--> Kitfox-List message posted by: AMuller589@aol.com In houston we've been flying 2 hrs daily with noon temps of 94F lately and 102 a couple of weeks ago. With only small eyelids in the door panels it's ok in flight and doors open on ground, but putting it away and gassing up in steel hangars is dehydrating and that's leaving the doors open while we're out.

Serialize complete at 07/28/2005 11:14:36 AM, Serialize by Router on Prod02/DLI at 07/28/2005 11:14:36 AM --> Kitfox-List message posted by: kitfoxjunky <kitfoxjunky@decisionlabs.com> Until recently, I have not flown my plane on wheels, always on anphib floats. That was really the mission profile I had in mind when I purchased it, and it served that very well. I have it on wheels now as I do an overhaul of the floats. My plan was to get it back on the floats asap. The problem is, I have having too much fun learning how to be a tailwheel pilot., and the performance is nothing short of spectacular. I have the IVO dialed to give me about 5200 rpm on takeoff. I know I am not getting the full 100 hp out of the 912S, and it still is off the ground before I can get the throttle all the way in. I am getting in an out of very short strips and cruising at 115 mph. This thing is an absolute blast to fly. I have a stupid grin on my face half the time now. My wife thinks I am having an affair. I guess in a way...I am. Not sure this post belongs on a technical forum, but anyone reading the list and thinking of buying a KF may appreciate the comment. The degausser I rented from Sacramento Sky Ranch came in, and since I had it for only a week I decided I'd better get to it. Well, it ended up taking only a few hours, most of that time spent pulling the panel so I wouldn't fry it. (I already had the engine out to do firewall work.) The actual degauss probably only took 15 minutes. I went from having my compass locked to a heading about 100 degrees off, to having it move a maximum of 10 degrees as I moved it around it's mounting area. It's nice to have something work well for a change. (Yes, I've been having some fun lately.) I'll keep the degausser for the full week, just in case things tend to revert to their previous state, but with the frame demagnetized I'm cut loose to put the engine back in, get it fully hooked up and maybe run it. Who knows, maybe by this time next year I'll be flying! Woohoo! Guy Buchanan K-IV 1200 / 582 / 99% done, thanks to Bob Ducar.

When I decided to buy a Kitfox, many told me that is was not a plane for a beginner, taildraggers were difficult to fly, even dangerous. Yes but ... how about the fun? Landing my gal is so cool that I often do touch and go's ... just for fun, each time looking for perfection. Once I landed so smooth that I had to look aside to make sure I was on the ground and not still floating. Cheers, Michel do not archive

Serialize complete at 07/28/2005 03:31:58 PM --> Kitfox-List message posted by: kitfoxjunky <kitfoxjunky@decisionlabs.com> I really followed the debate that was on this list a few month back...about three point vs wheel landings. I had very little time in taildraggers, less than an hour total dual time on CUBS and C-170's. From other pilots at our field I heard comments about how dangerous the KF could because it was so light. One fellow suggested I remove the screw from the tailwheel that allowed it to breakout, and put it back in once safely back to the hanger. I did a few hours in a Champ and another 582 powered KF before doing my first landing in my KF. I did a glassy water type approach, and it did a perfect wheel landing. I had never done one of those before...ever. I have found three pointers a bit more of a challenge..more adjusting to the slow speed and high nose up attitude due to the tundra tires, but a great way to get into a short strip. This little airplane keeps entertaining me. So far it has provided me with a float rating, tailwheel training, retractable gear and variable pitch prop experience. In a few months I hope to add experience with skis. If I was 20 year younger, and looking for a commercial ticket, this would have been a hell of vehicle to build time on. --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "jdmcbean" <jdmcbean@cableone.net> Harry, You may want to take a look at operating procedures... I have been operating the in-flight IVO for several hundred hours without interruption. We also have a large group that is operating them. I have not had any issues with the grease getting hard... However, the motor brushes can sometimes carbon up.. this is easily fixed. How many planes do you have operating them and how are they being used ?? Sounds like your in a training environment... I know of 5 of us that are flying in excess of 300 hours a year (which is a hell of a lot of flying) using IVO without those issues. Fly Safe !! --> Kitfox-List message posted by: AMuller589@aol.com I have found it easier and simpler to wheel land with full flaps than three point on a KF V. It has a Subaru 135hp engine. We are operating it with a forward cg and have difficulty getting full stick travel with our big bellies. Have been considering another 5lb of lead in the tail or straightening out the stick for more back travel. Every one who has flown it finds it real touchy in three point attitudes.

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Lowell Fitt" <lcfitt@sbcglobal.net> Hi, Jimmy, I have never seen one mounted there, but it seems to be a reasonable location as, in my experience, the coolers are quite efficient and some flow restriction for the cooling air is the norm. My thought is, if it fits give it a try and see if it works. The only downside I can think of is the length of the oil line hoses. --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Lowell Fitt" <lcfitt@sbcglobal.net> I made mine by fabricating a mold of wood, waxed it well and used some PVA mold release and layed a couple of layers of light weight glass cloth in epoxy. Popped them off the mold (three pieces per side) and glued them in place, finishing the ends and joints with Micro. If you decide to go this route. Tweak the jury struts to fit closely before finisheng. I did on one side and forgot to on the other side and when stretching the jury strut to fit, it cracked the fairing at the bottim of the "N". For an enclosed trailer its just a mater of balance. I would think engine forward would be best. --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Joel Mapes" <foxfloatflyer@hotmail.com> Years ago over the San Juan Islands of Washington State I was operating 2 meters and heard a familiar call, W7GEN, so I replied. Dennis lived in Bremerton at the time so I thought nothing of it until he told me he was mobile eastbound from Portland Oregon on Highway 84, a distance of at least 160 miles from my position. On another occasion I served as a simplex repeater during a SET exercise, doing 360's at 4000' over the middle of the county. It would have been a lot easier if I had someone else to handle the radio traffic while I was flying! Joel N7CGZ (gear in storage) Model 5 912 GTA CS prop Aerocomp amphibs
