I transport my Kitfox on a trailer to get to the local airport. I often wonder
if structural damage is slowly occurring to the wing attach points, as well as
other places, each time the trailer wheel hits a bump or hole (I don't hit those
things on purpose, though). I always check for cracks at the wing attach
points, but I don't know if I'd see a real small one. I use Skystar's wing braces
when transporting the Kitfox, and have noticed that the bolt securing the
brace to the fuselage gets a slight bend in it (I've replaced those bolts 3 times
over 8 an year period). So, there must be quite of force occurring in that
area. Has anyone else had this occur?

Yesterday, we had also a microlight crash, here in Norway. Actually, up north,
where Torgeir lives. A Savannah microlight took off and crashed shortly after,
when a wing came loose, killing both the pilot and his passenger.
Incidentally, the Savannah has flaperons, like the Kitfox. This was our first
microlight fatal accident in the past three years, if I remember correctly.
How can a wing come loose? The same happened a few years ago, at my airfield,
with a Jora microlight. Does anyone know of a Kitfox that has lost a wing?
Should we check the bolts fastening our shrouds?
Cheers,
Michel

You must have a lot of force on that brace. I use
homemade braces and regular quarter inch bolts down
on the fuse attach points. Have never bent a bolt or
seen that kinda force and I've towed some long
distances.
When towing, keep an eye on the vertical stab. Make
sure there's no side to side movement or loose
fabric. Skystar had seen some cracked vert stab LEs
due to the vibration and stress from the wing
holdback braces.
The weak points on the Kitfox are the 4 AN ball
joints on the lift struts. That's where the wing
fails under load, particularly negative load. They
bend and break. If you look at them, the front and
rear spar carry-thrus are built in such a way that
you'd have to pull the welded bushings out through
the drilled ends of the carry-thru tubes. Very
strong.
Personally speaking, I watch the lift struts and
those bottom lift strut attach bolts and fittings.
Folding a wing up or down is much more serious to me
in the 'Fox than folding the wing back...
Regards,
Ted

Been years since I videoed a mailbox blowing up!!! ;-) (Just kidding...)
I fly from my backyard and because of that I am VERY careful of what my
neighbors think. The biggest thing that my neighbors (or your neighbors
for that matter) hate about airplanes is the NOISE! If they don't hear
you they probably will ignore you. That is one of the beautiful things
about the 912 series motors...they are QUIET. I entered downwind to my
backyard strip once with my wife and 2 year old son playing in the yard
below. Motor was at idle and I couldn't have been more than 300' agl.
Made my turns, lined up on final and plopped down...when I throttled up
to taxi over to the hangar my son was startled and went running to mama!
They had not heard me come over, nor noticed me out of the corner of
their eye! Flying the river with the door open waving at the boaters
below, has never got me anything but excited waves back, and NO I DON'T
"BUZZ" the occasional boats on the water...when I see a boat up ahead
(fairly rare actually...section of river is between 2 dams and not
really accessible to general public...) I climb up and give room. The
"Buzz" job was at a PRIVATE local airfield where I had a hangar and the
folks there were pulling out planes for the same trip...hardly John Doe
public.
Side note...the day the video was shot, we landed at the destination for
food which has a restaurant on the field with a big party room,
including a big screen TV. Couple of guys came over to look at the
camera set-up and introduced themselves as ____ and ____ . One was a
FSDO inspector type that was there for lunch as well...he enjoyed
watching the video on the big screen with the other 10-12 pilots... ;-)
Jeremy
P.S. I better tell my flying buddies down in the Florida panhandle to
watch out on their annual beach runs. We fly 50-100' off the water
probably 100 yards off the beach from Panama City, Fl. east to Panacea
and back. Your arm will actually ache from waving at folks...banner
pilots don't wave cause they are too busy trying to keep the plane
flying ;-) Panacea happens to be home to a great seafood place (eat at
lunch, it was swimming the day before...). Gross weight has been known
to be exceeded after a lunch of boiled shrimp, crab claws, and a couple
dozen raw oysters...pilot discretion recommended...
P.P.S.
Blowing up mailboxes??? A video of a pilot dropping eggs on car windows
would probably compare, buuuutttt ;-/
Anyone ever seen the video of kids blowing up mailboxes in Texas? I bet
their friends thought it was really cool too until the police got a
copy.
These days we really need to be more careful what kind of image we
portray
to the public. I know some of you are thinking stick in the mud right
now
but seriously. I too agree the video is awesome and I would have loved
to
ride along but with all the negative perceptions around about "GA"
should we
really be posting this for the general public to see? I personally love
it
when a friend makes a low pass on me while I'm out in the yard - I live
in a
rural area similar to that in the video - but not everyone feels this
way
and I have experienced this first hand since the 150 "terrorized"

Rick,
I'm very interested in the horizontal stabilizer struts you have. Sent you
an e-mail off forum but I'm afraid it may have been spam blocked or
something? So if you could reply to my av8rps@tznet.com e-mail I would
appreciate it, or call me at 715-457-2087 home, or 715-581-4381 cell. Also
mildly interested in the other parts you have.

Guys (& Gals) -
No I don't think Jeremy was doing anything illegal and I am not
incinuating he was. I am trying to look out for all of us - maybe I am just
shell shocked from a recent phone call I got regarding flying activities.
Once apon a time (fairly recently maybe) I went out for a ride in my
150. (Which by the way is certified for spins.) I was solo, sitting right
seat as I am working on my CFI and want to get familiar with the sight
picture. I went west out over the edge of the Chesapeake Bay about 2 miles
from the nearest residence (VERY RURAL AREA HERE) and where the beach
provides a good emergency out, climbed to about 6500 feet (seemed to take
forever as hot as it's been) and began slow flight practice. When she'd
stall I would do the "falling leaf." and at about 5000 climb again for a few
minutes. After about a hour of all kinds of slow flight and stalls
(turning, approach, departure, and falling leaves) I decieded to end my day
with a spin. I started at 6000 ish and recovered well before 3500,
continued my decent and leveled off at about 2500. Then for more practice
I did a simulated "engine out" into the 1800' grass strip where I sometimes
keep the plane and call it a day. I put her over the approach end, entered
a steep spiral to the left and rolled out on a perfect down wind. Turned
base, then final, touched down in the first 100'. Sometimes it all works
out.
So here I was, all "pumped" that I had performed all these maneuvers
just about flawlessly when my cell phone rings. (Less than 10 minutes out
of the plane.) It was a friend at the local airport checking on me, he knew
I was up because I saw him when I was there for fuel. Said he was concerned
because a woman had called saying that there was a small high wing plane
"flying crazy like he didn't know what he was doing or might be drunk" by
her house and the plane kept "bobbing" in the sky. Then that plane "flipped
over on it's side and fell until it was close to the ground." Apparently
she wanted to know if she should call the police. I guess she didn't
because I haven't heard anything else and I work with the Sherrifs office
alot in my profession so someone would have mentioned it to me. After he
told me where she was calling from I figure it might have been me she was
watching as I could see the area she lives in from where I was practicing -
by her house was a bit of an exaggeration - I did pass over that area on my
way back to the field but was still at 2500+ S&L and was a long way away
when doing my maneuvers. The area where the lady lives is about 4 miles
west of the strip so I doubt she saw the steep spiral.
Point is I would hate to have the FAA call on me because someone who
doesn't understand what's going on panics and exaggerates - I never broke
any rules either. I was practiceing BASIC flight maneuvers - things most of
us learned for PPL. I don't drink, got that out of my system long ago. I
never did any aerobatics that required a parachute. My aircraft is
certified for the maneuvers I was doing. Always maintained an altitude
where in the event of an engine failure I could safely glide to a suitable
landing area. And was out over the water when I did my maneuvers so as not
to endanger anyone.
Guess I'll go to the practice area 60+ miles away from now on... In a
150 that could take all day to go up and back if the wind shifts. WHAT A
BUMMER!

Sorry to be bombarding you guys with questions but this is the best place to
get info on kitfoxes (obviously). This question has to do with landing
lights. I know blueskyaviation.com makes a set for the tips of the speed
wing but I have the droop tips and have yet to find lights made for this. I
have looked into the XeVision landing light and they would be great but they
are $$$! Has anyone tried halogen fog lights for cars? I know they aren't
spotlights but they do put out a fairly good amount of light, at least
enough to aide in taxi and landing. What do you guys think, or what have
you used?

I think I have a small problem, that may be turning into a larger one rather
quickly. I have followed the manual for installing the ring mount onto the
engine and right now it appears the mount does not fit over the heavy duty
starter that is on the 921S. I have filed down the tabs on the back of the
starter, but it looks like the raised dome may have to be filed off. Does
anyone know how much metal can be removed from this 'dome'? Also, the ring
provides an extremely tight fit, so much so that after 2 hours, I still can't
get
it lined up. Is this normal? Any advice would be appreciated.

How many turbo folks are using this method? What kind of numbers are you

varied so much. I am just beginning to do some tracking. I was actually able

Kitfox-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Kitfox-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Kitfox-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Kitfox-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Kitfox-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.
