I don't think anyone else has pointed this out, but it's my understanding
that there are two different types of 2-stroke motor oil: some for
water-cooled engines such as marine craft, and others for air-cooled
engines. In my neck of the woods, the preferred oil for Rotax 2-strokers is
Pennzoil 2-stroke for air-cooled engines. Obviously the 582 is
water-cooled. Does that make a difference? I can't answer that. I can
only say that I never had any problem with fouled plugs or otherwise using
it in an oil-injected 582 I had on a Rans S12.
There is water and air cooled Penzoil ...I did asked Lockwood this ... they
have done some extensive testing they recommennd air cooled only in 582
AND do not mix the two. If you have a injection, empty empty tank and use
only air. That goes for the small tank as well.
Lockwood Aviation in Lakeland Fla is a supurb source for Rotax service and
stuff....

Ronald,
What ever course of action you choose, I would recommend that you begin
with stop drilling the end of the cut/tear. Then you can patch over it or
fill it as has been recommended. I know of one builder near me that decided
to simply enlarge the existing opening of the hinge area so that it could
not happen again. That was recommended by the DAR that inspected his plane.
Good luck.

I've got a problem with one of my flaperons. It's brand new - still
building. Today, I took the plastic wrap off with the intention of
riveting the trailing edges. When I opened the shipping foam blanket
that the flaperons ship in, I noticed that each of the four flaperon
attach brackets on one of my flaperons had dented and cut into the tops
of the flaperon skin. I'm thinking that this happened during
shipping...but these have been in the basement for quite some time (I
didn't really open them up and check 'em out really good when I got
them). The box they came it wasn't damaged at all...And externally
(through the foam anyway) they "looked" fine. It's as if the flaperon
hanger brackets had become scissors and cut into the tops of the
flaperon skin.
But now...I've got a problem. Can these be fixed? I've been trying to
think of a good way to fix em, but haven't come up with a really good
solution yet. I'd like to solder on a piece of aluminum to the inside
skin, but the heat of soldering I think would melt the foam ribs that
are really close to the problem areas. Even considered placing wet rags
over the top of the flaperon skin to ack as heat sinks while I solder,
but I think that the ribs would probably get destroyed causing an even
bigger problem.
Has anybody else had this problem. And if so, how'd you fix it?

I would never get in a plane with him. Looking at his plane and the work he does
convinced me that I have the skills to build an experimental. He has wrecked
his plane several times and walked away each time. He has a bent left wing from
several of the wrecks and each time puts a log on top of the bend to the hanger
roof and takes a handyman jack to the tip and straightens it back out. He
has two spark plug wires taped together and was soldering the coil wire yesterday.
He flew his plane the first time without a WB and never did any ground
work. When he took off the plane was rigged incorrectly and almost nosed over
and wrecked. He finally got it back around and on the ground. Anyway enough about
this, thanks again for you comments.
Went up yesterday several times and it was great flying, saw a lots of elk.

Im sorry your buddy or friend is a complete idiot . to use auto oil in 2
stroke and fly is one of the reason these engines cost so much and many
manufacturers have stopped building them due to stupidity and then crashes
and then lawsuits which the great justice system in America seems to side
with the idiots then .
If he was my friend i would highly suggest to stop using auto oil or not be
my friend anymore . stupidity seems contagious these days . The engine needs
a complete overhaul period. and then use the proper oil .
Just my thoughts and only mine

Hi Dee,
Well, we run into the attitude your "friend" has from time to time.
It is usually followed by the "All they want is to gouge me", "These stupid
two-strokes, why can't the manufacturer get it right" etc. attitude. They
belong to the .001% category of all fliers, but I bet they represent a much
larger percentage of accident victims.
When we are filling in a work order that owner will invariably state that
they were following Rotax's recommendations to the letter so it must be a
crappy design......go figure...
I guess this post in not to slight your friend, but to give kudos to all
those who responded to your post trying to prevent him from having a future
problem.
As a Rotax Service Center owner, I tend to see way too many of the "problem
engines""...We tend to forget about those of you who are merrily plugging
away, following recommendations, doing regular service and not having
problems. To those guys and gals (the other 99.999% of owners) I give a
hearty " high five".... To those that think we are full of S--T, well you
should really think about the old FRAM commercial... "You can pay me now
or.............."
Have a great day guys

Andy,
Thanks. Actually, the first (well second, if you could the screaming
part) thing I did was to drill some very small holes at the end of the
tear to alleviate the stresses so that it shouldn't tear any further.
The consensus so far seems to be leaning towards bonding an aluminum
backing strip onto the inside of the flaperon (If I can reach...kinda'
like building a ship in a bottle I guess). Then, I plan on using some
SuperFil on the outside to fill in the dents. My only worry is that the
air loads and flexing in flight might tend to make the SuperFil come off.

Went flying yesterday in clear calm beautiful weather. The grass was
brilliant green and the rolling hills were picture perfect. I was chasing
around a friend who was excited about using his new 26 inch tires for off
field landings. We had just watched a video about off-field landing in
Alaska so we wanted to practice technique. He found a lovely cow pasture in
a valley on the side of the mountains, so after buzzing the cows off to the
side I followed him in. Of course we had picked a one way in and out field
and had not walked the field before landing. He landed his Citabria without
any problem and I followed him in. It was even easier than expected. After
carefully parking our planes across the hill to prevent them from rolling
back down without us, we got out and were congratulating each other on the
landing.
After a minute or two the smell of gas became pervasive....and sure enough
my left tank was venting a solid stream of gas onto the top of the wing.
Just a reminder to be careful when parking on hillsides.
It was so nice that I uploaded a picture to Sportflight at Fly-ins Airshows
under the name Cow Pasture. And yes, I did think about all you snowbound
pilots, but not for long, had to do more flying.

Ron,
I thought the recommended fix was to bond the alum on the outside??? How
do you plan to get inside the flaperon to do the bonding. Agree, inside
sounds better and would be more pleasing to the eye but opening the flaperon????
I might be missing something here.

Don,
Ok...Here's the plan:
* Make some 1" by 2" aluminum backing strips.
* Drill a hole about an inch or so from the end - centered - that
the hole is the same width as the slots cut into the flaperon by
the factory
* Using a band saw, cut out a maching slot in my 1" by 2" aluminum
backing plate so that it matches the slot size in the flaperons.
* But here's the catch...don't cut all of the slot out...Leave just
enough so that the slot material can be bent upwards forming a
handle so it can be placed inside the flaperon while being held
from the outside by using the bent slot material as the handle.
* By leaving this little 'handle', it should be possible to slather
some Hysol on the part...Wedge it through the narrow opening in
the flaperon without dropping it...And then bond it to the inside
of the flaperon.
* When the Hysol cures, file (or bend) off the 'handle'.
* What should be left, is an almost invisible repair (except for the
dents on the outside).
* The dents, I figure that I'd fill with SuperFil.
Well, this is my plan so far. What do you guys think?

I think you are working WAY TOO hard to fix some very small slits. You
might make it look worse through your efforts. The guy that mentioned
putting the patches on the exterior surface was right on target. Very small
visual impact....and a very thorough correction of the problem.

Victor,
You've already got plenty of good advice, so I'll just add: fly in the
morning and rest in the afternoon.
One July morning, a while back, I flew into Leadville to get the
certificate, T-shirt, and brag that I'd been there. I was in a Cessna-180,
so it was no real credit to my flying skills. My ego was deflated as
several Rans S-12's, and an S-6 arrived from Houston, TX. The Texans were
huffing and puffing just walking around the ramp, but their 582 and 912
powered Rans performed exceptionally well and the DA was about 13000.

Ron,
Not sure I exactly followed the repair but, I think I get the idea. Work
the repair plates thru the flaperon cuts and then pull them back so they are
actually glued to the inside. Then simply fair the outside to look good. If
I followed correctly, sounds good to me.

This was one of those rare days that my wife actually said to me "please go fly
and get out of my way for the afternoon". Don't know what I did right, but if
I figure it out I am gonna do it again. Anyway, wanted to compare my EGT readings
with some of you that have more experience with the 912. At 4500' msl
and 4800 to 5000 rpm I am seeing about 1575 degrees F on my gauge(gauge calibrated
two months ago). When I reduce rpm to 4000 EGT drops to about 1450 degrees
f.
My operators manual on the 912 says 1570 degrees F for EGT is the maximum. Just
wondering what your experience is the 912 and EGT.
BTW it was a beautiful calm day in Texas and about 45 degrees F. That may sound
warm to some of you, but at 4500' this ole boy was shivering.

Michel,
Not sure what you painted your glass parts with but when I painted my IV I
used Stitts Polytone on the fabric and had my local auto paint store match
the Polytone color in a PPG product for the glass parts, may be another
option for you to consider no matter what scheme you go with.

It looks god Michel. I think it is a good plan to
only paint the easily removed parts too. This looks
like good European training plane colours and it will
make you more visible on the ground and in flight.
I was wondering if there is any paint scheem from your
father's planes that you would like instead? Just a
consideration. I know the KF is not like a C-119 at
all, but just wondered.

Oh, I forgot to say that you have to be careful how
you cover those darker colors on the wings and tail.
It is hard to keep the dark blue from showing thru or
tinting the top colour. You may need to paint white
first, then your new colour over it. If it is a
problem, then you would be better coming close to
matching the origional colour instead of changing.

The recent discussion about using the right oil has
made me think, so this is just a comment I've been
holding on to that may or may not have anything to do
with this missing plane:
When I looked up the Dr's plane last week, I was led
to an accident report about his first flight. Seems
he made a downwind takeoff that ended in a crash. The
possibility of latent damage, or stubornness could be
a factor in this one.
I neither know the Dr or the plane, so take this only
as a comment.
People who are not stuborn will take notice, and
people who are stuborn probably will not.

Hi Clem,
That was a good comparison for the short time they had
to do it. I wish they flew the planes side by side to
eliminate any ASI accuracy problems. The Jabber not
starting probably prevented that.
Seems the Jabber can keep up with the Rotax while
being lighter. Jabiru advertises it as a good
replacement fot the 582, so Michel should be happy
too.

Jimmie,
This has been one of those scan items that needs careful watching...climbing and
above 3000' , no problems. But below 3000' feet, the rpm need to be below 3600
or above 5300 to keep the EGT 1550 or below. This has worked out fine for me
and the engine has performed flawlessly. However, low altitude formation flying
with other slower airplanes could present a problem. Flew with a Fitfox Model
1 one time, I was at 1500' MSL, 3600 rpm, EGT at 1550 and 70 mph and he was
at full throttle, we did just fine. If he could have gone faster, say 90 or
so, we would have had to be above 3000' MSL or my EGT would have been in the
red with about 4600 rpm.

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Clifford Begnaud" <shoeless@barefootpilot.com>
Jim,
Thanks for the outing report, I love hearing stories about kitfoxes doing
off airport operations. We can all learn from other peoples experiences, and
this is an environment where mistakes happen often and the consequences are
often severe.
Just a little tidbit to tuck in your "bush flying" toolbox... if you are
considering landing in a new spot and you don't know how long it is, you can
estimate it very accurately by timing a pass over the spot at 70 statute mph
GROUND SPEED, not airspeed. At this speed, one second equals 100 feet. Of
course a gps is best to determine that you are really going 70 mph over the
ground. It's also a good idea to "drag" the landing spot. This just means
that you fly low and slow over the spot from different directions to
thoroughly examine the landing area. You can even touch one wheel down to
test the surface, after taking a good look at it.
The one time I failed to drag a landing spot , it almost cost me my plane...
I was lucky that there were no adverse consequences because I barely missed
running the plane into an unseen narrow erosion gully.
Have fun,
Cliff

Left this morning at 12:45 and flew till 6:15 Yes i did stop once to fill
up and did numerous landings on unnamed backcountry roads and grass fields.
I love western Kansas. temp was 66 out and no wind . A friend Got his BREEZY
out and we flew together for awhile . while trying to follow another friend
in his powered parachute . We outran him . Even with full flaps and high
nose and power setting i couldnt get down to his speed lol . I never went
slower than 40 indicated i do not like spinning in . It was a beautiful day
Hope the rest of you had a great weekend flying or being grounded .
Take care all fly safe fly low fly slow

I put my patch on the outside. Virtually invisible
from a foot away once painted.

The consensus so far seems to be leaning towards
bonding an aluminum backing strip onto the inside

Looks good Michel. The yellow will be particularly
visible in the air and is well integrated.

If you are flying anywhere near Lake Powell, be sure to stop at Page AZ. A
wonderfull untowered airport with friendly people and a great little town
nearby. And ,of course, fantastic scenery.
