way up
to
Caldwell. This is a fabulously beautiful route. You will love it.
Cliff
Hi List, I am back and would like some advice for a cross country to
Skystar headquarters in ID. The route will be from Roswell, NM then NW
toward Albuquerque then on. I would like to know the best (read
safest)
route over the mountains during the winter months.
I would also like to know of some good airports to stop at in line
with
th
e suggested route.
Yhanks,

You know Gary, people have done this for many years.......and gotten
away
with it for awhile. I too used 30W in a Yamaha with oil injection. It
worked
somewhat ok but I fouled plugs whenever I was bucking a headwind and
had
to
add more throttle to maintain a cruise speed. When I added throttle,
it
also
increased the stroke of the oil pump. This combin
ation didn't work out
good
at all... Under a load like that, it got a little warmer but almost
always
fouled one of the plugs. After changing to a GOOD 2 cycle oil (blended
for
the oil injection) the fouled plug scenario went away for good. BTW, I
also
had some fairly carboned up Heads as well as the piston/ring assembly.
Using the straight 30W was handed down to me from my father who was an
avid
outboard boat enthusiast. I always thought he was right on but after a
couple of years, I got it straightened out in my head and had no more
problems. I can't imagine running a good 582 into the ground just
because
someone is using the incorrect oil. I think you could run spreadsheets
a
lot
of different ways and it just won't pencil ou
t......It's not
economically
reasonable.

It's too bad the engine starts at all because he shouldn't be using
motor
oil in substitute for two stroke oil.
RPM's are not getting high enough to produce a spark and then the
engine
floods. The poor oil choice will also foul the plugs and make it
harder to
get a good spark. A bare minimum for the oil should be two stroke oil
designed for oil injection systems.

Subject: | Flaperon problem |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Ronald K. Stevens" <rkstevens@verizon.net>
I've got a problem with one of my flaperons. It's brand new - still
building. Today, I took the plastic wrap off with the intention of
riveting the trailing edges. When I opened the shipping foam blanket
that the flaperons ship in, I noticed that each of the four flaperon
attach brackets on one of my flaperons had dented and cut into the tops
of the flaperon skin. I'm thinking that this happened during
shipping...but these have been in the basement for quite some time (I
didn't really open them up and check 'em out really good when I got
them). The box they came it wasn't damaged at all...And externally
(through the foam anyway) they "looked" fine. It's as if the flaperon
hanger brackets had become scissors and cut into the tops of the
flaperon skin.
But now...I've got a problem. Can these be fixed? I've been trying to
think of a good way to fix em, but haven't come up with a really good
solution yet. I'd like to solder on a piece of aluminum to the inside
skin, but the heat of soldering I think would melt the foam ribs that
are really close to the problem areas. Even considered placing wet rags
over the top of the flaperon skin to ack as heat sinks while I solder,
but I think that the ribs would probably get destroyed causing an even
bigger problem.
Has anybody else had this problem. And if so, how'd you fix it?

Ron,
It sounds like the flaperons were damaged before you received them. I would
call Skystar and ask if you can send the damaged one back for a replacement.
If you did not break it, you should not have to fix it.

Ron, I had to repair three "cuts" in the flapperons.
Discussed the repair with Skystar before doing the
following:
Prepared a small aluminum patch sized to extend
slightly over the edge of the defect. Bonded this with
Hysol (bond prep both sides of the repair as you've
done elsewhere). Smoothed the margins of the repair
and it's barely visible and ready for paint.

Thanks Don,
I do believe that they were most probably damaged in shipping. However,
when I signed for them without "thoroughly inspecting" them, I doubt
that I'll get too much sympathy from the shippers. Heck, I don't even
remember who the shippers were. Could have been UPS...or some other
freight company. Don't remember really. As for the paperwor that came
with them...you should see my desk...they'll never be found.
And, I really doubt it's SkyStars fault and it's probably not fair to
expect them to pay for it. (They are really expensive!) I'm sure when
they left the factory they were both in good shape. SkyStar should
however, put little foam blocks over the hinge brackets as that would
alleviate the possibility of this happening to somebody else.
I really don't want to buy a new one...I've got better use for
$600-$700. And sending mine back would be pretty expensive to. Since,
I don't have the crate anymore, I'd have to go to HomeDepot and buy some
wood...build a crate...pay for shipping from Virginia to Idaho...Oh,
well...you get the idea.
I'm bummed....

Subject: | Jabiru Engine noise |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Steve Cooper" <spdrflyr@earthlink.net>
To Michel and other interested list members,
Thanks guys for the assistance with my noise problem. I spent the later part
of last week in Palm Springs so it was difficult to reply to email at that
time. To the guys on the Jabiruengines list, thanks to Pete and the rest who
responded. I have checked things like muffler springs, exhaust flanges and
the like... and I checked the heat muff attachment to make sure it was tight
after the engine heated up. It doesn't appear that any of those elements are
a cause of the sound. I'm 99% certain that the sound is emanating from
within the engine itself. I'm nearly convinced that the sound I'm hearing is
just a slightly elevated engine noise which is produced by the running
engine. As the engine is heated materials expand due to the heating and
therefore tolerances change. (I HOPE!) Anyway, Michel, if you could, when
you get your running would you please report what you find? Appreciate it.

I like Fred Shiple's idea about glueing little patches on them. .016 would
work fine. Do a tidy job and when painted they wouldn't be noticed. Might
even look like they belong there.
Shouldn't take long.

Without knowing how far the rip is, it should be fairly easy to fix. I would
straighten out the sheetmetal as best as I could. Then glue a patch of thin
gauge alum. over the area. Could do it to all the hinges to match. Other
option is to straighten out the metal and fill it with the gray epoxy and
micro balloons, then sand smooth. No problem. The epoxy would be my first
choice.
Good luck

Vic,
I've only done this once (very long ago, and from San Diego to Colorado &
back) and I was flying a Skylane at the time. I went a bit farther north via
Grand Canyon (fueled here), Four Corners, Farmington NM, Raton NM, Then
Canyon City Co., but I will tell you that 230 hp (& no turbo plus no oxygen)
is marginal in warmer weather. A 182 can sure seem small & insignificant at
such a time! I recommend the more southerly route mentioned by Cliff. And I
recommend cool weather for the trip. And by all means bring enough
film/digital memory for your camera!
This perhaps is painfully obvious to all here, but a WAC chart in the
Rockies does not give enough detail- use sectionals. I would have given my
eye teeth for a GPS if they had existed at the time. But do not forget to be
aware of where you are. And finally, be prepared for weather. This is way
south of the frozen North, but be able to survive in that great expanse of
land just in case. ELT, sleeping bag, etc. By the way, the magnetic
deviation in the Rockies is real. I nearly took the wrong valley because of
this and the lack of detail on the chart. I'd have either been forced to
land in the middle of nowhere or become a statistic had I not figured out
that the towns along the railroad were just too close together. The magnetic
compass was lying to me, and the gyro compass was doing its recession thing
after several hours.
I went in Spring, and the clear air turbulence from the thermals topped out
above my service ceiling. That was one unforgettable ride. The autopilot was
a joke in that kind of chop. Had to keep peeling my clipboard down off the
ceiling. Ground speed at landing and take-off can be breathtaking at Grand
Canyon in warm weather with its high density altitude. If I had to travel
the intermountain region much I'd have O2 and a turbo for sure.
Many on the list have traveled much more than I have, and are probably
grinning at what I'm saying. I was a wide eyed youngster in my mid 20's when
I did this trip. It was a very big deal to me, the adventure of my life at
the time. Many will see all this as merely routine for them. I still think
given the terrain, weather, altitude, and great distances between major
airports & towns, be prepared for anything, including having a marvelous
time seeing the great West.

Don, Don, and David-
I've had no problem going to the address that David posted, but ran
into the "create account" bit when trying to get to the Star-Telegram
from the Google Alert link. I've been following this search story since
the 15th, when the story first came out. I was going to ask this group
if they'd heard anything lately, and then another Google Alert came up.
When I tried to email from their site it boinked me over to the "create
account" page.

TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. - At least 50 people resumed search efforts
Saturday for a Muskogee physician who disappeared more than a week ago
while flying a small plane from Texas.
Five Civil Air Patrol aircraft and four ground search teams are
continuing to search west of McAlester for Dr. Jack Nolen, said Maj.
Charles Newcomb of the Civil Air Patrol.
"We've got a pretty substantial operation going today," Newcomb said
Saturday. "We've got 50 signed in this morning, and I'll bet there's more
than that now."
Nolen, 73, has been missing since Friday, Jan. 14, when he left Paris,
Texas, on a flight to Shawnee in his Kitfox Light Squared airplane.
Search efforts are focused on the heavily wooded area around Gerty in
Hughes County where air traffic radar last picked up a signal.
Nolen retired as medical director at Muskogee Regional Medical Center
last month but still worked there part-time. He also is the medical
director for the Good Shepherd Health Clinic in Muskogee, which provides
medical services to the poor.
Nolen's ex-wife, Susan McColley of Okay, said the family remains
optimistic that Nolen will be found alive and is asking for the
community's prayers.
"That's really the one thing that can be done for him now," McColley
said. "All the people who have been involved in the search, they've just
gone above and beyond. We're just so grateful for all those people."
McColley is the mother of Nolen's two youngest children, Paige, 14, and
Jack Jr., 22.
Nolen also has three sons from another marriage: Matt, 44, of New York;
Tim, 43, of Kingsport, Tenn., and Philip, 33, of Orlando, Fla.
McColley said she doubts Nolen would have flown somewhere else without
notifying friends or family.
"I suppose that's a possibility, but it wouldn't be like him," Nolen
said.
Newcomb said the aircraft Nolen was flying had just refueled in Paris,
giving it a range spanning more than 650,000 square miles.
"We're talking about a range from Des Moines, Iowa, to halfway to Cuba,"
Newcomb said. "That's a huge area, so if we're completely wrong about the
direction he was headed, he could be almost anywhere in the continental
United States.
"But we have pretty solid evidence from the radar track that he was
somewhere in the vicinity of southwest Oklahoma."
Newcomb said as of Friday, searchers had logged nearly 3,000 hours
searching for Nolan, including 230 flying hours.
He also discouraged the public from undertaking search efforts on their
own.
"We don't want to get anyone hurt or lost," he said. "We're also
concerned about private pilots searching in the area. We'd just as soon
not have people we don't know about flying low in areas where we're
flying low."
Anyone with information is urged to call Civil Air Patrol at (405)
348-3711.

Don,
If you don't get your physical you will never be able to fly my Series 6. I won't
even let you ride in it.
