I agree with Guy, "adds" is the best aviation weather site out there. Be
sure to download this new Flight Path tool developed by the adds folks
      http://weather.aero/jade/
Once downloaded to your computer you can apply your own settings and save
them for your most common area of flight. Be sure to try the slider on the
right side of the screen that lets you see winds barbs in 1000' altitude
increments and the bottom slider lets you change the time of day for the
      winds forecast.
On bottom left you can choose what items to overlay on the map, like Metars,
      Tafs, Temp, humidity, Airmets etc.
There's a tutorial on the above link also.
      Enjoy.

      All,

      I have an NSI radiator ( 6 x 4 x 22 ) and its too big. I don't have a
      thermostat
and I have to block off about 1/3 of it during the summer and 2/3 during
      the
winter to get my water temps above 150 degrees F.

I'd like to go with a smaller radiator to reduce the drag as well. I've
      figured that
at 80 kts its using about 5 HP in drag hanging out in the bottom
      slipstream.
      ( 1 sq ft. @ 80 kts @ est. Dcoef 1.2 ).

I've got two 1.125" hose ports. Any sources or ideas ?

      Mike,

When I was running an EA 81 I was able to put a Ford Escort t-stat into
one of the hoses and put a hose clamp on each side to keep it in place.
This had been used by someone else on this list and it worked for me.
      Just a thought. fwiw. Norm

Hi List, I have been off list for quite a while as I was in the process of getting
a home ready for sale and selling it.

We now live in Seguin, TX at an air park (0TX6) a 2,200 foot grass strip. You
are welcome to fly in and visit if you are in the area but please call me (830-372-0444)
so that I can give you the official approval as the owners here require
it. I can also help you get auto fuel if needed at a Shell station about
      4 miles away.

I am building a new home at the airpark so I don't have much time to build toys.
I bought a flying RV-9 as a fix for this great habit.
(sorry guys but I wanted a real fast cross country airplane) however I am still
interested in building another Kitfox in about a year or so.

Glad to be back with a great bunch of people.

      Hi, Vic,

Welcome to airpark living. It does have one drawback - the thought of
moving away will bring night sweats. I recently retired and that
      possibility looms.

I am curious what you have planned. I just returned from Stan and Cara's
place at the Thunder Ridge Airpark and their hangar is at least five times
bigger than mine and is covered in stucco to resemble the Southwest Adobe
style. It is a real eye catching and beautiful home.

Cliff's request was a timely reminder to check once again the Bios in the
Sportflight site. Most of them are dated to be sure and some of them bring
pangs of remorse as some good friends are no longer with us, but it still
feels good to put some flesh on the names we see so often on the list. I
      enjoyed the read.

Maybe it is time for some updates. Many who were building are now with
significant hours on their airplanes and still others are onto other
      projects.

      Just curious.

      Hello all,

Many thanks to all who responded in reference to a panel mount system for a
portable gps. I went with the Ram mount Ball & arm system for my Garmin 196 &

it works great. A new problem.........As many of you know, the oil in a
rotax 912 drains out of the normal area when the engine is not running & must be

"primed" before startup by turming the prop. Sorry for the terminology here,
but I'm not that mechanical. How do you get an accurate dipstick reading
during preflight? In the past I have turned the prop by hand, but I never know
      if
it is up all the way. Last time I cranked it with the mags off to try to
make the job simpler, but it didn't seem to come up enough. (I was told that
      30
revolutions should be sufficient to get a good reading.) After about 10 revs
hand cranking & at least 30 with the starter it was only up to the bottom of
the "range". I figured it needed some so I added about 3/4 quart & took off.

(The high-low range on the dipstick represents 1.1 quarts correct?) I was
worried that I might have overfilled it so I kept a close eye on the oil
pressure & temps. Pressure was on the high side but well within limits. In the

initial climb, oil began dripping steadily from under the panel. I turned around,

landed & checked the dipstick level. It was way over. I cleaned up the
floor as well as the belly(which was covered), took out some oil & everything was

fine. No serious harm except the mess.

What is the best was to get an accurate reading so this doesn't happen again?
Is the high speed cranking using the starter less effective than hand turning
      the prop?
Would I be better checking the oil level at shutdown & adding then if
      necessary?
Is the hot engine reading accurate?
How much oil is normal to add per flight hour?

Any insights would ge greatly appreciated.

Looking for some input from some smart people. I worked on and did test
flights an Avid Magnum. it has a Scott 3200 tail wheel which something isn't
quit right. The springs connecting to the rudder are maul type big & small
tension springs. Is this incorrect type of springs for this setup.
I see tension type springs out there but not the maul type on scott tail
wheels? I have a maul tail wheel on my model IV which I am ok with, but this
set up with grove gear is twitchee. When you land the rudder input is way
too sencitive to any inpts. Any thoughts.

I check the oil level immeadiately after shutdown. I have not had to add any

With my CAP prop where I have the latitude to crank in any RPM, in cruise I
generally end up pretty well where you are running at now...between 3800 and
4000 rpm. I'd leave it at 16 deg.

I'm running a normally aspirated NSI Subaru EA81 engine on my Model IV 1200
Kitfox. I have a 3-blade, ground-adjustable Warp Drive prop with the pitch
set at 16 degrees. My maximum engine rpm at level flight is 4700. I've
just upped the pitch from 15 degrees, and find that I am getting about the
same indicated air speed at 3800 rpm that I had been getting at 4100 rpm.
Needless to say, I like the faster speed with less wear on the engine, but I
realize that if I increase the pitch enough, at some point I'm going to be
lugging the engine and increasing the risk of pre-ignition, etc. (The
increase in pitch does not seem to have affected my take-off or climb. My
vertical speed indicator shows 8 to 9 hundred feet per minute at 70 mph
indicated.) Can someone tell me at what point I have to worry about
overloading the engine? Thanks in advance.
