Greg I have been using my Icom for over 20 years in an Auster with no
electrical system. It's
still going strong. Back then it was about the only one on the market and
now the choice is
much greater. Icom seem to have an excellent reputation.

Same with the 5 Steve. No different. I've built both the 2 and 5 and both
have the same setup. I don't know about 6 or 7. I used heavy duty aluminum
tape and made a lip that follows the windshield all the way around so that
any leakage past the seal drips down the side. It still gets inside the
airplane, but not on any of the panel goodies. Best fix is to avoid parking
outside or have a good cover made.

Hi Glenn,
Where's Don Smytheeee? He became the 582 "expert"!
I used a 160-165F thermostat for at least 600 of the 800 hours I put on my
582. With the 135F thermostat, it cooled off too much on descents to land.
Don't agree with the expert thing but Glenn told me to kiss off and stay
on my own side of the James River.
When flying in 20 degree weather, mine still cools to the 135 degree
range on decents (w/ 165 stat) even with both of the new radiator flaps closed
completely. Still in the design stages to improve this. On the other hand,
in 20 degree weather, I can cruise with both flaps closed and still not get
over 165 degrees. In 40 degree weather, I get good positive control over temps
with the dual radiator flaps. Future thought/goal would be to get rid of
the thermostat altogether. It is a point of failure plus somewhat a
restriction to water flow (IMO). I believe it was Torgeir that said he operates
without a thermostat and covers the radiator during winter months. I think I
will
try that soon and see how the rad flaps handle this.
Eager to see what 90 degree weather will do since the whole mod was for
overheating in hot weather conditions.

Dave,
Have you considered insetting the little unit to the panel like a regular
radio usually is? Have seen it done, and considering going that route
myself...........like the cost and all the new features the little buggers
have, plus the possibility of removing and using in my back pocket too. All
the hookups and accessories allow for it to be used in the cockpit as a
substitute so why not use it as the primary too!
What say you?

I've just about given up using strips of canvas to cover varying parts of my radiator
and am looking for drawings or, if possible, a kit, for a cockpit controlled
radiator flap. I have a 618 radiator with a 582 and the strip technique
is just too inflexible. Ideally I'd like to install one that has the flap in
the back but I'm not wedded to that idea.
So, if any of you can help me out I'd be most grateful.

During flight testing on N728KF I took her to 17,500 feet and she was
still climbing 300 feet per minute! I stopped there because she was
not equipped for instrument flight rules, which is required in the
Class A airspace at and above 18,000 feet in the U.S.
The world certainly looked very small from up there...the sky was

Ah! In Norway, microlights are limited to 10,000 ft. I'll never need a bottle.
Well, not that kind of bottle, anyway! :-)
BTW, here is a link to a page of our microlight club:
http://jfs.no/album22.html
You can see a "legal" night flight over south Norway. By mid-June, the night is
so short that you can fly at 9,500 ft and still be in the legal "sun over 6
degrees under the horizon."
Torgeir, on the other hand, lives so far north that he has the midnight sun.
Cheers,
Michel

What did you do, Bruce? How do you adjust the idle RPM?
Today, I went flying. Well, I rather checked out my son on the new engine, as
he did some touch and go, and I was watching the instruments from the right
hand seat. I had previously reduced the idle by unscrewing the throttle arm's
stopper half a turn. On the ground, the engine wasn't then making more that
about 800 RPM but when landing, it was still around 1,100 - 1,200.
Cheers,
Michel

I'm getting ready to install the hinges for the flaperon horn bearing,
and got to wondering what folks do if they go to the one-piece lexan

have the same camloc spacing as the IV, but did have the lexan t'deck,
and no bearing. Did SS do away with the flaperon bearing on later
models? I also recall speaking with someone who said not to bother with
the bearing...what IS the right way to go?

Lynn,
I don't have the one piece lexan but do have a one piece fiberglass
(home fabricated). I simply cut slots in the fiberglass so they would fit down
over the flapperon tubes. I have the flapperon bearings attached to the
inside 4130 fuselage tabs with ball lock pins (also home fabricated and not the
SS
design). However, after hearing that the flapperon bearings weren't
necessary on the model IV and above, I took out the ball lock pins. The bearings
just sit there and aren't attached. Doesn't seem to matter. I have grabbed
hold of the flapperon horns in flight and feel no flutter or unnecessary
vibration. I'm basically flying with "no" flapperon hinges at the turtledeck.
Having said that, I'm also flying with a 582 with max normal cruise of 90 MPH
so
I can't speak to higher speed Foxes.

I've just about given up using strips of canvas to cover varying parts of my
radiator and am looking for drawings or, if possible, a kit, for a cockpit
controlled radiator flap. I have a 618 radiator with a 582 and the strip
technique is just too inflexible. Ideally I'd like to install one that has
the flap in the back but I'm not wedded to that idea.
So, if any of you can help me out I'd be most grateful.

That link does not work at least for me. What is the contril device listed

It worked for me but did not give a picture or very much information (like
size, etc). All that it gave is below. I think I like the idea of "sliding"
louvers. Price sounds pretty good. I have more than that invested at $.50
per hour

Sorry I didn't answer question on rpm's.
I am idling at 500 rpm., nicely. Do not do
this for long periods to keep heat down.

Don,
Do have some pics of the sliding type. I would be interested in seeing how
it works. Guess I could put my thermostat back in or rig up a big control
valve. Guess I am a little worried about the valve getting stuck in the
closed position, could happen with the louvers as well I suppose. I just
need more heat in low power setting at economy cruise especially when it is
cold out.

Hi Jose,
When I bought my Jab 3300 (back when they were $10,800!), Sonex was offering
the AeroCarb. Manual mixture control I liked. Also let the Jab produce
more power at full throttle. It seemed much smpler than the Bing.
However, I have had a history of sticky and then stuck carb slides due to my
carb being an early version. I now have updated parts, which includes every
part except for the bell which attaches to the engine. Just did the first
test run and flight on the new parts today, and it worked quite well. Even
with the prior problems, I had accumulated close to 100 hours over 1.5
years.
Check out the AeroCarb at http://www.aeroconversions.com/
Cheers,
bh
