Steve do you have any experience with or do you know anyone who has one of
these electronic AIs? I'm curious how they work and whether they're as
accurate as the RC Allen type. Price doesn't seem to be much different than
the old conventional units.
If they make an electronic AI (that really works) to fit in the 3.125 hole
I'd seriously consider upgrading.

No direct experience. I've seen them demonstrated at the shows but never
used one in flight. But they sure seem responsive enough. Maybe...Oshkosh?

Deke,
Congrats on getting safely back home with the 'new' airplane, what an ordeal
(and well written to). I remember the airplane well and it is a beauty.
Glad to see you equipping for getting through the clouds on those rare
occasions when stuck on top. Just some advice from an old CFI; get the right
training to use the instruments and keep proficient, so when you need to use the
ticket you can do so safely.
For serious (IMC) instrument flying I would look to reputable instruments
(TSO'd) and backups. The new electronic AI's are getting to be really
interesting. There are a number of methods used to drive these units and depending
on the quality they can be better or worse than the standard gyro driven
units. Unless you are an electronics guru, I would suggest starting by looking
at
what the certified aircraft are using, such as the Chelton or Avidyne PFD's.
See what makes them tick. Then check out the units that cost about 75%
less and find out if they meet the same requirements and ask why they are so
cheap? I have to admit, the cheap units look pretty good. I just wonder though
if their update rates are up to the task? Do they 'tumble' at excessive
bank angles? If GPS driven, will a steep turn blank out the signal just when
you need it, etc, etc.
Just some things to think about.

I guess that begs the question: Does anybody have flying experience flying
the new electronic attitude indicators?? Good/Bad stories?

Is the gearbox noisy in all of these 582/B box configurations???? Mine seems
more noisy after flying for 30 min. or longer then upon power reduction it
seems
quite noticeable. The oil is clean with no evidence of cuttings or wear in
the past oil change.
I just put Castrol SAF-XA synthetic oil in my "E" box and it is quieter. It
is GL6 rated. I changed the oil then after a couple of hours changed it
again to flush all the old mineral oil out. It is expensive oil but not
really as you only use 200cc even when the box is mounted up like mine.

I just ordered mine from the local tyre shop. Took 1 day to arrive at $63AU
each. Tubes I later fitted were $13AU each

Hi Rex,
Your Type-B reduction drive should not be noisy at all, unless you have your
idle set very low causing the gear box to "clatter" a bit.
I guess I have some questions re the service life of the gear drive.
How many hours total on the gear drive?
Type/Manufacturer/Diameter and number of blades of your propeller?
Manufactuer/Type and viscosity of the gear oil being used?
What rpms' do you notice the noise and what does it sound like?
With the above info we can possibly help.
Aside form the above...keep and eye on your E drive gear seals.
We switched away from synthetic oils in our gear drives as the
seals would weep oil when using synthetic.. I guess it's just so slippery
that it works its way though the seal. After 10+ hours it left a gummy
film on the re-drive and engine block. Switching back to regurlar gear oil
stopped the problem. I don't know if other have experienced this.

Thanks Bob. If it is what I think it is it cost about $700 for the upgrade.
