Paul,
While talking to the people at Lockwood 3 months ago
regarding the Evans coolant, I was told they only use
it in 912/912S applications that see water temps over
230 degrees.

Ted,
I know waterless coolant works better to cool things, but is there any
reason one can't use conventional coolant? I can see myself in Canada or
Alaska one day needing coolant and finding no waterless coolant anywhere,
while conventional coolant is everywhere. Plus, I heard these 912's tend to
run cold. So do we really need Evans?
My engine has run previously with coolant in it, but it has been drained out
for almost 2 years. I suppose it would still need to be flushed if I end up
using Evan's.

Lowell,
What coolant have you been using? Does your 912 run hot? How much coolant
does your engine take when you change it? Do you have to "vent" the cooling
system like you did the oil when changing it?
And thanks for the info on the oil. But I'm confused with oil change
procedures? I hope this doesn't sound stupid, but do you drain the oil tank
as well as the crankcase every time you change oil? The fitting on my tank
is a real bear to get at. But it looks like if I don't I will have a good
share of the oil in the tank yet. If so I'm thinking about installing one
of those easy open valves that are available. But I'm not sure there is
room up there for it? How do you do yours? Has anyone tried an extended
line with a valve at the end like they use in the marine industry. Sure
would make life easier if that tank has to be drained every change.
Anyone using the full synthetic oils? I had a bad experience with synthetic
in a car once years ago, and have been leary of it ever since. But if it
truly is better for the engine today, I would use it. I would imagine I
could extend my oil change intervals (here in wisconsin you fly all you can
while the weather holds out :-) Times a wastin' when you have to change
your oil...

Actually, with Evans the coolant temp runs a little
higher.
Evans is recommended due to the hotspots that can
develop in the 912 heads when water is used in the
coolant. No water so the boiling temp is way
higher. That's why it's used in performance / racing
applications.
I've always run 100% antifreeze as here in Houston
hotspots are an issue. I changed to Evans as 100%
antifreeze can gel over time but Evans won't. There
was a good article in one of the mags (Sport aviation
or Experimenter) and Evans was recommended in the
article.
Just my choice...

Ted

To get the oil out of the oil tank, I take the top off of the tank, take
everything out and clean it, then use one of those vacuum pumps to remove
all of the oil. That way I get all of the sludge out of the bottom of the
tank.

Paul,
I'm sure you'll get varying comments. Usually it's a good idea to follow
the Engine manufactures recommendation. OK I've said it.... I follow the
previous recommendation.. 50/50 mix. Use a extended life Antifreeze that is
Silicate Free and I use distilled water.
As for oil... Myself and several others have had great success with Honda
Pro GN4. You can get it from the local Honda shop, it has the gear additive
for the gear box.. Designed for high rpm engines.
I run 100LL on the 912S and add the TCP that I sell religiously. I also
change the oil every 25-30 hours. The results say you could probably go
longer but I have always felt that the oil is the life blood of the engine
and therefore I change it regularly. Because of the lead in the fuel I do
pull the tank and clean it as well... "get the lead out"

All,
I'm getting ready to run my 912ul on my model IV, so I went and read all of
that (very confusing) stuff on the www.rotax-owners.com site for the latest
and greatest on coolants and oils, plus I searched the kitfox list for info.
But I haven't found anything real current. And seeing how this stuff seems
to be continually changing, I thought I had better ask all of you before
putting the wrong stuff in my engine.
So, my questions are;
- Has there been any updated information on coolant requirements?
- Is Evans Waterless coolant still the way to go?
- How much coolant will I need to buy for my 912ul Model IV (no heater core)
- Is it ok to use standard coolant in the 912 yet? (I tend to go places
that are pretty far off the beaten path. At times regular coolant can be
hard enough to find, much less Waterless EVANs NPG)
- What is the best oil to run?
- And last but not least, I heard I have to bleed the oil and coolant
systems of trapped air prior to starting the engine. Is this true? And how
does one do it if it is?
Suggestions? Ideas? Advice?

Hello guys,
I know this must have been discussed a zillion times before but ... I have
those big tundra tyres and they are getting worn off from landing on asphalt. I
thought their size was unusual but no, even in little Norway, they have them in
store. But they are not shaved round like mine.
My question is: Why do they have to be shaved? Can they have a pattern in it?
Can they have a flat surface or does it have to be round?
Thanks in advance,
Michel

I won't exactly answer your question, but will make a
related comment. I use McCreary, 6 ply, aviation
grade tires on my 8 inches wheels. These tires are
heavier, and more expensive, but with the Kitfox gross
weight and landing speed, should last "forever".

Hi Michel,
This is the one I'll love to answer, want to know?
Go here;

This is unshaved, because it's a Kitfox :) ..
On this low speed little beauty you can do that, no problem with high
speed flying particles - no need for the sleek ones here!
No doubt, my Kitfox is a he. : )
Cheers

Paul,
I too am getting ready to fire up my engine in the next few days. I
agree with John on the Honda oil. I called Lockwood and asked them about
using the Honda oil and there comment was 'If it's good enough for Honda
engines its good enough for Rotax'. The oil is a full synthetic with gear
additives. As for coolant I'm using Dexcool and distilled water 50/50.

Paul,
I'm sure you'll get varying comments. Usually it's a good idea to
follow
the Engine manufactures recommendation.

So, my questions are;
- Has there been any updated information on coolant requirements?
- Is Evans Waterless coolant still the way to go?
- How much coolant will I need to buy for my 912ul Model IV (no heater core)
- Is it ok to use standard coolant in the 912 yet? (I tend to go places
that are pretty far off the beaten path. At times regular coolant can be
hard enough to find, much less Waterless EVANs NPG)
- What is the best oil to run?
- And last but not least, I heard I have to bleed the oil and coolant
systems of trapped air prior to starting the engine. Is this true? And how
does one do it if it is?
Suggestions? Ideas? Advice?

Sure, this is the trick everyone(?) use to get the exhaust away.
With this extension most of the fume "of two stroke" is gone.

I need some input from list member who have installed brake fluid. What
method did you use to install and bleed your brake lines? I tried to do that
today but wound up with a lot of air in the lines. The brakes I have are
Cleveland and I found in the ACS catalog a little fitting called a Brake
Line Bleeder that attaches to a fitting on the bottom of the caliper. It is
an expensive little item for almost $55.00. I'm looking for a less expensive
alternative for installing the brake fluid. Comments please.

Roger,
I have matco brakes on my fox. I use an oil can with a tube connected from
the can to the bottom of the caliper. open the line at the master cylinder
and catch it as it comes out the top. The air has to rise with the fluid. I
also took a 10-32 cap screw put a hole thru it and attached a tube to the
top of the master cylinder for easy fluid recycle.

Roger,
Here is what has worked for me, I have an old electric fuel pump from a Jeep
Grand Cherokee that I use to power bleed my brakes. I fill a jar with brake
fluid and drop the fuel pump in. I hook the fuel pump to the bleeder on the
bottom of the brake caliper and then replace the plug in the top of the
brake fluid reservoir canister with a hose barb with a hose that runs back
to the jar. I have a momentary push button set up on the fuel pump so I can
bump it, running it wide open creates to much pressure and pops the hose off
the brake caliper. I work the brake pedals as I am bleeding, it goes quick
and works great.

Gary,
Thanks for the info. I tried that method and it will not work for
these Cleveland brakes because they have a check valve fitting on them and
they will not allow a simple rubber tube to run the fluid in. It needs a
special fitting that I will probable have to purchase in order to do this
right.

Read the oil recommendations on Rotax SB SI-18-1997 . It recommends this
oil if unleaded fuel is used exclusively and your runnning temps are in the
250 range. It doesn't discourage the oil if temps are below that, but it
does recommend other oils if occasional 100LL is used.

I suspect that Rotax will have a hard time recommending another engine
manufacturers oil, so my "guess" is that the Honda oil would otherwise be on
the list. That said, the reason I am using the oil from the accepted list
is that an I used to use and previously listedt was delisted because of the
the EPA mandated formula change on that brand of oil (Motul 5100). I began
using an oil formulated and sold by California Power Systems (a Rotax
distributor). Eric said they were planning on testing that oil for the
foaming problem - nothing yet. I have discontinued using that oil.
Keep in mind that the reason for the new dipstick was at least in part to
compensate for the foaming issue. Rotax has published a number of bulletins
regarding the problems of air in the oil system and this is an area where
caution is appropriate as it seems to me that the vibration issues with our
engines - spinning a prop - is a bit different than a motorcycle, spinning
a chain. I'm usually a bit skeptical of manufacturers claims if it has to
do with recommending their own products etc. but Eric spent a bit of time on
this issue last year at OSH and it got me a little concerned.

Grant that is one thing I haven't tried. I did some testing using RC model
servos and even with tons of gear reduction, you can see the motor pulses if
you pan the camera. I suspect you will see the same thing with the mirror
activator. I am going to eventually mount a high res digital still camera
and that is one possibility, though. One more possible problem with the
mirror unit is that the speeds are constant with a directional off and on
switch and a proportional pan would be impossible.
I was thinking that I didn't use a proportional pan that often, but I do.
Especially when flying with another airplane and trying to keep it in the
field of view or tracking something on the ground.
I have tried just about everything once and sometimes more than once. If
anyone is interested in my failures, drop a note and I can at least let you
know what didn't work for me.
One late trick. I bought a new highrer resolution camera and surprise -
when it came it didn't have an external microphone jack. How do I get air
to air and ATC sound into the final video. Since there is very little
syncronized sounds and editing is not a problem, I got an IPOD photo with
enough capacity to record every sound for about 5 and a half days. I turn
it on just before take off and shut it down after the flight segment. I had
fouund that most of the good chat was during the more boring stretches when
the camera was off. I misssed too much of the good stuff. Now I get
everything.
I listened to some of the audio from our last Idaho trip and as I listened
to one approach, I could feel the adrenaline rush as I relived the event.
Maybe this has to do with why music has such an emotional effect. I found
the sound with no video much more moving than the video without the sound.
