The 4 Cs are climb, confess, communicate, and comply.
Climb because you can better see and identify landmarks, get better range on your
radio and have a better chance of receiving a VOR station. 3000 agl is a good
altitude, giving you good view of the ground and 69 miles line of sight radio
range.
Confess because you need to admit to yourself that you have a problem then confess
to someone else who can actually help you if climbing didn't help. FSS and
ARTCC are the obvious choices.
Communicate with them, then
Comply with their instructions.

Well, you already got your answer, John. I think I read it in Rod Machado's
private pilot handbook. When I started flying, it was important for me to know
what to do in case of emergency because, contrary to sailing, flying doesn't
give much time to think. The four C's was something I felt was worth
memorizing.
Another one that I think is very important is: "Aviate, Navigate, Communicate,
in that order!"
Obviously, there is no point in checking the map or dialling a frequency if you
are in a spin. Likewise, it is better to head toward a safe place before you
talk about your problem with the friendly ATC operator.
It all makes sense when you take the time to think of it. But when the
proverbial s**t hits the fan, it is not the time to think but to act.
Another think I try to practice is, before take-off, thinking what to do if the
engine stops before turning crosswind. A friend of mine who experienced that -
and managed to do a safe 180 back the runway - has always been very upset by
the precious seconds he lost thinking: "This is not happening to me! This is
not happening to me!"
Cheers,
Michel
"Flying is an old dream that I discovered at the bottom of a drawer where I
store my inaccessible objects. The circumstances had left it ajar."

I need to get my Ross redrive apart to check the planetary gear. I have the whole
unit off the engine and the 16 nuts off the cone where the planetary gear is
located, but I can't get it to come apart.
Do I have to take the four nuts off the back side to get the cone off?
I don't have assembly instructions. I would really appreciate someone's help!
Thanks!

Well, it was about 500 hours ago and I had just rented a brand new Cessna
172SP with about 50 hours on the clock....I can still smell the new leather
interior and enamel engine paint. The panel seemed so wide and more
instruments than one could possibly ever take in. Better than making, well
you know.
It was a hot day at about 100 and the wind was jumping around a bit. I had
to wait after the run up for several aircraft already in sequence to take
off so I opened the side window to get a bit of air. Most of my time had
been in the Fox but I was going for my check ride and the instructor wasn't
willing to go in my little plane. Anyway I finally taxied, made a proud
announcement on Unicom and took the active for a right downwind departure.
Did I mention I left the window open. I know not a big deal. But at the time
it was overwhelming. I had the nose of that plane all over the sky, heart
rate up, and the folks that sit on the bench by the FBO were having a good
time watching the rookie take off. Then it came to me "fly the plane, fly
the plane, fly the plane". So I did. Leveled the nose, got her straight and
calmly shut the window. Had I not read Rods book, maybe I would have pulled
it off then maybe not. Might have been one of those what was he thinking and
why did he stall and crash. I have had quite a few , I call them memorable
flights, not related to my doings, but that's another story. Live and learn
and learn from others and live.

Rick, that is a good "I learned about flying from that" story. Yep, fly the
plane, fly the plane.
A few years ago I was flying a Cardinal RG around the Seattle area, where
there is quite a mix of big and little planes. I was cruising about 3000 AGL
and everything was smooth. I saw a B737 cross in front and above me, but I
was a safe distance away. Pretty. A few seconds later... BANG! I heard and
felt the hardest bump I had ever experienced in a plane. My hands flew off
the controls, I flew up hard in my seat and banged my head on the ceiling.
Then I realized it was about 20 seconds later! I had hit my head so hard it
made me black out. My head was bleeding and blood was streaming down my
face. My hand was bleeding too. I had no idea what my hand got cut on, as it
was on the throttle at the time. When I woke up, I was in a slow descending
bank to the left. I was disoriented and my neck felt like it was broken but
was able to fly back to my home base of Renton/Boeing and land with no
incident. The nose gear would not extend on the first two tries with the
switch, though, maybe stuck from the turbulence.
After that, I realized that those crashes you hear about once in a while
that happen for no reason might just be from this sort of situation. Riding
around with loose seat belt, hit a vortex or other turbulence, and
bang...you are conked out for just long enough to crash. Another one of
those unexplained crashes for the NTSB to report.
So tighten your seatbelt.
