Brad
You didn't ask for advice, but I'll just mention this because this item has
come up regularly over the years.
Several of us on the list had what we thought was leaking wing drain valves
and it turned out to be a leaking sight glass connection which was dribbling
it's way internally over the wing fabric to the drain fitting. Very
difficult to spot, but the give-away is the smell of fuel inside the
aircraft at the wing root. When everything is tight, you should not smell
any fuel whatsoever.
You may also want to try replacing the drain fitting with a NPT plug from
your local hardware store (1/8" I think). If it still leaks, you know you
likely have a leaking sight glass fitting.
Also, the drain fitting sometimes gets fouled with debris, also easy to fix
once removed.

Anyone have the correct size of the quick drain fuel fittings that are
installed on the bottom of the wing tanks? I am guessing that the size is
3/8--24
but not sure. It would be nice to have the fittings ordered and here when I
change the leaking ones out!
Thanks,

Nice meeting you up in Oshkosh, Ray. I got back Friday afternoon,
driving through Chicago to Michigan. I got a lot of good ideas from the
'foxes in attendance, and from their pilots, including John King, Bruce
Lina, and others.

My route was kinda simple, Bowie Maryland to Mansfield Ohio 1st stop, 2nd stop
was at De Kalb Illinois, Only two stops on the way to Oshkosh! from De Kalb I
flew straight into Oshkosh but was put in a holding pattern for about 1 hour
over rush lake. I will be going again next year, that 2005 Oshkosh sticker looks
great on the side of my Kitfox.

Check out page 66 of the August AOPA magazine. "Wind-tunnel tests using
scale models of humpback pectoral flippers have shown that the bumpy
flipper is more efficient design and has better stall characteristics than
anything currently in aviation. The results were previously reported by
researchers from West Chester University, Duke University, and the U.S.
Naval Academy in the journal Physics of Fluids."
"The bumpy flipper produced 8 percent more lift and 32 percent less drag,
and stalled at a 40 percent steeper angle." It seems the flow is better
attached to the upper surface of the flipper. The 40% steeper angle is not
a misprint on my part.
Now all we need to do is skin a whale and attach the skin to the upper
surfaces of our wings, etc. Besides wings, they say it should work on
airplane propellers and ship rudders. It sounds to me like what they have
done to golf ball designs.

Jim I have not read the article yet, but that is very interesting. We all
know about the golf ball effect and how it breaks up the boundary layer, but
did you know that "bumpy tape" is sold specifically for this? A lot of
gliders use this tape on their leading edges to gain lift and reduce drag.
Hmmmm, maybe it can be used on my land speed race motorcycle...

I didn't, Don, because I am not a golfer. But, in the yachting world, we know the
so-called "orange skin" effect on a hull performance. That's why I never bother
to strip the old anti-fouling paint. It simply adds up from year to year,
cracks up, makes an uneven surface that ... looks a bit like an orange skin and
... I sail faster! :-)
Cheers,
Michel

Kitfox-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Kitfox-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Kitfox-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Kitfox-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Kitfox-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.
