That is only because you haven't tried one of the better props.
Have a look at the Bolly prop or the Russian props they have a "Real" prop
blade shape, beautiful curves and twist not a plank of wood shape. They
are a lot quieter too. My new prop is a Bolly, never again will I use a
Warp or Ivo.

I'd appreciate that, Jimmie. I've got a local Goodyear dealer, but when
I went to him last year, he couldn't find a tire that small. A stock
number would give him no excuse. : ) Are yours rounded in cross-section?

Andrew,
I have no experience with the two blade Powerfin, but the three blade, at
least on the 912, will boost climb, but reduce cruise. This was
demonstrated by two friends that switched. One from a GSC and the other
from a Warp Drive. The GSC guy eventually went back to his GSC and regained
what he lost. The other guy kept the Powerfin because he liked short strips
and liked the climb.
This was real stuff as we flew often together and it was obvious to all.
One thing they did, though to increase crusie performance a bit was shorten
each blade about an inch. I don't understand the aerodynamics, but it
seemed to help a bit.
Incidentally, welcome to the list. It's really good to see a young face
flying. Most of us are dreading our next medical - before Sport Pilot -
rather than looking froward to our next rating.

I am planning to order new tires myself on Monday. Will send you stock
number Monday afternoon. Yes they are rounded, which I think is very
important. I tried some tires with a square profile and I thought they made
ground handling a bit more difficult.

Clem, the reason the plugs on the left side are sooty is because of the
shape of the manifold and is normal for low throttle engine runs. They
clear up at flying rpms.
As for the compression, did you do it with wide open throttle? That's
important to get a good test.
Try the test when the engine is cold and let us know the results.

the NSI EA81 firewall forward package I removed the plugs from my engine in
order to check the valve settings. All 4 plugs were tan in color with no
evidence of carbon buildup. Only 3 of the 8 valves required minor
adjustment. I then reinstalled the plugs and ran the engine for several
minutes at 2000 rpm to warm it up for a compression test. Unfortunately, I
didn't pay any attention to the plugs when I removed them this time, but
later noticed that 2 of the 4 were sooty black. (The other 2 were still tan
with no soot whatsoever) Needless to say, I don't know which plug came from
which cylinder. The compression test showed 160 psi in cylinders 1 and 2
(those toward the cockpit) and 148 pounds in cylinders 3 and 4 at the prop
end. All of the above was done with the plane in typical tail-dragger
position, so cylinders 3 and 4 were slightly higher than 1 and 2. Also the
air filter was removed from!

(I didn't do a wet test), but I found it a little unusual that both
cylinders toward the rear of the plane showed exactly the same reading and
both cylinders toward the front of the plane also showed exactly the same
reading but 12 pounds less than the others. I also am puzzled by the fact
that 2 of the plugs after the warmup run were sooty while the other 2 were
not. Could the unlevel position of the engine during this time have
anything to do with the above? I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

Shortening the blades to increase cruise? Huh...never heard of that.
Thanks for the welcome! I find that people are very surprised when they see
me taxiing up to a parking spot in my Kitfox - they can't believe it's mine
;) Most of my friends and co-workers are shocked that I've had my PPL for
well over a year now, and even more shocked that I have an
airplane...needless to say they are all begging for rides!
Oh, and I flew my first x-country in the 'fox yesterday...I left my home
airport KDAW at 3.15p for KAUG (Augusta, ME) about 100 miles away. Had a
great flight, met a friend for some Dairy Queen, and headed back home. I was
getting nervous about my fuel state so I shut-off my left wing-tank with
less than a quarter gallon in it - just in case. I was still 15 miles out of
the airport over solid trees at 2K when my engine started sputtering and
damn near quit! But I was faster than Superman getting that fuel valve open
and ready with a shot of primer...I eased up on the throttle and entered the
pattern - I was dismayed when, on final approach, I saw the last of my fuel
drip through the in-line filter in the cockpit...I had just enough to land,
taxi off, and even park in front of my hangar ;)
What a great day! Two of my buddies were pulling their planes out, so I
threw another 5 gallons in my right tank and went out for another 1 hr or so
enjoying the evening and taking lots of pictures! So I got to log 4.1 on my
day off...
Anyway, lessons learned: No more than 3 hrs. at cruise anymore! That leaves
me a comfortable reserve. Number 2: Get a small gas can that I can sling
behind my seat, just in case!
Also, I was using Marvel Mystery Oil for the first time - It seemed to work
okay. I'm gonna pull out the plugs in a couple hours and see how they
look...Does anybody else use MMO in their 2-strokes?

Andrew,
I forgot what engine you have.
I have a 912S and the Powerfin "F", 72" three blade. I Found exactly what
Lowell repots below. Very quick off the ground, but I wish it had more top
end. I am still playing with it, but Powerfin suggests cutting it shorter.
I have real trouble with that because I like the short take offs. Greedy.
I want both! It is easy to adjust pitch and smooth.
I got the bright idea that what I should do is get a new hub for two blades.
I figure that this should let the engine wrap up to higher RPM's on takeoff
even with more pitch for top end speed. BUT,,,, Powerfin doesn't make a
two blade hub for the 912S. Stuart at Powerfin says that he is working on
a new product line that will offer that, but it will require new hubs and
blades!
One good thing about the three blade is that it really put the brakes on to
give a steep descent for landing. A two blade would not be as good for
that.

A quick advertisement, so it's the only time it will be shown....!
After many months of hard work, HomebuiltHELP is proud to announce that the "ROTAX
912 Installation Tips and Techniques" DVD video has been completed and is
now shipping. This is a training presentation on installing, wiring and configuring
the 912 family of engines for experimental aircraft.
Think of it as a video presentation of the Rotax Installation guide and then some!
Details at:

Andrew, I have a powerfin prop. I took it off and replaced it with a Warpdrive
taper tip.
Both were 3-blade. On my 80hp Rotax the Powerfin seems to require more hp for the
same performance. It is thicker and wider and produces more drag. That's my
opinion.

I've decided I really want to get a Powerfin on my 'fox...Has anybody gone
from a 3-blade to a 2-blade? What I am really looking for is better cruise
performance. I can give up a little bit on climb, which I understand will
happen - but how much will I benefit in cruise?

To quote a funny comedian...."I don't care who you are; now that's funny".
And so true.

I haven't said anything for over two years, but that is funny.
