Kirk, Sorry to hear about your problem, but enough is enough now. Get a
hold of some one that works on these engines daily like a Rotax Engine
Teacher.
I have had the best success with a great guy named Bob Robertson. He
gives you a honest un-biased opinion from the experience of real
problems with real solutions. I have never met him but i have bought
from him and had issues discussed on phone and solved. I call and he
sends parts overnight and have the problem fixed once and for all.
I have never heard or read anything negative about Mr Robertson.

Kerry,
I'm not sure if this is what you need but, you might try looking through
the "Technical Manual" that is published by the Australian Ultralight
Federation - now called Recreational Aviation Australia. This manual has a
section which deals with mandatory and recommended maintenance schedules.
This provides some guidance, in the form of an actual schedule, as to
timing of such procedures as engine overhaul, airframe checks, and so
forth. You may be able to adapt the schedule that they provide, to
producing a maintenance manual for your aircraft. You can download the
manual in html, PDF, and Word formats.
You can find it on the AUF/RAAus website at www.auf.asn.au Look down the
main page till you see the link to the Technical Manual.

Mark,
This is interesting. I do remember your first post. Since then, I rebuilt
my carbs. The new needles were a failure. I experienced exactly what you
are experiencing, but mostly on the left (Pilot) side. Like you, I tried
everything. This mind you after 650 hours with no carburetor issues and the
rebuild was per recommendation, rather than problem directed.
Bing told me there were three needles. the Black one which is what you
have - designed for the 912S. The Silver ones that I had and have now, and
another one, bronze, I think and I am not aware of its purpose specifically.
On inspection, there was nothing visibly wrong with the old needles - per
the inspection guidelines in the repair manual - so the old one went back
on the left carb and I was pretty much OK until I returned from the Idaho
trip last week and had a little rough running as I taxied to the hangar and
found fuel on the floor the next morining - about a tablespoon full. I
guess I will find the time to put the old needle back in the right carb.
As for what to look for, I haven't a clue, but the fact that my probalem
started with the installation of new needles, suggests that the needles
might just play a part in the problem. Maybe as some vendors claim, "there
was a bad batch".

better breathing for the engine or something like that. I decided to stick

The ~6" diameter X 2" thick one is called a "Rotax Special"on the box. The
label on the actual part is "Rotax P/N 825 711". There is also a cryptic
number in the top that is "B059B6". Buy it from Lockwood or LEAF. They will
know and you wont get the wrong item.

Paul,
I don't know I this is of interest to you, but I have the 912S. It came
with an "induction plenum" with valves for primary air and carb heat air.
It also has the advantage of tying both carbs together mechanically so they
aren't as prone to shaking off.
Based on info from the list, I decided not to arrange for carb heat. I took
the valves out and used the two inlets to the plenum to put on two K&N
RU-0800 fliters. I figure that this would allow the engine to breath
easier.
I used a few inches of scat tubing to connect the filters to the plenum.
Seems to be working real well so far.

Sitting on swing here in Manley Hot Springs. T
We skinny dipped in the hot springs this morning. Great, you guys should be
here. We were at Prudhoe Bay yesterday, tomorrow we plan on flying to
Galena and onto Nome. Jim is getting all the pictures together. I am
sittting on swing and the temp is about 60 degrees or so. Days are long,
didn't get here until about 11PM last night. Stayed here to catch up on

I adjusted the float lever to close the spring needle valve at a lower float
bowl level and installed an automotive pressure regulator after the fuel
pump. I run the fuel pump at 2 1/2 lbs.
