The problem with friendship on this list is the big distance that separate us. I know that some of you meet sometimes but even here, in Norway, if I was to meet Torgeir, I would need to fly maybe 15 hours. I might do it, though, one day. But right now, I am preparing my longest trip, to Belgium. I just have to fly the sky my father flew from WWII to the sixties. And I have to fly over cemetery where my parents rest. My ETD is anytime from two weeks from now. I'll follow carefully the weather and make a decision 24 hours before. I hope the succession of lows northern Europe has seen lately will soon make place to a nice stationary high with little wind and ... sunshine! :-) Cheers, Michel

It will slowly lower its efficiency. Thanks Jim and Kurt. What can I expect to see if I do fly in rain? The lacker of my prop gets tarnished? Or is it only the leading edge that suffers? Cheers, Michel

Do you feel you get a better peripheral view and evaluate your distance from the ground when landing with the doors open, Andrew? Cheers, Michel PS: From reading this list, I understand that you have to be careful and avoid side slipping with the doors open. You may blow your turtle deck away.

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Jimmy Crane" <jimmy_crane@hotmail.com> Mike, Thanks for you response to my inquiry. I'm getting about 50/50 response on the subject which is interesting but I've still got to make up my mind. New Subject! I saw your great looking N728KF in the June issue of SportAviation. Man is that a great look in IV. I see you the a nose wheel. I was talking to Frank about the possibility of converting my 1994 model IV to a tri gear and he said the conversion kit they sold would not apply to my 1994 fuselage. In you artical under Arizona Kitfox you stated you purchased your kit in 1992. Did it come as a try gear or did you convert. I would be interested in the details if you didn't mind sharing. Thank! But the spring would be one of the things that may fail, and if I want a fail-safe design, I'll need something else to make sure it stays open. > You could use your X-Plane simulator to "see" the > pressure around your cowl, right? Unfortunately no, Kurt. While we did some experiment with Mathias, it was done entirely on airfoils. Those are pretty well simulated if you can enter the correct coefficients of lift, drag and moment for each AoA. But modelling the air flow around a cowl flap would need CFM (computerized fluid modelling) and that demands large "number-cruncher" computers that work for hours to produce a single time frame. > I do not believe that you need 4 times the exit as > cowl entry for your engine. Yes, it may have been an exaggeration from my dealer. But I still have to witness the heat of the summer to be sure. One thing, though: I went flying two days ago and while my CHT was "cool" as usual, I noticed that the oil temperature was going up to a point where I even considered "step climb" to let it cool a bit. And yes, I have the oil cooler on. > With your current door, do you close off the > exit more than 2 to 1 when fully closed? With the current door, I close entirely by getting the door to rest on the bottom of the fuselage. But the door is not all the way to the edge of the opening. It covers only 75% of it. I did it that way because I am afraid to close entirely by error and create a high pressure inside the cowling that might blow it open ... from the top. Cheers, Michel

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Andrew Matthaey" <spaghettiohead@hotmail.com> Yep - I think I do get a better picture while landing with the doors open...but honestly, I really don't remember too much about any of my landings - I pretty much just do what needs to be done to stay down and in one piece. It seems to be working, because I'm pretty happy with most of my landings ;) I'll bring a video camera with me one time so that I can evaluate my own landings more in-depth! I didn't know about slipping with the doors open and losing the turtle-deck...that would really ruin my day! I have the less-than-great doorlocks that came with the series 3, so during a slip, the outboard door has a tendency to swing open - startles the passengers a bit! On my props they caused pitting in the leading edge of both the wooden and Carbon fiber props. Jim Shumaker
