I understand that, Jim. I also know that e.g. a Piper Cub is flown from the back seat and that passenger weight is important in a tandem seat plane. But I thought that the Kitfox designers had manage to get both the wing tanks and pilot/passenger CG so close to the designed total CG that it didn't matter. I was proved wrong and I stand now corrected. Regarding the battery, yes, mine will have acid and I guess a box is safer then. I just have to find a way to fit the box in the little place I have back the seats. Cheers, Michel do not archive

    Subject: Battery and CoG
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Michel Verheughe <michel@online.no> I am sorry, guys, but I got this completely wrong. Maybe it is all that fumes from the epoxy moulding going to my brain! :-) I wrote that I had a 4 Amp battery and that Jabiru recommended a 10 Amps. That's wrong. I have a 12 Amps battery now and Jabiru recommend a 20 Amps. My Norwegian dealer says: 20 to 25 Amps in our climate. So, I got a 24 Amps battery that I thought would fit behind the seat, in a bracket that was there from the time the plane had an ELT. But the battery is half an inch too high to come between the tubes. So, I was wondering: Can I keep my existing 12 Amps battery on the firewall and connect in parallel another one of say the same capacity, behind the seat? Of course, it won't move the CoG as far aft as if I had only one battery but from what you wrote, my CoG is not too bad as it is. Also: two batteries in parallel will sum up, won't it? BTW, if you had to have your CoG not in the center, would you rather have it aft or fore of it? I understand that an aft CoG is a tendency to spin. How about ground loop? Does a more forward CoG helps preventing it? The thing is: if fuel, pilot and passenger moves the CoG aft, then before, I had mine maybe outside the limit. Yet, I didn't managed to land my tailwheel first until I had gap-sealed the elevator. Hum, am I a bad pilot? Cheers, Michel do not archive

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Steve Cooper" <spdrflyr@earthlink.net> Hey Michael...the battery deal for the Jabiru can be sort of picky. The Jab has a fair amount of compression and initial starting when cold can be a pain in the azz. I'm running an Odyssey PC625 dry cell. It can be mounted upside down if you need it to be. The cranking amps are HUGE for an 11 pound battery. Check it out. Mine works beautifully. I also initially used two batteries...what a pain! --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Lowell Fitt" <lcfitt@inreach.com> Michel, As I recall, when Bub knuchols (sp) from the AeroElectrics Connection - now hosting the AeroElectrics list on matronics - was discussing this issue, he mentioned that a large - read high amperhour battery - is for reserve power in the case of alternator failure. It has little to do with cranking. Unless of course you feel that you will be cranking for a long time. An engine that starts readily, will draw a lot of amps for a short time, but will not significantly encroach on the 14 amperehour battery's reserve. He mentioned that in some cases, a large battery has sufficient internal resistance that "cranking amps" can be lower than with a smaller battery. ' Don't know if this is helpful, but the others that are using a smaller battery than have been recommended might have just the info you are looking for. Following with interest, Lowell ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michel Verheughe" <michel@online.no> Subject: Kitfox-List: Battery and CoG > --> Kitfox-List message posted by: Michel Verheughe <michel@online.no> > > I am sorry, guys, but I got this completely wrong. They range from very simple and inexpensive to very complex and costly. I would appreciate some input from those that have flow them in our real, little planes. I would especially be interested in what angles were determined for best lift/glide, stall and so on. I am a little fuzzy there. Rick
