Subject: | Broken Engine Mount |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Leach Family" <leach@wk.planet.gen.nz>
Hi everyone
Last year I completed my Avid Flyer (with a 80 hp Rotax 912 engine) and I have
been having a ball with it. I have flown it for 60 hours but a couple of days
ago I discovered one engine mount almost completely broken off!! Steve Winder
has advised me that Kitfoxes up to model IV used identical engine mounts to
the Avids for the 912 engines.
Have any of you with early Kitfoxes and 912 engines had any of the following problems?
When I fitted the engine the mounting rails nowhere near lined up with
the engine bolt holes or with the ring mount. I had to heat them up red hot
to bend them and they may have cooled too quickly and got brittle.
Also the big rubber mounting washers dont seem to squeeze up very tight. The bolts
tighten up on the steel sleeves before squeezing the rubber very much, which
allows the engine to wobble around quite easily.
There is clear evidence where my engine has moved so far that the mounts have made
metal to metal contact with the support tubes which would put a huge stress
on the mounting rails. My top right hand rail has broken just above the rear
engine bolt.
I have been reading with great interest all your comments about carbs falling off
and installing extra mag switches etc to get smoother starts. When I first
started my engine I had some very shakey starts and both my carbs fell off!
I fixed that problem with a special support bracket but obviously the bad starts
have overstressed the mounts and started the crack.
Any advice anyone can give me would be appreciated.

Can some one post or email me the Differances of the Kitfox IV 1050
gross versus the 1200 Gross.
What Exactly is the differances?
I think i read some where the Struts and spar tubes were larger.
I have a Kitfox with a serial number very close to the #1725 serial and
i think that is where they changed to the classic IV.
Any help would be appreciated, and any other Kitfox Flyers in Ontario
west of Toronto?
Thank you ,
Kitfox
Still alive and flyin!!!!

Gee Tim,
You sure do talk purdy... great info. we need more of this info and it
does not matter if it is tainted or not with personal feelings. thanks.
by the way, with about 200 flight hours on your fox i believe it is one of
the best I have flowen. I am glad to see it get in the air again. Just
don't make it too nice or it will detract from mine and I won't be able to
fly with you.

Common problem 91x worse with the 912S. Skystar has a stronger mount for sale
$$, or you can do your own beef up.
Read the Skystar bulletin on squeeze for the bushings, and get new ones.
The whole issue can be resolved by raising the idle speed and changing your method
of start and shutdown with the goal of eliminating shake.
Electric fuel pump is used to fill the carbs so both sides of the engine start
firing at the same time which helps reduce the shake. Some even have added return
lines to assure the carbs are full on start. No electric pump, just crank
with ignition off for the necessary time.
The shake makes the rubber boots fail quickly.
Other issues dealing with plug wires and carbs must be addressed to minimize vibration
and shake.
You did not harm with the torch.the 4130 metal should air cool without getting
brittle. It would have been better to cold bend the tubes. No harm, however.
You must fix the vibration & shake to avoid future issues, even with the stronger
mount.
Good luck, Paul

Hi Ray,
Did your wingtips scrape when you groundlooped? What tail wheel did you
have? What type of surface where you on? Did you have the aluminum landing
gear on? When my Model V was ground looped on pavement the wheel came off
and the wing tip scraped the ground. (The wheel bolts that attach to the
landing gear broke)

Yes, 4 times in the first 120 hours, even though I flew a BD-4 800 hours and
never groundlooped.
The problem, as I saw it is the CG is too far behind the axles. I turned the
landing gear legs around so they slant back. This moves the axles 3" toward
the CG, and it want a long way to solve the proble. In fact, I now do nice
wheel
landings, just like I always do in the BD-4. The trade-off is a lighter
tail,
allowing more of a tendency to nose over in the mud.

NTSB Identification: SEA05LA073
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Sunday, April 10, 2005 in Cresent City, FL
Aircraft: Shorethose Kitfox Series 5, registration: N704LS
Injuries: 1 Uninjured.
This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain
errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final
report has been completed.
On April 10, 2005, about 1930 eastern daylight time, a tail-wheel
equipped, experimental category, Shorethose Kitfox Series 5, N704LS,
sustained substantial damage subsequent to a nose-over during landing
at Jim Finlay Farm Airport, Crescent City, Florida. The airplane is
owned by the pilot and was being operated as a visual flight rules
(VFR) cross-country flight under the provisions of Title 14, CFR Part
91, when the accident occurred. The private pilot, the sole occupant of
the airplane, was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions
prevailed and no flight plan had been activated for the flight that
originated from Donalsonville, Georgia, (17J), approximately two hours
and thirty minutes prior to the accident.
During a telephone conversation with the National Transportation Safety
Board IIC, on April 12, the pilot reported that the airplane developed
a rough running engine and he elected to make a precautionary landing.
He stated the touchdown and initial rollout was normal, however the
airplane encountered a soft/muddy area on the runway and nosed over.
The pilot stated he did not know the reason for the rough running
engine.
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the vertical stabilizer
and right jury strut.
NTSB Identification: SEA05LA071
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Wednesday, April 06, 2005 in Eagle Point, OR
Aircraft: Park Kitfox IV, registration: N70265
Injuries: 1 Minor.
This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain
errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final
report has been completed.
On April 6, 2005, about 1400 Pacific daylight time, a homebuilt Park
Kitfox IV, N70265, registered to and flown by the pilot as a 14 CFR
Part 91 personal flight, experienced a partial power loss shortly after
takeoff from Beagle Sky Ranch, Eagle Point, Oregon. An emergency, off
airport, landing was made to a field south of the airstrip. During the
landing roll, the aircraft collided with terrain and the nose wheel
collapsed. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and
no flight plan was filed. The aircraft was substantially damaged and
the private pilot, the sole occupant, received minor injuries.
During a telephone interview, the pilot reported that he took off to
the south. Shortly after take off, about 150 feet above ground level,
the engine lost partial power. The airplane was unable to maintain
altitude, and the pilot initiated an off airport emergency landing to
an open field. During the landing roll, the nose gear collapsed when
the pilot tried to maneuver away from obstructions.

Oooo Tanks. I too am looking forward to the day very soon when that
engine comes alive. When only a strong rope tied between a post an the
tail gear keep her from leaping into the air. Once testing is
completed, no more rope.
John no problem. I'll make sure that I only have one (1) whistle and
one (1) bell so as to not compete with your multi-bling-bling bird.
Spit and polish will be held to a minimum so that any sparkle that
emanates won't cause you to blink, blush or the embarrassment of
starring for long periods. However, be aware that during flight you
should dawn your instrument training hood as a precautionary measure to
aid you in limiting your visual exposure to the sparkle when nearing
N316R in-flight. I'll try to insure that your view of my craft's
rearend will have minimal associated sparkle. This should give you a
comfortable space from which to conduct you aviation skills during our
future flights of two*. I do understand. Throttling back a little is
not a problem. Should you decide to take the lead, I'll have adequate
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) onboard capable of effectively
neutralizing any bling-bling bird encountered. You will fly with me?
Won't You?
Tim Kaser -- enlightenment is always engaging.
