When flying the Model IV, what conditions would prompt the pilot to
change the horizontal stabilizer position using the front mount hole
selections available? In other words, why would I change to a lower
hole when the manual says the factory prototype flew best using the
upper hole. Is it power, weight, rate of climb, other....?

Has anybody come up with a suitable valve for locking the brakes on a
Model IV, or any other model for that matter? I'm hoping to beat the
high cost (~ $100+) of those listed in the Spruce catalog. Also, is
this a good idea, using the brake pressure to hold the plane while
parked, or are wheel chocks still the best way to go?

Lynn, I fabricated a control lock that holds the stick centered and lightly applies
pressure to the brakes while holding the rudder pedals as well.

What requirements must be met to install and use a Mode C transponder on an
experimental plane? Does an avionics technician need to check it and sign
off on it or can I do it? What other paperwork needs to be done for the
transponder?

From my understanding the same requirements exist for a transponder as if
this was a certified aircraft. I found a wide range of prices to test my
transponder. I think there are various levels depending on what you are
using the aircraft for. I saved quite a bit of money by shopping around and
explaining what type of aircraft I had and how I was using it.

Hi Lynn,
I vote for wheel chocks - simple wood ones with light rope to hold a pair
together.
And 1/8"x1" AL angle stock for tie down stakes (on grass/dirt!), with hole
at top corner for ropes.
These held thru very stiff winds at Lake Chelan airport on one air tour.
Cheers,

Lynn,
$100.00 is not a bad price. I fabricated a couple brake valve myself and the
time I had in them was more than $100.00. My buddy installed one in his kitfox
and seems to like it but I still carry a set chalks.

I don't know for certain about the installation part of it, but it does have
to be checked out by an authorized technician not only at the time of
installation but also every two years thereafter.

Hello,
I flew many hours in a Piper PA22-150 TriPacer with a hydraulic valve
to act as a parking brake.
I don't like the concept and I'll tell you why!
If you ever should happen to use your brakes on landing, and the air is
still
and you park quickly and do use the parking brake, the heat from the brakes
will heat the brake fluid and greatly increase the pressure in the brake
lines.
I did this once at Washington County, PA and when I got back to the aircraft
I no longer had parking brakes but worse I no longer had service brakes
either because the pressure had gotten so high that an aluminum brake
line had
burst!
Chocks or tie down stakes make lots more sense!
Best,
Joe Bienkowski, Bowling Green, OH

I'm new to the list. I built a model three with a 582. The plane now has
approx. 225 hours on it. The question I have is about the throttle
connection. I have the original equipment with a vernier throttle with a
screw down connection to the linkage. The screw pinches the solid wire of
the throttle linkage at the control arm. What innovative solutions have had
the best track record? I have never had a problem, but never had a safe
feeling about the connection. I have limited room in that area. Thanks

You can install it but initially (and every 24 months
thereafter) calibration needs to be checked IAW the
FAR by a licensed tech and a logbook endorsement
added. Costs me $50 every 2 years and it's no big
deal. It's simply verification the encoding
altimeter is providing correct data to the
transponder.

Folks, there is auto fuel line and there is auto fuel line. The last batch
of automotive fuel line I bought for my lawn mower and boat from Napa
cracked and died within six months. Glad I never put it in the boat. The
stuff was either inferior fake garbage sold as fuel line or was really old.
Wasn't brittle when I installed it.
I personally like the idea of Tygothane, but has anyone considered marine
fule line?
It is made to a far higher standard than automotive; it is certified like
aviation except more compatible to aromatic based fuels & probably alcohols.
It is thicker than the automotive stuff I've seen. There are two major
types, rigid & flexible. Considering how the Coast Guard looks at boats very
much like the FAA looks at certified aircraft, it might be worthy of
consideration. The extra cost would be far cheaper than the alternative if
inferior line goes bad, even in the best of circumstances. But I'd avoid
buying from sleepy backwater marina which gets a new roll in only every ten
years.
