Hi Guys, could any Aussie's on the list contact me if they know of any KF1V's that
might be for sale in their area. I'm considering getting rid on the KF1 and
stepping up into something with more range and grunt. Please contact me off
list also if your interested in the KF1.

I would be interested in any guidance from anyone who is operating a Kitfox on
floats. I have bought a set of amphibious floats, (and now need to buy a preowned
Kitfox to go with them, unfortunately no chance of building for a few years,
as my day job is flying a bis jet in Egypt)
I am particularly interested to hear how they perform with the various marks of
Kitfox. i.e experience of anyone operating a Mk 2, 3 or 4. Not so many available
on the secondhand market in the UK so I want to make the right choice.
Also what is needed in the way of airframe mods to fit the floats (A keel stabiliser
extention comes with the floats, and they have come from a Kitfox, but I
don't know which mark).
I am UK based with access to a water runway near my home, but would be probably
landing on grass when away from home.

I am actively looking to buy a Kitfox in the UK, its my intention to fit it with
amphib floats (already purchased), so I am also getting advice from those around
the world who already fly a Kitfox on floats.
My time scale is pretty relaxed as I work overseas much of the time but hopefully
I will be able to purchase an aircraft by the end of the year (or earlier).

Hi folks,
am a newbie to the Kitfox family.I just bought a part finished Kitfox
IV kit that was first shipped from the factory sometime in 1995. After
an initial period of activity, the orginal owner mothballed it for
about another 6 years, then, after another short burst of enthusiam,
virtually abandoned it. The kit is in excellent condition, with about
30% or so completed. Apart from some obvious issues such as the
internal condition of the engine (never been run), I was hoping you
might be able to offer me a few pointers as to what to be aware
of/concerned about, as I try to get it underway again.
There are a couple of cans of paint and glues in the assemblage of
bits, and, although never opened in all that time, I am guessing that
they are probably only fit for the tip???
I am located at Mt Kuring-gai, a northern, outer (very) suburb of
Sydney, so am on the other side of the planet to most of you. If you
know of other Kitfox owners in this region, I would appreciate knowing
their contact details.

Hello List,
When I purchased my Series 5 the 1,550 Lb gross weight wings were not
available. I later upgraded & consequently have a pair of untouched, 1,400
Lb factory quick built wings for sale. No flaperons, wing tips or other
appurtenances - just the wings. I need to get $2,000 + 1/2 shipping for
them, otherwise I will keep them as hangar ornaments. The wings are on the
central coast of California, about half way between SF & LA.
Contact me off list if interested: Tinnemaha@hotmail.com

Subject: | Maintenance Manual for KF5 |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Kerry Skyring" <kerryskyring@hotmail.com>
We are getting close, very close, to our final inspection. In fact it's
scheduled for 30th June and long
days in the hangar are the norm.
We have to present the inspector with a maintenance manual. This is no
problem for the engine which is a Rotax 912 ULS. But for the airframe we are
unapologetically looking for a short-cut.
Has anyone developed a maintenance manual for the KF Series 5 airframe? The
construction manual gives a great check-list for the final inspection but
does not give a guide to maintenance e.g. time
interval for wheel bearingd, cable inspections etc. I know every plane is
different but is there
a document out there that would help us get to where we are going a little
sooner?
Again many thanks to the list for all the help. The plane looks lovely with
its wings on.

Kerry:
I'm no expert on the matter, but considering that packing the wheel bearings
and checking out the airframe, etc., are part of the annual inspection then
the logical thing to do would show in your "maintenance manual" that this is
to be done yearly. I hope this helps. I really can't think that it's too
much off the mark.

Alright - I finally repitched my prop...first, a little background:
KF3 582/3.47:1 C Box/3-Blade GSC
Prop was set for good climb before - I had to haul back on the stick and
climb at 40-45 mph to keep the RPMs below 6500 at WOT. I never went WOT in
level flight because I knew RPMs would break 6800...
I increased pitch by about 1.5 degrees on all three blades (of course!) I
flew her for .2 today because I got real nervous about the RPMs - Static
engine speed was about 6150...that's good. I take-off, still in a very
reasonable distance ~125 feet, climbed well (I never actually looked at the
VSI though), and went WOT...
Holy cow!!! At 5K, I was hitting 75, and at WOT I was an easy 90. This as
opposed to the 70 mph at 5900 before. I was only WOT for a minute, but It
did not seem to want to go past 63-6400...I'm sure after I trimmed,
re-trimmed, and waited, it would go a bit higher...
What does the list think? I know I've been told by many that running a 582
below 5800 was lugging it, but I've been told otherwise by trusted friends
who fly several hundreds of hours per year on their Rotax's...
Also, how about the pitch? Is this too much, that I'm not reaching 6800 in
level flight? She still climbs well, and cruise performance went through the
roof...
Help! I'm lost :)

I think I see one improvement. Climbing at 40-45 is too close to stall
speed. It's a good thing that your new prop settings seem to have fixed
this problem

I assume you mean it was climbing at 6158 RPM (full throttle). That's not
bad. What IAS were you doing with this setup? I would think somewhere
around 55??

When doing full throttle at level cruise attitude, you have to stay on top
of keeping the plane level. Should require some slightly stiff fwd stick.
If you are seeing a good 6400 RPM, you are just about there. You might want
to thin the prop about 1/4 degree. I see that you are already getting some
improved numbers.

5800-6000 is recommended by many Rotax drivers and Rotax engine experts.
Search the web on this subject. No disrespect to your friends but you now
have two different opinions. Search for the best answer and make up your
own mind. If you find that 5800-6000 is the RPM of choice then simply try
to educate your friends. It could be they are wrong. What the heck, if
they turn out to be correct then educate me.

I don't think you are lost at all. You made a change and have seen dramatic
improvement in performance. Just take out a 1/4 degree and fly the plane.
Once you have the magic number you got it. It seems you are very close
right now. Just concentrate on level flight during the full throttle test.
Also take a peek at the EGT's when at full throttle. This will tell you how
close you are on the main jet size.

My friend, who rebuilds dozens of motors a year, says that he has 582's run
900 hrs TBO's (incl cranks) when run below 5500...but he said if I'm trying
to dodge a TStorm or something - it's perfectly fine to run them up over 6K
for extended times...Sounds good to me. I won't be putting that many hours
on my bird, so I'm afraid I won't know the answer for quite a while!

I'm gonna try loading her up tomorrow morning to simulate my trip - see how
well she performs. Around here, the highest we see the DA go is about 2500
feet - I want to climb good even when it's 95 and humid. I don't think i'll
have a problem though. I just can't believe how low the previous owner had
the pitch setting! I guess he was into the REAL short fields...he also flew
with heavy guys a lot though - on the occasion that I'm not solo, I'd
probably have my 110 pound girlfriend with me - so we're well under gross!
Thanks again - I'll let you know what I find

S.L. or real close - but I'll be flying up to the 5-6K range on my way

Indiana on Wed.

Subject: | left hand throttel |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Jim_and_Lucy Chuk" <thesupe@hotmail.com>
Hi all, back again with a few more questions. All of the planes I've flown
so far have a left hand throttel and that is what I am used to. I'm about
to buy a Kitfox and would like to not have too many things to get used to at
one time. Has anyone set up their Fox with duel throttels so either seat
has a throttel on the left?? I've looked at my Kitfox 3 project and see how
one might run a cable to pull at the same place as the typical location,
but I'm not sure yet how I would unlock the throttel that is not being used
so it would not restrict the movement of the other one. Any comments?????
Thanks, Jim
PS Maybe once I start flying the Kitfox and get used to it, I can work on
flying the joystick with my left hand, but right now I would rather use my
right.

Jim
Spend your time taxiing around for a couple of hours. That is time better
spent than adding a throttle cable. Or you can fly from the right seat.

Congrats Andrew , In my opinion I would be happy with 6150 static and go fly
now and enjoy her . Sounds like you have hit on the sweet spot for your
engine . Or you might try going back 1/2 a degree or mabe even 3/4 . Good
luck and happy safe flying .

She still climbs well, and cruise performance went through the
roof...
Help! I'm lost :)
