I can't say that I'm a real SkyStar fan. Building my Classic IV-1200 was a case
of making a silk purse from a sows ear. The kit that I received was of very
poor quality. Nothing ever fit properly and my friends would joke about how
every time they would come by my shop I was screaming about what a piece of junk
this or that part was and how much work it took to put things together. I finally
took a welding class at the local college and learned to fabricate parts
myself, because in some cases that was the only way to get parts to fit. So
I share the frustration of the guy waiting for his engine.
But, Boycotting or getting a lawyer and suing SkyStar is not the the answer.
Frank seems to be doing his best to clean up the mess left to him. When a set
of the old style wing struts rusted through after hanging on the wall of my shop
for four years, he sent me a new pair of the seaplane struts for free, including
shipping!
Before buying the KItfox, I purchased the first kit from a new company called
MoHawk, short for Missouri Hawk. It was a total piece of junk. An IA looked
at it and told me the welds were so bad that it would probably break and he would
never sign it off. In an attempt to clean up some of the worst welds they
took a grinder to them and made it worse by grinding into the tubes. I didn't
receive half of the parts for the kit and the instructions were incomplete. I
returned the kit and demanded my money back. He ended up selling the kit to someone
else and never returned my money. I got an Attorney, sued him and won. His
response was to fold up the company an thumb his nose at me. I not only lost
the price of the kit, but also the cost of an Attorney and years of frustration
while attempting to collect.
While building my Kitfox, I wanted to sell it many a time, but here is a light
at the end of the tunnel. After six years and 3300 hours of construction I
discovered that flying a Kitfox is a lot more fun than building it and I'm glad
that I hung in there.

All,
I have been thinking about the Skystar situation and trying to think of any
ideas that would help them out.
The idea of Frank or someone from Skystar posting on here on a regular
basis I think would help out. We as Kitfox builders and owners are the best
sales people they will ever find.
One other thing that has bothered me personally is that I have purchased
parts from people on this list,Ebay, etc. instead of from Skystar because I
had more faith in the availability of that part from a person I have never
meet than from the company that manufactured the parts for my plane. Not a
good situation for me or Skystar.
Maybe if Skystar posted on here or their web site all parts they have in
stock, with the quantity they may generate some sales. I would have
personally purchased probably $1000.00 of parts in the last year or so if I
had hard numbers on the quantity in stock at Skystar. If stock of items are
getting low just watch how fast they sell also. Maybe its time for the
Skystar garage sale?
Just some thoughts.

Some of you may remember not long ago, I was trying to sell off parts and
materials so the business I work for could keep their heads above water. At
first, my employer was in earnest agreement (any idea was great). As a few
orders started to come in, they got nervous and less willing to sell off stock.
I simply put a stop to the idea.
After thinking about this a little, selling off a simple Altimeter or
two, maybe a quad gauge would only have been a drop in the bucket. Face it, if
I
sold $1,000 worth of parts per month, that wouldn't even pay the hanger rent
much less all the other expenses. In our case, we needed to sell a kit or
two. There is profit built into that and the amount of money would keep the ship
floating for several months. I don't know SS's situation but have a feeling
it might be similar to what I see here every day.
This Experimental aviation business seems to be in the pits right now.
Even on good years, I don't think many people in this business got rich. It's
my opinion, people get into this experimental aircraft business because they
love the smell of Poly Dope more than money. I once asked a senior Commercial
Airline Pilot (Amy Laboda's husband) about his career. He commented, "One has
to eat an awful lot of beans before he gets in the left seat of a 747").
Maybe some of our Airline pilots might agree with that statement.

Just from my personal experience, I thought that SS
fell into a final failure mode for certain after
losing John McBean. I would like to keep positive as
much as possible toward SS, but when John left, I took
it as seeing the best man I knew of on the inside
leaving and telling me there is something I should
know too.
I am concerned that SS, while great at aircraft and
aviation, was missing good business knowledge and
hasn't gathered enough of that yet to recover. You
need the right people, the right product, and the
right service in that order. The right product by
itself won't do it.
The right people means you also need someone who knows
business and money management to keep solvant. They
have to be tight and hard nosed. Who does that for SS
now?
Of course you need good staff. Good welders are
essential. Office staff, inventory, shipping all need
to be the best you can get. SS did pretty well there
in the past I think. The product we did get was good.
But you need someone like John to sell and resell. To
communicate with you. Who does that now?
I hope SS makes it, but let's see the hard nose,
fiscally tight, people person, boss speak up.
Just another opinion.

to bankrupt? If they are really trying to get it together they don't need alot

the plane. I was up flying today and the same thing happened. I reset it while
running down the stip and once up to approx. 1,000 AGL it was bouncing around
5,000 ft. So is my altimeter shot or what? Help me out here.

Hi Kurt,
Nice analysis, but I think one very important thing needed that has been
missing since Phil and his sister sold SkyStar is Capital. Had there been
enough capital, Ed and the crew would have had insurance, and recovered from
the C-182 debacle. Then the downturn would have been a bit easier to get
thru, and John might still be there.
IMHO.
Cheers,

Hi Dee,
This could be a static source problem, not an altimeter problem. Do you have
a static source vent? Or is the altimeter not vented?
When the plane is going, there will be some ambient pressure changes going
on inside the cabin, and it could either be pressurized or even
de-pressurized. It sounds like you are saying that the altimeter is
registering lower than it should. That means that there is less pressure
inside the cabin than outside in still air. In any event, it should not be
"bouncing", but be pretty steady and make changes very slowly.
You could borrow someone else's altimeter to check, but the easiest thing to
check is your static system, if you have one.

Hi Dee,
This could be a static source problem, not an altimeter problem. Do you have
a static source vent? Or is the altimeter not vented?
When the plane is going, there will be some ambient pressure changes going
on inside the cabin, and it could either be pressurized or even
de-pressurized. It sounds like you are saying that the altimeter is
registering lower than it should. That means that there is less pressure
inside the cabin than outside in still air. In any event, it should not be
"bouncing", but be pretty steady and make changes very slowly.
You could borrow someone else's altimeter to check, but the easiest thing to
check is your static system, if you have one.

When doing the preflight I set my altimeter to the field elevation. Once I
begin my run down the airstrip I have noticed that most times it will drop
from 4,900 to 46 or 4,700 ft. The altimeter appeared to be used but was what
came with the plane. I was up flying today and the same thing happened. I
reset it while running down the stip and once up to approx. 1,000 AGL it was
bouncing around 5,000 ft. So is my altimeter shot or what? Help me out here.

Dee,
Just port it directly behind the instrument.. Turn the tubing down or put
a
90 off the back of the instrument.
Fly Safe !!

I have the static port installed up mid way and just in front of the left
cabin door. Could this installation be causing my problem?
