I'm new to the list. I built a model three with a 582. The plane now has approx.
225 hours on it. The question I have is about the throttle connection. I
have the original equipment with a vernier throttle with a screw down connection
to the linkage. The screw pinches the solid wire of the throttle linkage at
the control arm. What innovative solutions have had the best track record?
I have never had a problem, but never had a safe feeling about the connection.
I have limited room in that area. Thanks

Dennis,
You are off on a great adventure. And, as you probably already know, you
are in the right place for expert help. And encouragement when needed. And
criticism when warranted (and sometimes otherwise). All mixed with some of

I had the same comfort feeling on the one bug nut holding the wire. In the
case of the 852, the throttle will fail "shut" if that nut lets go. I
thought about it a long while and ended up adding another bug nut on the wire
as a
back up if the first one loosens.

I've been using 3/8" clear "Polyurethane" (from Spruce) since the beginning.
You can't just use any clear plastic type. On the other hand, SAE R7 or
SAE R9 (fuel injection) auto lines should work well.

Paul,
I would steer clear of automotive "black lines" .
use Urethane clear and second choice Tygon.
The black automotive lines will deteriorate over time and could plug
your gascolator.
Try a guy like that Bob Robertson that posted here for it.
He helped me out with some stuff and found he is very knowledgeable.

There are numerous recommendations to change "all" rubber/plastic/ type
hoses every two years. We've had reports of hardening of Tygon. If you do use
Tygon, be careful that the Tygon is for fuel use. Tygon has about a zillion
types of clear hose and I don't think the average hardware store carries the
fuel (gasoline) type.

DOn, you are correct and that is why i stated that one should go to a
guy like
"Try a guy like that Bob Robertson that posted here for it.
He helped me out with some stuff and found he is very knowledgeable."
Funny you did not paste that part of message ?
I agree on Tygon it second best to Urethane.
And to add on the fuel pump hose to crankcase "the pulse line" Should
be thick wall urethane or braided fule pupm hose that will not
collapse. I have seen many failures from inproper use of pulse lines
ans fuel lines.

Dennis,
Welcome to the list. You have just begun a journey that will have
moments of pure satisfaction and moment of utter frustration. But trust me
the good far outweighs the bad. I am nearing the end of my journey. My model
7 with 912S engine is almost ready for the first engine start and then some
taxi testing. Installed the wings last weekend. Good luck on your build and
remember this is the place to ask when you need a second opinion or help on
something.

I used automotive SAE R9 because it is made to handle all the many auto gas
additives, and it has structural rigidity so it will not collapse if
something leans on it or if it gets kinked. It's too rigid to kink.
Contrary to the previous post, I have never heard of anyone having a problem
with deterioration, but I may stand corrected. As you probably know,
aviation fuel hose DOES deteriorate (swell up internally) rapidly with auto
fuel, so much so, I'm surprised there are not more warnings issued on the
subject.

Dennis, I echo Roger's comments. All of us have probably been through the
"no light at the end of the tunnel syndrome", but later looking back at it
we all probably say the same thing. That part was almost as good as finally
flying it. Have fun Dennis.
And to Roger, good luck with your engine start. That's a big milestone,
especially when all the noises sound like the right ones and nothing
squirts, smokes, or falls off. Let us know how it goes.

Steve, Thanks for your response. I can't imagine auto fuel hose not
working well with auto gas. The SAE folks are actually pretty smart guys.
Maybe a deteriorated fuel hose in a car won't necessarily cause a crash, but
a fire? quite possibly.
I have SAE R7, I believe and have had fuel in the tanks since 1998.

I've very sorry to report that my friend and hangar mate, Tom Johnston, is
selling his very nice speedster. He wants to sell it quickly so he has
priced it well below the fair market value, only $21,900. This is a real
bargain for this plane. So hurry up and buy it, at this price it won't last.
