I put a Dynon EFIS in my Kitfox 4-1200 about 8 months ago as a trial run for
using one in another homebuilt. I am very happy with it. The attitude
indicator is very responsive and the unit also has airspeed and altitude
tapes as well as AS, Alt and DG digital displays. There are also a number
of other functions the unit provides. Installation of the Dynon was also
pretty easy after buying the installation harness for the unit from Stein
Air. These low cost EFIS units, (relatively speaking), from Dynon and Blue
Mountain are very impressive units and a visit to their web sites will give
you pricing and much more info.

Aside form the above...keep and eye on your E drive gear seals.
We switched away from synthetic oils in our gear drives as the
seals would weep oil when using synthetic.. I guess it's just so slippery
that it works its way though the seal. After 10+ hours it left a gummy
film on the re-drive and engine block. Switching back to regurlar gear oil
stopped the problem. I don't know if other have experienced this.

After the second change of the synthetic I did get a slight weep
from the bottom seal. I wiped it clean and have had no further sign at all.
A friend Graham Toft from Queensland has an earlier 582 in a MKI and flew my
MKIV blue head 582 the other day and was amazed how quiet it was. No I don't
think it was really noisy before on mineral oil but at 2,000 RPM with it
taxing towards you while standing outside there was the usual noise. It is
now definitely quieter in that situation as well as from the cockpit. I am
fussy about oil weepage and will be concerned if this reoccurs but I figure
it just cleaned out the seal from junk collected with the mineral oil. I
know all this scenario occurs in cars when changing to synthetic and
sometimes one needs to change back or change seals. I am so pleased with the
results I would change seals before changing back to mineral oil especially
as I consider synthetic to be better lubrication. The only thing to watch
out for is moisture absorbtion with the synthetic so I won't run it in my
engine although there is probably a good case to run a synthetic/mineral
mixture especially if using the plane often. My motor and box are only about
85 hours time.

Congratulations on your successful cross country. As they say 'Attitude is everything'.
Hopefully I'll be able to report on flying the Dynon EFIS this summer. Take a look
at the photo
archive at sportflight.com under Gotta-haves. The hole to the right of the Dynon
is for a low-fuel
annunciator. As an instrument pilot I didn't feel comfortable without any A.H.
and selected
the Dynon for it's combined capabilities and simple installation. It has a built-in
battery backup.
The airspeed indicator is the only steam gauge as all the engine instrumentation
is via Grand
Rapids EIS.

Yesterday I flew to our annual Easter fly-in, at Fyresdal ENFY. The weather was
wonderful, CAVOK and no wind. I flew with my son and Kenneth, my hangar
neighbour, with his Rans S6. Kenneth is very good at flying close formation.
